The physician will be responsible for the medical management of a panel of sleep patients assigned to them. The AO reviews principal investigators' proposals for research funding and/or special requests prior to their submission to the VA Office of R&D (ORD) or other agencies. The position provides expert guidance to prospective, new, and established investigators on all matters related to research initiation, implementation, management, and regulatory review requirements. Exercises intermediate skill in influencing and communicating with unusually difficult patients under limited to moderate supervision.
• Maintains precise adherence to basic principles of asepsis, safety, and universal precautions to provide a safe environment for patients, families, and employees. Incumbent possess knowledge of proper handling of instruments including cleaning and sterilization.
• Participates in training in the setup, use, reprocessing, and maintenance of their clinic/department specific materials/equipment leading to the initial competency and validation of ongoing competency at least annually.
• Provides supportive care to patients relatives.
• Collaborates with interdisciplinary team to support the development, implementation, and evaluation of the patient's plan of care.
• Utilizes the computer to access patient data to verify appointments, review progress notes and short medication profiles. Orders labs and/or looks up test results under specific clinic profile. Documents progress notes on CPRS.
• Initiating, performing, and completing assigned duties in providing care to variable patient populations.
• Carrying out assigned patient care based on the patents' conditions; to use judgment in selecting the appropriate order and sequence of procedures and treatments; and to accurately recognize, report and record relevant patient information.
• Completing work and submitting for general review by a registered nurse or physician for appropriateness and conformity with established policies/procedures.
• Observing and responding to the patient's needs for care, including medication and equipment-assisted care (patient/family education). In organizing and delivering care, the LPN recognized and considers several factors that impact the patient's care plan.
• Preparing and administering prescribed medications (oral, topical, subcutaneous, and/or intramuscular) and performs minor, non-surgical, treatments according to established policies/procedures.
• Observing physical and/or emotional changes in patient's condition from prescribed medication/treatments, promptly and accurately documents notable changes, and reports any deviations from normal to RN or MD/DO.
• Recognizing urgent and emergent patient care situation and seeking assistance of the RN and/or MD/DO, and initiates appropriate emergency interventions as directed.
