Thales SIX, provides world leading tactical radio and electronic countermeasure (ECM) solutions to Customers around the globe. We are looking for a Bid and Project Manager to join our expanding team. This is an exciting opportunity to work across the whole spectrum of Bid and Project management. You will provide over-arching bid and project management leadership, specifically the project management of Land projects (from contract award to final delivery) as well as supporting bid activities to generate organic growth.

You will be responsible for complex, high value projects, delivering to Internal and external customers, both UK and international. The role will requires you to ensure effective liaison happens across a range of stakeholders, that best practice is being applied and that project management capability strengths and weaknesses are identified and managed. You will also be providing coaching and direct support to less experienced project managers.

You will also get excellent support and continuous development from an extensive team of specialists and experts in the Land Communication business, as well as the Bid & Project Management function.

Key Responsibilities and Tasks:

Undertake the activities that will ensure the successful delivery of complex projects.  This will typically include (but is not limited to) the following:

• Deliver key results and performance metrics within projects, including order intake, sales, gross margin and cash

• Creation of the initial Project Plan during the bid or “Demand” phase of the lifecycle through requirement capture, work definition, estimating and scheduling that will include all Milestones, activities, resources and any other feature that will require to be delivered.

• Supporting bid management activities to achieve organic growth; Shaping solutions, estimates and offers, managing the bid process and generating proposals.

• Project Governance (the Gate and Stage Processes) over the bid and project delivery activities to ensure project, technical, procurement and support processes are applied and are effective in controlling risks

• Ensure all business planning and reporting is published in accordance with Business directives e.g. Project Management reviews (PMR), Business Operations Report (BOR) and On Time Delivery (OTD)

• Drive Quality, Cost & Delivery performance through close working with other functions

• Manage all project stakeholders; ensuring strong communications are established and maintained

• Ensure that members of the project team are actively managing Risk and Opportunities, and have a robust Project Management Plan

• Ensure data integrity of all project information including financials and schedule. Use the Oracle and Primavera toolset to hold all financial, schedule and resource information

• Ensure “Lessons Learned Management” is applied to all projects, entailing application of lessons from other projects, and capturing lessons learned on specific projects under your control.

• The role will also involve occasional ad-hoc duties that are not listed above but are necessary to respond to the needs of the business. These ad-hoc duties will be consistent with the nature of a management position within Thales

Skills and Experience:

• You will have experience of successfully managing high value projects in a complex, multidisciplinary, multi-site organisation and ensuring rigour to change control, commercial awareness and stakeholder management at a senior level.

• Desirable to have IPMA Level C professional accreditation or equivalent Association for Project Management (APM) qualification

• The ability to successfully manage project teams (including the coaching of project managers)

• The ability to adapt personal style of management and communication to achieve the desired results from interactions with team members and stakeholders.

• Full business lifecycle management, including capture, qualification, developing capture plans, and winning strategies.

• Comprehensive understanding of generic processes and techniques used to schedule project activities (for example; WBS, OBS, milestones, dependencies, EVM).

• Comprehensive experience and understanding of the Project Management process (including Change Control, Risk Management and Information Management).

About the role

The engineer would be responsible for the design, development and verification of video-processing firmware for FPGAs in close collaboration with the Systems, Electronics and Software teams.

Key responsibilities

• Undertake design of complex FPGA modules or architectures, from concept through to system integration & qualification

• Lead discussions with a multi-disciplinary team (systems, mechanical, software, safety, etc) to develop an optimum solution

• Design firmware using VHDL or High Level Synthesis Languages

• Verify firmware using VHDL or Hardware Verification Languages

• Writing and reviewing design documentation

• Lead peer reviews and contribute to project design reviews

• Work collaboratively with the project team to ensure products meet all requirements

Projects involve using the latest industry-class development tools for FPGA and System-on-Chip hardware technologies. Work is carried out to a structured firmware design process.

Skills and Experience:

Demonstrated experience of firmware design roles including the following:

• Degree in Electronics or Software engineering

• Development of firmware/digital design in VHDL or Verilog

• Verification of firmware designs using VHDL or SystemVerilog

• Analysis of firmware requirements and architecting a design to meet those requirements

• Familiarity with design flow and third-party synthesis tools, such as those from Xilinx / Intel (Altera) / Microsemi (Actel)

• Knowledge of FPGA architectures and design tools, such as Xilinx (Vivado/ISE), Altera (Quartus), Microsemi (Libero), Lattice (Diamond)

• Practical experience debugging firmware designs and supporting integration and test at hardware level

• Experience in writing technical reports/ documentation

Experience Required:

• Have broad and deep knowledge of submarine sonar systems, including outboard array technologies, signal processing chains, data processing chains, and operator interactions

• Have the ability to critically appraise sonar system specification (Solution / Hardware / Software / Firmware), assessment, design, and qualification artefacts to judge their suitability and completeness within the context of the overall engineering process

• Have the ability to understand and apply rigorous systems engineering processes to the development of a complex system at an Enterprise and solution level.

