About Us:

Carl Zeiss Microscopy, LLC supports 18 summer courses from May through August in 2024 at the Marine Biological Laboratory (MBL) in Woods Hole, MA consisting of students and faculty attending from 30+ countries around the world.

The Zeiss Training Group Summer Interns at MBL are an integral part of our summer support structure. Once interns are oriented, their primary role is to support student and faculty image acquisition activities throughout the summer. This includes basic set up of widefield microscopes, an understanding of Kohler illumination, brightfield, phase contrast, DIC and fluorescence contrasting methods, troubleshooting basic hardware and software issues, as well as conveying an understanding of what constitutes a good scientific image and how to prepare for and carry out image analysis. 

Here's What You'll Do:

This will be an opportunity to learn, operate and support more advanced systems as well, including laser scanning confocal microscopy, Airyscan and potentially other super-resolution techniques. MBL Interns must have good analytic and time management skills, and be detail oriented and conscientious. Additionally, be able to work closely with people from a diverse range of cultural and scientific backgrounds. Inventory and QC along with tracking of equipment is critical. An outgoing disposition is an advantage, with a willingness to proactively engage with faculty and students. Working in overlapping shifts will be essential, so enjoying a strong team environment but also being able to work independently, are both essential for a successful internship.

Do you qualify?

• Student currently enrolled in a Bachelor’s, Master’s or Ph.D. degree in biology, physics, optics, biochemistry or related field.

• Skilled in microscopy, optics, and imaging with a focus or interest in biology.

• Proficiency in computing hardware and software including Microsoft Office Suite (MS Word, MS Excel, PowerPoint).

• Ability to work independently for periods of time.

The Sr. Specialist, Internal Communications & Channels will be a member of the Corporate Communication team. Responsibilities will include helping manage the company’s internal communications and channel strategy which will include a need for mastering the intranet’s CMS (Content Management System), helping drive content governance and compliance, and managing a global group of content intranet editors. The role will also include supporting corporate enterprise initiatives, including but not limited to corporate award program planning and administration, and event planning support. Associate engagement is a key priority for the company, which is underscored by having the right tools, channels and communications for reaching and engaging associates.

This role is hybrid (3 days on site in Franklin Lakes, NJ, and 2 days remote).

Primary responsibilities

• Day-to-day operation and management of the company intranet, including coordinating site managers and editors, providing training and CMS access, maintaining email distribution lists and Viva Engage community membership, initiating content audits, and monitoring for compliance to guidelines.

• Manage the homepage to maintain a proper balance of content and tools, and well thought-through global navigation.

• Monitor site analytics and lead projects for process and content improvements.

About the role:

The primary focus of the Software Engineer Intern is to create software applications in .Net(C#), Node.js, PHP, React, or React Native (mobile).  The ideal candidate has some knowledge or experience coding in a deadline driven and multi-project environment. Responsibilities:

• Document, install, configure, automate, monitor and operationalize various cloud tasks along side team guidance.

• Perform operational engineering for activities which include platform upgrades/deployments, patching, monitoring, configuration, recoverability and system troubleshooting.

• Work closely with a team of architects, engineers, and developers to create functional design specifications, cloud reference architectures, and assist with other project deliverables as needed.

Qualifications:

• Working on a course study in Computer Sciences and aligning interests to the following areas of Cloud Operations Engineering:

  • AWS Lambda supporting serverless applications on AWS.  Azure Kubernetes Services/AKS also desired.

  • Docker/Containers

  • Technical support including systems design and implementation with a strong focus on Azure and AWS platforms.

• General knowledge with Python/PowerShell, and other automation tools supporting platforms for AWS and Azure.

• General knowledge of virtualization, cloud computing, GH Copilot.

• Experience administering/supporting Windows and/or Linux systems running in public cloud

• Knowledge of AWS and Microsoft Azure virtual network appliances

• Knowledge of backup and disaster recovery processes

What’s the role?

As the Field Service Engineer Intern you get to work with an astonishing team that plays a vital role in Carl Zeiss Research Microscopy Solutions. Showcase your skills and interest in electronics and mechanics. Experience with electronics, a mind for problem solving, or technical repair/troubleshooting are all sought-after attributes.

Success in this role requires dedication to learning and the rapid absorption of training material as a high percentage of your time will be spent in technical training courses and learning basic application principles to provide technical service. When not in classroom training, the FSE Intern will be engaged in on-the-job-training (OJT), working closely with, and assisting higher level FSEs in a customer environment. This is a customer-facing role and therefore strong interpersonal skills and an ability to communicate effectively are required to be successful. This role requires extensive travel with occasional overnights.

• Successful completion of technical training to acquire a rudimentary knowledge of Zeiss microscopy equipment. 

• Demonstrate, in the field, that the technical concepts learned in the classroom trainings and OJT can be applied to a high standard.

• Properly care for all ZEISS tools and assets as may be made available during the execution of assigned responsibilities.
