Clinical: Advanced Nursing Responsibilities Responsible and accountable for the timely coordination and delivery of complex patient/participant centred clinical research trials, including the identification, recruitment and subsequent treatment, care and follow up of research patients/participants. Work on own initiative to undertake a wide range of duties relating to clinical research, backed up by professional skills and knowledge, including being able to respond in the event of clinical adverse events/reactions. Be highly skilled and competent in the comprehensive assessment of patients using theoretical knowledge and a wide range of experience to assess needs and administer care and treatment in accordance with research protocols Co-ordinate interventions which may include other disciplines, multidisciplinary team meetings, integrated teams within the hospital and in the community in relation to the research protocols and care pathways of patients/participants. Ensure all documentation and data are completed in a timely and accurate manner and that all information is stored and maintained appropriately. Clinical: Core Nursing Responsibilities Responsible for the assessment, planning and implementation of research protocols and clinical care and treatment, assists in the interpretation of data relevant to the patients/participants condition and progress within research trials. Assist in the identification of patient/participant problems and needs of the patient, their carers, senior nursing staff and other staff as appropriate. Record and report all adverse and serious adverse events/reactions to the relevant local personnel and external bodies as appropriate. Participate in the control, storage and competent administration of drugs and treatments as prescribed according to the NMC guidelines, the Trusts Guidelines for the Safe and Secure Handling of Medicines, research protocols and guidance from sponsors Demonstrate proficiency in the clinical skills required to care and treat the research patient/participant and with appropriate training develop new skills and new clinical trial treatments as required for service development. Maintain accurate documentation of care to facilitate the continuity of care for patients transferred to other areas. Promote a safe clinical environment for all patients, visitors and staff. Maintain the patients respect, dignity and privacy and to act with kindness and courtesy to all members of the public. Be aware of essential procedures and take appropriate action in the event of cardiac arrest, fire or major incident. Ensure practice is evidence based and is in line with local policies and procedures. Management To provide day-to-day supervision for nursing staff and support staff, including work planning and evaluation, training, development and guidance. Contribute to service development and delivery and business planning with the department manager and senior managers. Attend relevant local, regional and national meetings related to specific research trials and networks. Plan, manage and prioritise a complex workload, delegating to the team and reorganising work as necessary. Assisting in the feasibility and study set up process. Actively participate and feedback on a regular basis, to senior management, on the progress and delivery of research studies. Maintain appropriate patient/service and research records and monitor the standards of those of the team. Liaise with external research agencies as necessary and with relevant departments in order to ensure the smooth running of clinical research trials for patients/participants. Ensure collection of accurate local data and delivery to clinical trial centres in a timely manner adhering at all times to the terms of the Data Protection Act 1998. Adhere to all local standard operating procedures and policies. Contributes to the induction, management and development of team members. Participate in personnel functions such as recruitment, discipline, and the appraisal process in line with the Knowledge and Skills framework. Understand the wider departmental and organisational aims and priorities by engaging positively with the service and its users. To develop evidence based practice based on national policy and to ensure that these standards are monitored and adhered to by all members of the team. Establish links between primary care, secondary care, other research stakeholders in the management and delivery of clinical research. Demonstrate a sound understanding of clinical and research governance and risk management and ensure its effective application to the work place with guidance from departmental management when needed. Responsible for selection and maintaining research specific supplies and equipment. Leadership Acts as a role model to other members of the team, in regard to demonstrating professional behaviours and exemplary conduct. To demonstrate excellent prioritising and time management skills to meet the unpredictable and conflicting needs of the service and assist junior staff with their time management. Deputise as required for the Senior Research Communication Have excellent communication skills with patients/participants, their relatives and other healthcare professionals either in a one to one or group setting. Providing and receiving complex and sensitive information. To act as a contact point and coordinator for patients/participants requiring information and support and to refer patients/families on to other professional / agencies as appropriate. Adapt as appropriate communication with non-English speaking patients, patients with dysphasia, sensory deficits, learning disabilities and mental health issues and to advise team members as required. Ensure all clinical and research documentation is completed to the highest standard meeting NMC, GCP and Trust guidelines. Contributes to the creation of a high-performing working atmosphere in all departments by actively listening to others and encouraging feedback about the service. Policy and Service Development Work within the team to develop standard operating procedures to support clinical research practices and ensure these are updates as required. Responsible for the development, planning and co-ordination of a specialist service. To assist in the management, development and research of service, including service reviews. Training and Education Provide and promote health education and advice on treatments available within specialist area. Maintain a working knowledge of relevant current treatments and national clinical trials offered to patients both locally and nationally. Maintain awareness of future developments and technologies in specialist treatments as necessary. Contribute to the setting and monitoring of standards in nursing and service provision. To provide advice, teaching and training sessions to patients/participants, carers and members of the multi-disciplinary team. Ensure competence through teaching, development, clinical supervision and mentorship of junior nurses and support staff to ensure a high quality of clinical care within the specialty. To take responsibility for organising and implementing induction programs for each new team member. Audit and Research To work at all times in accordance with the regulations as described in Good Clinical Practice and relevant legislations, and to the most current guidance relating to Research Governance and Research ethics. Apply clinical appraisal skills in evaluating research protocols. Demonstrate knowledge of the pre-clinical data and specific rationale for clinical research. Assist nurse/health professional specialists in recording and storing data for audit and research purposes. Use research findings to develop evidence based/best practice. To plan and undertake the evaluation of practice and performance through clinical audit and studies and make recommendations for change and clinical effectiveness programs. To participate in quality assurance, service audit and outcome measures, devising suitable tools for the service. Use IT systems and databases as required within the role of research. Personal and Professional Development Attend mandatory and statutory training as required. Attend relevant education, training and study days as required. Devise and implement a personal development plan and participate in relevant study days. Maintain a reflective portfolio over time. Accountable for own practice and takes every opportunity to sustain and improve professional knowledge and competence Ensure that practice is in accordance with the NMC Code of Professional Conduct and other appropriate NMC and statutory guidelines. Ensure professional development plan is developed and worked towards, including awareness of new developments within the profession. Attending relevant post-graduate training and incorporating this knowledge into practice using the Knowledge and Skills Framework, CPD and PDP, as directed.