• Sound understanding of safety and cybersecurity requirements to assure appropriate coverage in the design.

• Experience of working in an environment where on time and on budget delivery is critical to success.

Key Responsibilities and Tasks:

• Critically appraise and assess the maturity of the Sonar system and subsystems design with respect to the lifecycle stage, and influence the delivery team’s approach to ensure appropriate outcomes

• Ensure coherence of the sonar systems at a combat system level, including 3rd party suppliers.

• Work in close co-operation with the customer community to provide assurance of the progression of Sonar development activities

• Work in close co-operation with the customer community, and partners to influence the strategic direction of the UK’s Submarine Sonar Spiral Development Programme

• Ensure coherence between the various UK submarine programmes from an integrated sonar perspective.

• Perform and organise studies on behalf of the customer pertaining to sonar performance analysis, providing reports on status.

• Manage the technical baseline of the Contract by chairing and minuting the “Engineering Control Board” of the Joint Project Office.

• Identify and mitigate technical risk associated with the overall fitness-for-purpose of the Sonar design

• Understand and work effectively within the commercial and technical constraints of the programme

• Provide technical leadership within Thales Underwater Systems and provide mentoring, coaching, peer review, and knowledge transfer to developing engineers

About the Team

Thales Underwater Systems (UWS) who design, develop and support Sonar Systems applications for anti-submarine warfare and mine hunting, have a fantastic opportunity for a Project Design Authority (PDA) to join a small, dedicated and ever-expanding team.

Our Opportunity

Project Design Authority within the Future Capability sector focusing on research and development.

The Project Design Authority will be responsible for Solution Compliance for a Bid or Project. The PDA acts as the primary technical leader of the bid or project team. They also act as lead technical interface with the Customer.

Where required, the PDA may also act as the Principle Systems Engineer and Solution Architect on the bid/project.

Some responsibilities include

• Analyses Customer needs/requirements and assesses Solution architecture and technical choices.

• Ensures Solution compliance with Customer needs, Product Policy, MTB Strategy & applicable legislation, rules & regulations.

• Reviews the technical risks and opportunities and the related mitigation plans throughout the bid or project.

• Ensures best trade-off between Customer requirements & Product Policy consistent with schedule, costs, MTB strategy & risks/ opportunities.

• Checks the production and the maintenance/service aspects of the Solution with the Production Process/Technology Manager (PPTM) and the Service Engineering Manager (where applicable)

• Approves the Design & Justification File (D&JF) prepared by the Solution Architect (ARC).

• Approves the completion of integration, verification, validation and qualification results.

• Leads the main bid/project Engineering Reviews and approves the main Engineering deliverables at each project decision milestone.

• Leads the systems engineering activities (as required)

• Organises when appropriate technical meetings and peer reviews together with the Engineering Delivery Manager (EDM) and other technical stakeholders and experts, in order to perform the Solution technical assessment and validation.

• Interfacing with the client (internal/external), to define the solution.

About You

You will have…

• Technical prowess in one or more of the technological disciplines relevant to the company, e.g. Sonar Systems, Processing, Outboard Hardware etc, and/or in one or more of understanding of business case generation, resource planning, and budgetary control.

• Experience in the developmental lifecycle disciplines, e.g. Requirements Capture, Modelling & Analysis, System Design, Product Development, and IV&V, ideally in a research context

• Experienced and knowledgeable of whole systems engineering lifecycles for complex systems.

The Role

Primary Purpose of the Role:

Thales Belfast designs, develops and manufactures low cost, high volume missile systems. About the role

What will you deliver?

Working within the Energy portfolio team supporting the computer based data processing and control systems, with a focus on the North West based power generation facilities.

The role will require close working with specialist sub-contractors to ensure compliance with Thales’s business management system for quality assurance.

The role will require close working with the customer at the technical level and will be varied, ranging from maintenance type activities, fault finding to module level and to component level and will entail working off-site at customer locations.

This role will report directly to the team lead and include interaction with the customer and suppliers.

Who are we looking for?

