Job Summary: The Transport Operations Manager will oversee daily transport operations, including route planning, fleet management, and performance tracking. This role involves leading the transport team, ensuring safety and regulatory compliance, and implementing strategies to improve efficiency and reduce costs. The ideal candidate is a highly organized, proactive leader with a deep understanding of logistics, transportation management, and team development.
Key Responsibilities:
Fleet and Route Management:
Oversee the scheduling, dispatch, and routing of the transportation fleet to optimize delivery times and reduce fuel costs.
Monitor fleet utilization and recommend adjustments to maximize efficiency.
Analyze routes and delivery patterns to identify opportunities for improvement.
Team Leadership & Development:
Lead and manage the transport team, including drivers and support staff, promoting a positive work environment and high performance.
Set performance expectations, conduct regular reviews, and provide training to improve skills and ensure adherence to safety and operational standards.
Recruit and onboard new team members as needed to support operational needs.
Safety & Compliance:
Ensure compliance with all transportation regulations, including vehicle maintenance, safety inspections, and driver hours.
Develop and implement safety protocols to reduce accidents and ensure driver well-being.
Conduct regular safety audits, provide training on best practices, and address any non-compliance issues.
Budgeting & Cost Management:
Manage the transportation budget, focusing on cost control and efficient use of resources.
Track and report on transportation expenses, including fuel, maintenance, and labor costs.
Identify and implement cost-saving initiatives without compromising service quality.
Performance Monitoring & Reporting:
Establish KPIs for transport operations, including delivery times, on-time performance, and fuel efficiency.
Monitor and analyze performance metrics, preparing regular reports for senior management.
Use data to identify areas for improvement and implement changes to drive better results.
Customer Service & Collaboration:
Collaborate with the customer service and logistics teams to address any delivery issues and ensure customer satisfaction.
Act as a point of contact for escalated customer inquiries regarding transportation and delivery.
Work closely with other departments to coordinate delivery schedules and resolve any logistical challenges.
Required Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in Logistics, Supply Chain Management, Business Administration, or a related field. Advanced certifications in logistics or transport management are a plus.
5+ years of experience in transportation operations, logistics, or a similar role, with proven experience managing a team.
Strong understanding of fleet management, route optimization, and safety regulations.
Proficiency in transportation management software (e.g., TMS, GPS tracking) and Microsoft Office Suite.
Excellent leadership, problem-solving, and communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications:
Knowledge of lean management, Six Sigma, or other process improvement methodologies.
Experience with budgeting, cost control, and financial reporting in a transportation setting.
Familiarity with fleet maintenance and scheduling software.
Understanding of health and safety regulations specific to transportation.
