Job Description
TITLE: OPERATIONS MANAGER
FLSA STATUS: EXEMPT
REPORTING RELATIONSHIP: PLANT DIRECTOR
BASIC FUNCTION:
Under direct supervision of the Plant Director, assists in supervising plastic plant production and maintenance activities, shares responsibility for meeting production schedules, and manufacturing products in accordance with division, industry, and customer specifications at minimum cost and optimum efficiency. Works closely with the Plant Director in developing management skills and knowledge of the plastic container business.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Works closely with the Plant Director in the supervising of the Maintenance Managers, Production Manager and Shift Supervisors in the efficient performance of their duties and the effective operation of their departments. Assists in directing plant activities to achieve optimum utilization of machinery and equipment, and maximum efficiency in operations. Helps to assure attainment of delivery schedules by close coordination of production activities with the Plant Director, Materials Manager, Maintenance Managers, Production Managers, Production Supervisors and the production schedule. Assists in assuring conformance of finished product to the division, industry, and customer specifications. Assists all managers and supervisors in reducing scrap. Works close with all plant personnel to provide a safe and healthful work environment by taking an active role in the plant’s safety programs and goals. In coordination with the Plant Director, recommends capital improvements to plant which result directly in improved safety conditions, improved quality of finished product, resulting in added value, improved efficiency, or reduction of plant variable or fixed operating costs. As a manager, assures all plant safety/accident prevention policies are adhered as stated in the employee handbook. This includes maintaining a safe work environment and safe work practices, completing accident investigation when necessary, and ensuring any outside contractors adhere to Amcor policies and procedures in safety Assists in planning and overseeing the implementation of capital improvement projects to ensure adherence to approved plans, schedules, and budgets. Participates with other members of management in answering employee complaints, questions, and investigating suggestions. Assists in evaluating employee performance, recommends candidates for hire, promotion, demotion, transfer, or termination. Helps to assure continuing effective utilization of plant machinery and equipment by managing and improve maintenance programs. Participates in the development of work standards, workload leveling, machine loading, and plant layout. Assists in preparation of periodic reports pertaining to plant utilization labor efficiencies, materials usage, scrap, etc. Keeps informed of technical and management developments to assure continued personal growth and to coach other managers toward optimum performance. May be assigned special projects or investigations as directed by the Plant Director.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: Production Manager (1 direct), Shift Supervisors (4 indirect), Maintenance Managers (2 direct), Process Technicians (2 indirect), Resin Handlers (2 indirect)
QUALIFICATIONS:
Education Required:
A minimum of an Associates Degree or the equivalent in Engineering Technology or Business Administration. Bachelor’s Degree in the above fields preferred.
Experience Required:
Five years experience as a Supervisor or Manager, preferably in a manufacturing business.
AUTHORIZATION
Ability to shut down any machine if it poses an imminent danger to employee’s health and/or safety. Ability to shut down any machine because of a quality problem so suspect material can be contained. Ability to shut down any if it is down three times in one hour for the same mechanical problem. Authority to contact any staff or management team member with concerns, questions or suggestions pertaining to their job or work environment. Initiate Corrective Actions for violations of Company policies. Recommend hiring, termination and promotions of subordinates. Approve expenditures up to pre-determined amount identified by corporate guidelines without prior approval of Department Manager.