Knowledge and understanding of analogue/digital electronics

• Knowledge and understanding of serial and network communications
• Electronic equipment fault investigation, diagnosis and rectification, including use of schematics.
• Generation of hardware test documentation including test plans, procedures and reports.
• Supervision and execution of tests in accordance with test plans and procedures
• Ability to work independently and remotely at customer sites
• Design of cable harnesses and test boxes to support fault investigations and system testing
• PC skills including the use of Microsoft Word, Excel and Visio.
• Ability to communicate effectively with the client
• Current Full UK Driving Licence

Desirable

• Previous experience of working in a Rail, Aviation, Metro, Power Generation or other regulated industrial environment.
• Previous experience of working on BBL UCS 3600 based systems
• Practical soldering skills to support manufacture of cable harnesses and test boxes
• Prior experience with rack mounted equipment and cubicle builds.
• Experience of implementing the BS7671 IEE Wiring Regulations

About the role

Thales Intelligence Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) design and deliver hardware into Electronic Warfare Solutions for the UK MoD  & export customers and have an exciting opportunity for a Hardware Engineering Manager to join the team in Crawley. You will be responsible for ensuring the delivery of engineering designs and developments to agreed cost, schedule, performance and quality.

Your focus will be on ensuring that all the disciplines understand their part and that they work together as a team to achieve timely delivery of development milestones. You will oversee a range of activities regarding customer requirements, architectural design, and development and production life cycle of the hardware solution.

You will work in a highly technical, high performing, world class team who are leaders in this their business area. You will play a key part in new state of the art products and developments in the field of fully digital Electronic Warfare solutions. The role will provide you with opportunities to gain exposure and develop your skills across Thales.

This role require UK SC level security clearance and is based in Crawley with some flexibility to work from home and occasion UK wide travel to other Thales and customer sites.

Day to day you will

• Manage packages of hardware design work.

• Interpretation and decomposition of system requirements & algorithms.

• Manage hardware design and development activities accross electrical, electronic, mechanical and RF disciplines to deliver the overall hardware solution

• Work with other engineering and support disciplin leads to achieve delivery of the overall programme

• Hardware Integration & Verification.

• Manage test, measurement, debug and verification of the overall hardware solution

• Technical Management of Subcontractors.

• Design Assurance (Complex Electronics).

• Provide Technical assistance to production.

About You

You will have a background in Hardware Engineering and a solid understanding of Engineering Development Lifecycles. The successful applicant will have proven experience leading engineering activity through design & development lifecycles in the defence industry domain. Experience in system integration, platform installation and acceptance in a military environment would also be beneficial.

You will have demonstrable experience of collaborating, leading and pulling together teams, excellent listening skills, logical thinker, driven with a proactive, can do, mentality.

An immediate vacancy for a Process and General Mechanical Assembly Technician. An excellent opportunity to be part of a growing and evolving team.

Current working 37.5 hours across 4 days (Mon – Thurs), plus overtime. The role is initially an 18 month fixed-term contract, with a view to going permanent.

Our Opportunity

As Process and General Mechanical Assembly Technician, you will mechanically assemble and electrically test products in a team environment, to process and quality requirements to meet the company milestones and targets.

Day to day duties include;

• Responsible for assembling products as per the production schedule with focus on quality, cost and schedule.
• The operator will carry out a range of tasks e.g. – Mechanical Assembly, Electrical testing, basic soldering, product packaging, paint preparation, stores and material handling.
• Participation in continuous improvement projects.
• Liaising with Manufacturing Engineering, Quality Engineering & management to develop team working and ensure that safety, cost, quality and schedule are met.
• Ensures that all tools, work instructions and equipment are maintained and at the correct standard.
• Responsible for the cleanliness of assemblies, work stations and general working area.
• The jobholder will participate with their manager in the e-HR together policy and ensure that individual career and personal development plans are in place.
• Ensure all work undertaken is in accord with the departmental control procedures and ensure that in all aspects of work these procedures are followed.
• Will be expected to work for periods of time without supervision and required to maintain records of production builds.
• Assisting with work in other areas of the site when required to by management to achieve production schedules.

Please note current working hours are due to change and any successful applicants must be open to future shift patterns.

About You

The successful Process and General Mechanical Assembly Technician will ideally have previous experience of mechanical assembly in a manufacturing environment. Reliable team player, capable of working on own initiative within a team environment. Through this you would have gained all or some of;

• Experience of basic electrical testing
• Have good manual dexterity in order to work with complex assemblies
• Be able to use small hand tools and measuring equipment, e.g. feeler gauges, clock gauges and torque tools
• Follow manufacturing instruction sheets
• Read basic engineering drawings
• Knowledge and experience of Lean manufacturing/Business improvement Techniques
