The Centre for Maritime Law (CML) at the Faculty of Law, National University of Singapore, was launched on 3 September 2015 and focuses broadly on international trade, transport and shipping law–related issues. It undertakes research and hosts events of scholarly value to academics, professionals, and government institutions. Its objective is to enhance the development of commercial maritime law in Singapore, the region, and further afield. CML’s continuing achievements include a highly–regarded Working Paper Series (WPS), available at https://law.nus.edu.sg/cml/publications/, and the CML CMI Database, Judicial Decisions on International Conventions, available at https://cmlcmidatabase.org/.
The Director of CML is Professor Stephen Girvin, MPA Professor of Maritime Law.
CML is inviting applications from legal professionals and academic faculty in the field of maritime law to conduct research and to participate in the work of the Centre for a temporary period of one to two months, with possible extension of up to six months.
The suitable applicant should have a PhD degree in maritime law or maritime law related areas and a minimum of three years post-doctoral experience to be appointed to the position of Visiting Senior Research Fellow in CML.
The successful applicant will join CML’s existing full–time and Adjunct research staff (see https://law.nus.edu.sg/cml/personnel/).

Duties
The successful applicant will be expected to:
- Conduct their own research.
- Complete ONE Working Paper for CML’s Working Paper Series - to be submitted within one month from the end of the appointment and ONE refereed journal article with acknowledgements of the affiliation with CML.
- Attend CML’s events and bi-monthly lunch seminars, as well as present a briefing on some recent issues of maritime law at one of these seminars.
- In consultation with the Director of CML, offer one CLE (Continuing Legal Education) or CPD (Continuing Professional Development) seminar to practising professionals in Singapore.
Requirements
The selection committee will consider the following criteria in making an appointment for the position of Visiting Senior Research Fellow in CML:
- The candidate will be of exceptional calibre.
- The principal selection criterion will be the applicant’s potential for excellence in research and a demonstrated ability and passion in assisting in the ongoing development of CML. The applicant should, therefore, submit a proposed research plan for consideration. The selection committee will consider the alignment of the proposed research with CML’s research strengths and priorities.
- The applicant should be exceptionally organised and have an eye for detail. A strong command of the English language is absolutely essential.

A one-page description of the intended research project should also be submitted in the application.
