We seek a suitable candidate to fulfil the role of Science Technician. The Science department at SMCC has a purpose-built preparation room serving six laboratories. The technician would be required to support the delivery of Science, Biology, Chemistry and Physics to GCSE level.
The role involves taking responsibility for the practical resourcing for KS3 and GCSE classes under the direction of the teaching staff. In-class support of students during experiments would be part of this role. The ability to be proactive in the preparation of planned experiments and reactive to situations that may arise such as spillages or broken equipment is vital. A willingness to be trained as a First Aider is also important.
The successful candidate will be enthusiastic with good communication skills. A knowledge of and passion for science would be highly desirable. Previous experience and/or a willingness to undergo training is essential. Good IT skills including in the use of spreadsheets, word processing, databases and others software would be advantageous. The Faculty wishes to recruit a Postdoctoral Research Associate to support the work of Dr. Charles Downing and his theoretical research group in quantum optics, nanophotonics and condensed matter. This Royal Society funded post is available for around 8 months with a start date from November 2024 (at the earliest) to January 2025 (at the very latest). The end date cannot be later than the end of August 2025 due to the funding ending at that point.

The successful applicant will conduct high quality research in theoretical quantum optics and related areas. They will work on current issues interesting the research group, including quantum batteries, non-Hermitian quantum physics and quantum topology.

About you
The successful applicant will be able to present information on research progress and outcomes, communicate complex information, orally, in writing and electronically and prepare proposals and applications to external bodies.

Applicants will possess a relevant PhD (or nearing completion) or possess an equivalent qualification/experience in a related field of study and be able to demonstrate sufficient knowledge in the discipline and of research methods and techniques to work within established research programmes. The Faculty wishes to recruit two Postdoctoral Research Associates to support the work of Dr Craig Beall and Dr Tom Piers. These externally funded posts are available from 1st October 2024 on a fixed-term basis of initially one year, with a second year of funding to be released after a satisfactory progress report at nine months.



The successful applicants will perform laboratory-based research using cell culture models to investigate cell therapies for Type 1 Diabetes. Candidates with prior experience in diabetes research or neuroscience/stem cell biology are encouraged to apply but candidates with relevant experience from other disciplines are also encouraged to apply. We are also recruiting a graduate research assistant in this round (advert reference P96792), to support the project and the work of the two postdoctoral researchers.



The post will include performing 2D and 3D tissue culture using human cell models. There will also be work using organoid and organ-on-a-chip to develop advanced human-relevant in vitro models.



A significant component of work will require experience of cell biology including imaging studies, ELISAs and multiplexing, cell signalling and cell-to-cell communication.



Some intercampus travel may be required.

The role of the Regional Research Specialty Leads is primarily to support research delivery within health and care settings, however on occasion the Leads will be asked to support wider NIHR and DHSC activities. Undertake eligibility reviews. Providing health and/or care intelligence to the on request study performance service[1] and the Active National Delivery service. Support funders and sponsors in study design to optimise deliverability, including providing early feedback on protocols. Advise on study deliverability and undertake deliverability assessments when requested, including giving consideration to equitable community-wide access/areas of high patient need. Building regional capacity and capability for study delivery in your Specialty. Ensure local needs for research delivery are identified and addressed as part of building the capacity and capability for research delivery. Working with us offers a good work life balance as we mainly work normal working/office hours, Monday to Friday. We are looking for somebody with prior clinical research experience to oversee the CRN Hepatology and Surgical portfolio of studies. The post holder will require established clinical skills in addition to their research knowledge and experience. However, having a clinical background or current experience within the field would be advantageous The post holder will be required to work autonomously with strong organisational, communication and IT skills to oversee the variety of studies within the portfolio with leadership and wider oversight from a Research Team lead. This role involves a close working relationship with the clinical hepatology and surgery multidisciplinary teams, in particular with consultants and specialist nurses. The post holder will be responsible for the day to day management and recruitment to a variety of studies which include both non-interventional (observational) studies and more complex interventional commercial trials such as investigational medical products (CTIMPs). The post holder will be based here in Exeter but be expected to travel to Plymouth and Truro to work with the renal clinical teams there. The UKKA is the leading professional body for the UK renal community, improving lives by supporting professionals in the delivery of kidney care and research. They welcome members working in clinical renal care, treating and caring for people with kidney disease, and those working in research, or related sciences and fields. The UK Renal Registry is the part of the UKKA responsible for the collection, analysis, management and development of a high quality clinical renal database. They use data submitted from the 71 adult and 13 paediatric renal centres across the country to create the database. The information, in the form of data and reports, is a shared resource used to develop research into kidney disease to improve the quality of care for renal patients. Main duties 1. Work with key stakeholders, both internal UKKA colleagues and across the participating Kidney Centres (or the relevant assigned Centre), to build an early understanding of the relevant rare disease datasets held in the RaDaR registry and the C3G and IC-MPGN study. 2. Establish effective working relationships with key stakeholders in each assigned Centre, liaising with key contacts to develop an agreed plan for relevant medical records (patients notes and electronic information) and biopsy reports to be accessed. 3. Work with the RaDaR senior data manager to conduct audits of the data, for relevant rare disease groups in each assigned Centre, to establish data gaps and inaccuracies. 4. Conduct on-site visits at relevant Centres, liaising with key contacts to identify priority data items on which to focus enrichment activities. 5. Liaise with UK Renal Registry contacts, particularly the RaDaR senior data manager, to access data completeness reports and updates, and guidance on where to find the data items. 6. Consult this report together with local records (patient notes and other data sources, which will vary depending on the Centre); cross-reference against data held in the RaDaR registry. 7. Where there are inaccuracies or gaps in completeness, manually add, transcribe and enrich the data. 8. Conduct subsequent audits in conjunction with the RaDaR senior data manager to establish and ensure improvements in data quality. 9. Provide regular reports and updates to the senior project manager, Rare Disease Groups and to RaDaR Chairs. About you We are looking for someone with a flexible and highly motivated attitude who is able to use their initiative and be innovative. You need to have an interest and understanding of data and renal terminology. You must have proven IT skills and be competent in data management. This role requires the ability to work autonomously, prioritise a workload and deliver to deadlines.
