Our Skills and Employability business provides support to citizens, from supporting the unemployed into sustainable work, to upskilling those with low or no vocational skills, so they can progress in work.
The Restart Scheme helps people who have been unemployed and in receipt of Universal Credit or Jobseekers’ Allowance (IB) for at least 6 months to get back into work. We comprehensively assess Participants’ needs and motivations using our evidence-based employability model and work with our network of trusted providers and partners to help break down barriers to work, enabling them to progress towards a more secure future.
One of these needs is support in developing Self Employment aspirations, assisting participants to develop, incept or grow their business idea into a gainful and sustainable endeavour by offering professional advice and coaching.
The Self Employment Coach will work across one or more of our offices (dependant on demand)
Serco aim to offer to support to participants in the following areas:
- Business Viability
- Business Planning
- Market Research
- Finance and Budgeting
- Cashflow
- Marketing including Web Design and Social Media
- Sales and Growth
- HMRC Registration
- Taxation
Advice for participants will be on a 1:1 basis as well as through group workshops and awareness sessions.
Participant progress will be monitored by feedback forms that need to be uploaded onto the customer system – Aptem
The Self Employment Coach will work with a caseload of participants, working with them on the forementioned areas to become gainfully self employed as quickly as possible.
Key accountabilities
- Conduct in-depth initial diagnostic assessments with participants to evaluate business viability and suitability for further support. Being confident in relaying messaging where this is not the case.
- Coach and offer Self Employment Guidance to Serco’s Restart Scheme Participants on a 1:1 Basis, setting challenging smart actions and evidencing progress made. Signposting when appropriate (e.g. funding, arranging insurances)
- Deliver Group Sessions on key Self Employment areas as well as Awareness sessions for those who are unsure if this is the right journey for them.
- Build rapport with both the participants and the Restart Job Coach to ensure a healthy and collaborative relationship is maintained.
- Equip participants with tools, resources and contacts needed to progress/develop their business.
- Effectively manage time, caseload and management information.
- Work Closely with Jobcentre Plus colleagues to secure Gainful Self Employment status and evidence of earnings.
- Work to challenging Trading Start and outcome targets as set in KPI’s. Gathering Evidence of throughout the journey.
- Maintain relationship with participant post Trading start to ensure the business stays on track.
What I need to do the role?
- Strong Knowledge of key business functions (marketing, finance, sales, operations etc)
- Experience in supporting Business Setup
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
- Ability to work independently.
