As a BIOLOGIST- Safety/Facilities/Fleet Manager within the PACIFIC ISLAND ECOSYSTEM RESEARCH CENTER, some of your specific duties will include:

• Apply biological knowledge to support station and field operations across PIERC projects; coordinate with staff to assist with planning, organizing, and implementing complex scientific investigations, including the use of facilities and vehicles.
• Prepare and provide scientific review of scientific reports, journal articles, presentations, and data releases.
• Track and manage project data and field and station operations information using a variety of general software (e.g. Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Word, SharePoint, etc.) including compiling data, preparing summary tables and figures, and preparing reports for funding agencies and cooperators.
• Conduct limited lab and fieldwork and assisting principal investigators to ensure data and safety procedures are followed and updated as needed.
• Support all required field safety training and certification for PIERC staff.

The Lead Health Technician (Ophthalmology) carries additional responsibilities that involve the oversight of specific services within the ophthalmology clinic. The Lead Health Technician (Ophthalmology) may assist with technician oversight duties including: making work assignments, monitoring work flow, providing input on performance, resolving daily workplace issues, and maintaining efficient flow of patient care. They may provide training to eye care staff, students and/or trainees; and may provide input into special advancements, promotions, and disciplinary actions. Duties may include, but are not limited to:

• Respond to the needs of the staff ophthalmologists, the supervisory technician or other designated administrative supervisor who will maintain daily supervision and guidance.
• Plan and carry out examinations in line with training and accepted practices, and independently makes recommendations about clinical situations, procedures or changes to procedures in some situations.
• Use methods to recognize conditions that cause erroneous results or creates dangerous situations, and may independently troubleshoot clinic problems and complex instruments.

Major duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to:

Supply Distribution

• Maintains stock at primary and secondary inventory locations for all clinical and administrative services. This involves pulling stock inventory and material from main inventory for delivery; replenishing stock inventory; interacting with clinical and administrative customers to ensure issues and needs are identified and either resolved or escalated to supervisors or Inventory Management Specialists as needed; maintaining records on stock levels; recommending revisions in stock levels as needed to supply changes to Inventory Management Specialists; communicating to the lead or supervisor any concerns related to supplies, equipment and procedures, providing information as needed orally or in writing regarding customer or external stakeholder issues, general telephone inquiries and visitor referrals; communicating with customers and vendors to obtain information regarding medical supplies.
• Monitors expiration dates, rotates stock to limit outdates and removes items from use as required by outdates.
• Performs daily inventory of primary and secondary inventory points using bar coding equipment on a predetermined schedule that will allow for timely replenishment orders.
• Resolves differences between records and physical count of stock.

• Percent Receives supplies and material into the HCC.
• Unpacks/uncrates supplies from shipping cartons; properly stores supplies and material in main/primary inventory areas.
• Stores items in accordance with established guidelines, utilizing a computerized inventory system, to ensure sterility and integrity of the supplies and material and the data integrity of the inventory management system. Through periodic inventory and discussion with ward and clinical personnel, maintains stock levels, returns reusable supplies to the distribution area, and informs clinic and ward personnel on new or changed items and supplies, current medical supply resources, and shelf life.

The Equipment & Facilities Services Assistant coordinates work priorities and takes policy direction from the Section Supervisors. Duties include but may not be limited to:

• Utilizes a comprehensive computerized maintenance management system (CMMS) such as MAXIMO, to provide system control, oversight, repair history, analysis and quality of the data entered, and documentation of historical, current, and future maintenance operations for the ongoing maintenance program.
• Ensures proper work order hierarchy exists to track planned and expended labor trade level and overall job level.
• Responds to inquiries regarding work order status, equipment maintenance history, trouble reports, and other preventive maintenance questions.
• Compiles, prepares and generates various reports (man hour reports, maintenance backlog reports, equipment downtime reports etc.), records, statistics, listings, charts and graphs, or other related information.
• Trains others in the proper use of CMMS, generating work orders, generating Preventive Maintenance (PM) work orders.
• Records and maintains information on safety certifications and inspections.

Major duties include, but are not limited to the following:

• Decontamination, preparation and assembly, inspection, sterilization, High-level Disinfection of endoscopes, transducers, probes, supply items, critical and semi-critical reusable medical devices (RMD), package and labeling peel pouch items, and distribution support to include RMD pickup and delivery for the medical center. The term "supply item" as used in this functional statement refers to disposable and reusable items for patient care including instrumentation (scissors, forceps, retractors, etc.), any semi-critical and critical reusable medical devices, surgical trays and sets, and various other items that could be processed through the Decontamination and Preparation areas of SPS.
• Familiar with guidelines consisting of Manufacturer Instructions for Use (MFI/IFU), which list and illustrate various steps in the reprocessing of instruments and equipment.
• Operates equipment involved in all areas of SPS reprocessing and sterilization processes.
• MSTs receive guidance from more experienced staff members, trainers, educators, and leads and require frequent and direct supervision.
• The incumbent will have knowledge of the processes for RMD as required by this position. The incumbent will be required to maintain current knowledge of the Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), which document the processes and procedures for cleaning, disinfection, preparation and assembly, inspection, and sterilization of RMD appropriate to this position. The incumbent will be able to demonstrate their ability to utilize a competency/SOP in the use of RMD appropriate to this position.

• Receive and review prescriptions for the full range of pharmaceuticals to include controlled drugs on the formulary.
• Determine type of substance, strength, dosage, and quantity to be dispensed in accordance with accepted practice and pharmacy standard operating procedures.

Prepares sterile ophthalmic preparations and other complex sterile pharmaceuticals such as total parenteral nutrition and cardioplegia solutions.

Correctly interprets orders, selects, and measures appropriate ingredients, mixes ingredients in an aseptic and effective manner, inspects the final product for accuracy, suitability, and elegance, labels the product, maintains records of the manufacturing process, and supplies the product for delivery.

Understands specific handling considerations for storage, distribution, and disposal of medications.

Operates and maintains complicated pharmacy equipment including but not limited to Omnicell TM /Pyxis TM, laminar flow hoods, total parental nutrition (TPN) compounder, repeater pumps, etc.)

Ensures that the IV cleanrooms are cleaned daily, and appropriate logs are completed for daily, weekly, and monthly cleaning.

Stocking and maintaining the Pharmacy Service preparation area(s), reviewing anticipated inventory needs and notifying the procurement technician in a timely manner of products required.

Participates in glove fingertip and media fill testing, maintain competences passing didactic practical skill assessment initially and annually thereafter.

Assists in airborne particulate and microbial testing and surface testing to ensure cleaning schedules are met.

Responsibility for keeping abreast of changes in the Pharmacy Service (i.e., interdepartmental memoranda, relevant station memoranda, and policies and procedures.
