Director
The Director brings content concepts and ideas to life with artistic vision. He/She develops an idea into engaging content by defining the style and structure of the production. During the pre-production phase, he/she guides script development and makes key decisions on cast, crew and locations. He/She directs the content shoot with both cast and crew. He/She also manages the technical aspects of production such as the camera, lighting, design and special effects departments. He/She guides the post-production crew to achieve the final cut of the production.
He/She may also be required to manage single and multiple camera production operations, by communicating production requirements to Production teams to achieve the required film shots. He/She plans and drives a creative vision to deliver content, requiring a high amount of concentration, collaboration and creative thinking.
He/She should have a good understanding of the entire content production process, and be good at storytelling to create compelling stories for various forms of visual media. He/She should have an artistic vision to be able to create linear and non-linear forms of content.
He/She should have effective leadership, collaboration, communication and stakeholder management.
Writer
The writer devises the long-term storyline and outlines the overall story in sequence. He/She is to develop scripts for various audiences and ensures that the ideas appeal to them. He/She must ensure that overall quality, budget and schedule are in line with requirements. He/She seeks direction from the Creative Leadership team to execute the vision of desired content, and works with various production teams to ensure that the story is translated to a visual concept appropriately. He/She understands technical and production constraints, and may identify solutions for required story adaptations. He/She should also understand the production processes, and have expert knowledge on regulatory requirements to identify legal issues that may occur.
He/She works either independently or in a team, and depending on the production requirements, he/she may be required to travel for work.
He/She should have a deep understanding of the target audience to create stories that engage them. He/She is effective at storytelling and has an expert grasp of the language.
Tasks
Director
• Assess the requirements of the production in terms of cast, crew, location, studio, equipment, logistics and marketing costs.
• Communicate the requirements of each film shot including the visual setting, type of shots for correct emphasis and creative atmosphere.
• Compose the visual details of each film shot as per the storyboard by finalising camera angles, lighting, positioning and movement of actors.
• Create the content concept which may include the genre, theme period setting, broad storyline and basic plot.
• Direct the creation of the trailer for the content.
• Finalise agreements and contracting with the production houses.
• Finalise edited content for production release.
• Guide main cast actors during script readings to help them understand the characters' traits and behaviours.
• Guide revisions to the screenplay based on the creative and commercial inputs from stakeholders.
• Guide talent during the takes on scene requirements and emotions required to achieve the vision of the scene.
• Guide the creation of storyboards by communicating the creative vision for each scene.
• Guide the development of the script based on the content concept and storyline.
• Maximise the production cost estimate by making changes to the screenplay.
• Oversee the hiring of the entire crew and support staff as per the production requirements.
• Pitch ideas, scripts or screenplays to potential stakeholders.
• Provide creative inputs for scene cuts and edits.
• Provide creative inputs to guide the creation of the final sound mix.
• Recommend the best suited personnel for key positions.
• Review auditions for major roles to evaluate and identify suitable actors.
• Review unedited content as part of the editorial viewing.
Writer
• Approve the required budgets based on the copyright clearances required.
• Brainstorm ideas to shortlist options for managing copyright or legal issues.
• Develop the storyline with the Creative Leadership team based on the creative vision.
• Discuss the narrative and visual requirements with the creative leadership teams.
• Drive the development of the story based on agreed concepts and research.
• Evaluate concepts or ideas for suitability and potential audience appeal.
• Guide the team on legal clearances required.
• Guide the writers for development of immersive story elements.
• Guide writers to ensure quality writing of the script specifications conforms to requirements.
• Highlight possible legal and copyright issues that may hinder production.
• Lead secondary and primary research efforts to obtain factual information and authentic details.
• Manage budgets and plans for script production based on funding.
• Review final written materials to meet audiences and commissioners' preferences.
• Review research to understand the target audience in terms of concept, running time and format.
• Review scripts to ensure it aligns with commissioners' and publishers' requirements.
