As a Prison Services Clinical Pharmacist, you will provide clinical pharmacy services to patients within your allocated prison(s) and support the team of pharmacy technicians and assistants. You will manage the day-to-day work of the pharmacy technicians within the team, supporting them clinically when on site. You will be making clinical judgments within your clinical ability where information is highly complex and the team need support.

You will undertake clinical visits within the prison, carrying out MUR’s, reviewing medication history of newly admitted offenders and proving clinics for patients to give advice and support on their prescribed medicines. You will be an active member of the clinical governance/medicines management committee(s), monitor prescribing trends, and assist in writing PGD’s when an appropriate use is identified. You will be required to train and educate nursing staff in the use of medicines and PGD’s to ensure safe, secure prescribing and handling of medicines is taking place within the prison(s).

As a Creative Arts Therapist, what does a typical week look like for you? With us, your day would start with a morning briefing, where you'll share updates and hear about the impactful work being done throughout our Integrated Therapy team.

2. To undertake all activities described in the GDC Scope of Practice. Carrying out work under the direction of a registered dentist who has examined the patient and indicated in writing the course of treatment to be provided. This is in accordance with the Dental Auxiliary Regulations 1986, as amended by the Dental Auxiliaries (amended) Regulations 1991.
3. To ensure that not less than 6.5 hours per day in 2 sessions are set aside for appointed patients.
4. To comply with all Health and Safety Policy directives and legislation.
5. To maintain own appointment book when a receptionist is not available and liaise between Dental Officer and patients concerning appointments.
6. To carry out preventive cross infection procedures including sterilisation of instruments and materials in compliance with current legislation (HTM 01-05) and best practice as described in DPHC (Dental) SOPs Chapter 17.
7. To manage his/her surgery to a high standard at all times with respect to cleanliness, equipment maintenance (including end-of-day), documentation and security.
8. To accurately record treatment on the integrated Electronic Health Records (either) such as the Defence Medical Information Capability Programme (DMICP).
9. To ensure that all periodontal patients and other risk categories that are entered on the IEHR are recalled for reviews and annual inspection appointments.
10. To collect and promptly file FMed 271s of his/her concern, reporting any appointment delays or FTAs to the Practice Manager, receptionist and/or patient as appropriate.
11. To carry out interim treatments (between dental examinations by the dentist), provided that the treatment intervals have been specified in the written prescription. (This is a GDC ruling and applies to DHs working in general practice, community or hospital service.)

12. Must be a fully qualified hygienist registered with General Dental Council (GDC) without restrictions.

To develop and manage new services that are built around new medicines or NICE guidance, where a new medicine/recommendations allow the development of a new care pathway. Provide education and training to the primary healthcare team on therapeutics and medicines optimisation. Support the Specialist Prison Service Pharmacist in providing education and training to the pharmacy team members as required. Identify from SystmOne patients prescribed medication that should be prescribed or initiated by Specialists/hospital doctors or subject to shared care and liaise directly with hospital colleagues to ensure prescribing and dispensing of such medicines is appropriately undertaken and adheres to the requirements of the secure environment. Develop, implement and maintain the prison formulary, in liaison with other OPS colleagues, and ensure this is updated onto SystmOne locally when changes are made. Manage the process if implementing changes to medicines resulting from MHRA alerts and product withdrawals and provide guidance for practitioners. Clinical Work with the dispensary and Primary Care teams to identify patients as at risk from high-risk medicines to minimise such risks through medicines optimisation. Provide scheduled clinics for offenders across the prison(s) and to give advice and support on their prescribed medicines, OTC medicines and other medical issues they may raise. To put in place changes to reduce the prescribing of medicines likely to cause readmission to high-risk patient groups. Promote healthy lifestyles for offenders in line with local and national guidelines or promotions. To be an active member of the prison(s) clinical governance/medicines management committee(s). To provide face to face clinics to help patients with questions, queries and concerns about their medicines. To hold clinics for patients requiring face-to-face Clinical Medication Reviews (CMRs) i.e. a review of the ongoing need for each medicine, a review of monitoring needs and an opportunity to support patients with their concordance with prescribed medication. To undertake clinical medication reviews with patients with multi-morbidity and polypharmacy and implement own prescribing changes (as an independent prescriber) and order relevant monitoring tests. To see patients in multi-morbidity clinics and in partnership with the Health and Wellbeing coordinator(s), implement improvements to the patients medicines, including deprescribing. Run own long term conditions clinics where responsible for prescribing as an independent prescriber for conditions where medicines have a large component (e.g. stable angina, warfarin monitoring and dose adjustment). To demonstrate on-going continual professional development (CPD) and be responsible for self-development and learning within the field of pharmacy or other specialty where appropriate Dispensary To act as responsible pharmacist in the dispensary Co-ordinate and manage the workload within the prison(s) Pharmacy Dispensary/Healthcare To undertake clinical screening and final accuracy checks when working in the dispensary.
