We have a fantastic opportunity for an enthusiastic Science Technician to join our team at Winterbourne Academy on a Permanent Contract, starting on 6th January 2025.
The post-holder will play an important role in supporting the teaching staff within the Science Department and in ensuring the safe and proper use and maintenance of resources and equipment. They will provide technical and administrative support to teaching staff in Science Department, including some in-class support with student activities.
The Science Faculty delivers the full range of courses to A level, with significant numbers of students following the science pathway across groups of Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Applied Science.

We are looking for a Science Technician to provide support for our large, thriving and well-equipped Science department. The successful candidate will play an important role in giving students a wide variety of educational experiences in their Science lessons. Enthusiasm, drive and a passionate interest in this important subject area are all key attributes to this role. This is a permanent contract to start as soon as possible. The post could be full-time or part-time to suit the right candidate.
The ideal candidate will have 5 GCSEs (or equivalent) including English and Maths at grade C or above. Relevant experience and health and safety accreditation would be an advantage.

As a Biological Science Technician your duties will include, but are not limited to, the following:

• Takes and records instrument readings, performs standard tests, collects data, takes measurements and assembles information.
• Assists higher grades technicians with the operation of more sophisticated equipment or equipment systems.
• Assists in biological programs by performing animal husbandry duties for small wild mammals housed in captivity, such as cage cleaning, feeding and watering, as well as providing treatment for minor illnesses or diseases.

• Collects biological samples ensuring correct documentation, reporting, storage, transport, and delivery of samples taken.
• Uses established automated databases to enter, organize and perform preliminary analysis of collected data, using standard statistical methods in preparation of reports.
• Assists biologists in studying and preparing reports on effects to ecosystems from development proposals of local, state, and Federal government organizations.

• Assists in planning and execution of wildlife studies, censuses and surveys such as establishing schedules and procedures for accomplishing and reporting the work. Monitors and implement activities related to conservation, management, and/or control of wildlife. Captures, applies visual and radio tags, and gathers physiological and spatial data on wildlife.
• Assists in planning plants surveys and recommends plant management practices. Monitors and assists in control plant disease outbreaks, pest plant control, mowing/seeding activities and vegetation removal.
• Collects, assesses, and organizes biological and physical environment data from field investigations and reports findings to determine actual and potential impact on fish, wildlife or plant resources from development projects, restoration projects or habitat improvement projects.
• Use automated databases to enter, organize and perform preliminary analysis of collected field data, using standard statistical methods in preparation of wildlife and/or botany reports. Analyze and summarize biological data using a variety of database software programs or other presentation approaches, ensuring records are detailed, precise and accurately transferred (e.g., terrestrial, geologic, geographic, hydrologic, ecologic, and environmental data).
• Assist in preparing news release drafts for area media, and/or presenting informational or educational programs to individuals, local organizations, and schools.
