ABOUT THE ROLE

City of London Academies Trust (COLAT) is seeking to appoint a Science Teacher for January 2025. You will be an experienced teacher looking for a new challenge or a newly qualified teacher. You must be able to teach Science (all disciplines) up to KS4. It would be highly advantageous if you can teach Science up to KS5.

ABOUT YOU

You will be an experienced and outstanding teacher or a new teacher starting your teaching career. You must have experience teaching Science up to KS4. You will have great behaviour management strategies and you will also have excellent organisation and communication skills to liaise with students, staff, parents and external organisations. About the Role

We are currently seeking an interim Research Immunologist to work with our global FMCG client, renowned for brands such as Dove, Sure, Persil, and Simple, to become an integral part of their fast-paced FMCG environment.

The position is based at Kings College, London. This is a full-time temporary role for 12 months, requiring 37.5 hours per week, Monday to Friday. Compensation for this role is competitive, paying up to £56,000 per annum, pro rata, depending upon experience.

BACKGROUND

The Science and Technology (S&T) pillar is charged with the delivery of breakthrough technologies and differentiated innovations to meet the needs of our consumers around the world, developing new functional ingredients for our leading brands. Human Biology (HB) is a Science and Technology Platform investigating the biological mechanisms that underpin key consumer phenotypes leading to the generation of new technologies for the next generation of personal care products and providing novel insights to support superior claims in the marketplace.

A UL Bioscience Hub has been established at Kings College London, with UL scientists based at Guys Campus. The main purpose of this Hub is to enable UL scientists to work alongside globally recognised experts in the Bioscience field, allowing access to world leading scientific expertise and technical capability.

An opportunity has arisen in the S&T Human Biology team for a PhD-qualified scientist to join our team at Kings College London, reporting to the Bioscience Hub leader & senior scientist for a 12-month maternity cover contract. The role is ideally suited to a self-motivated, resourceful research scientist with ability to work on their own initiative and with strong people and communication skills. A background in immunology is essential with a knowledge of skin biology highly desirable.

RESPONSIBILITIES

• Programme support: As part of the HB S&T programme, provide immunology expertise to support all project workstreams. Undertake lab-based research to identify new insights, targets & technology for relevant categories.
• External networks and resources: Leverage the best of both academia and industry, including assessing and working with independent service providers, to support the development of new technologies. Contribute to building the new KCL Hub and establishing an effective scouting network within the University.
• Science capability build: Support internal efforts to build knowledge and expertise in the area of skin immunology. Actively evaluate new science capabilities, establish relevant capabilities into practice and assist in alignment with relevant UL programmes.
• Business relationships: Build and maintain effective working relationships with project teams in Human Biology, Human Microbiome and business category stakeholders in UL.
• People/Skills Development: Be proactive, self-motivated, with ability to work on their own initiative and with strong communication skills, for delivering the immunology focussed Human Biology agenda and exploiting the opportunities of the KCL hub.

ALL ABOUT YOU

• A degree in a biological based subject is essential. A PhD, or equivalent experience, with a strong emphasis in human immunology is preferred. Experience of skin biology/immunology would be ideal, or other host-microbial interface such as hair and oral mucosa.
• Proven ability to handle primary cells, particularly immune cells, is preferred. Experience of co-culture systems, 3D models, histological analysis of immune biomarkers, and experience of managing tissue in accordance with the UK Human Tissue Act would be an added advantage.
• Omic measurements (e.g. RNAseq, proteomics etc) of cells and/or tissues and bioinformatic analyses thereof using R and/or other software platforms is desirable. Knowledge of single cell and/or spatial transcriptomic techniques is an added advantage.
• Proven ability to work collaboratively with both internal and external partners for new technology development, as well as initiating new partnerships
• Ability to effectively balance multiple concurrent activities and deliver to established deadlines.
• A strong interest in translational research and industrial R&D; the direct experience of delivering a research agenda in an industrial setting would be an added advantage.
• Fluent spoken and written English.

The post holder will work closely with the principal investigator, clinical and research teams to co-ordinate and deliver research within the Paediatric Clinical Trials unit, NIHR Biomedical Research Centre at Moorfields Eye Hospital. The post holder will deliver a high standard of clinical care and be able to work as an independent autonomous practitioner. Research specific duties, include: To be responsible for co-ordinating and delivering research trial within the Paediatric Clinical Trials unit, NIHR Biomedical Research Centre at Moorfields Eye Hospital and UCL Institute of Ophthalmology. Undertake the screening, identification and recruitment of eligible participants to relevant trials according to trial protocol and organisation SOPs. Adhere to the principles of Good Clinical Practice (GCP). Manage the clinical trial documentation including maintenance of site file(s). Provide orthoptic support, where necessary, to clinical trials within Moorfields Clinical Research Facility. Act as research contact regarding paediatric clinical trials for both patients and the wider clinical team. Maintain good and open communication with the clinical team to facilitate the identification and recruitment of potentially eligible participants. Maintain accurate and detailed record keeping in format adhering to trial protocol and local SOPs. Present research findings at relevant scientific meetings. Provide orthoptic input to the development of protocols and grant applications. Network with other researchers and build collaboration. Facilitate effective communication or research study information with all relevant research team. Have a high level of computer literacy and basic programming. Support orthoptists and other members of the clinical team in their roles in clinical research studies. Support and encouraging engagement with clinical research. Provide discharge and follow-up advice.

Main Areas of ResponsibilityYour responsibilities will include:

Assisting and advising teaching staff on the preparation and layout in classrooms for practical exercises, running trials of experiments, demonstrations and helping students with learning activities
Ensuring equipment and materials are prepared to the teacher's specifications, including making up special equipment or modifying from existing equipment
Advising students and staff on the safe and proper use of tools and equipment and on the correct and safe way to carry out learning activities
Assisting in the safety, repair and general maintenance of all resources, equipment and tools, and advising where any maintenance or inspection is beyond your competence
Ensuring the welfare and care of any plants and animals in the science area and the security of the equipment
Ensuring understanding of science syllabus and schemes of work to prepare for practical lessons adequately
Assisting with stock keeping
Undertaking safety checks and risk assessments to comply with the requirements of Health and Safety, COSHH and other relevant legislation and school documentation
Ensuring that all equipment and materials are stored safely, securely, and in good condition
Safe disposal of used chemicals/hazardous waste
Keeping up to date with health and safety regulations and with developments in practical science
Working with other technical staff to assist in keeping areas neat, clean, tidy and in a safe condition in readiness for lessons, as well as cleaning and making safe spills, breakages and related incidents
Qualifications & ExperienceWe would like to hear from you if you have:

Qualifications to A Level or equivalent (A Level in either physics, chemistry or biology)
COSHH training as appropriate
Basic knowledge of Health and Safety regulations
Good understanding of a range of chemicals and their properties
Experience or solid understanding of working as a technician in a school or educational establishment, undertaking a range of practical tasks
Experience of managing and being responsible for own workload.

What skills and experience we're looking for

We are looking for a hardworking, ambitious and dynamic qualified teacher to join Harris Academy Wimbledon as Teacher of Science. You will have excellent opportunities to engage in wider Harris Federation academy improvement and professional development activities.

The Teacher of Science will bea well-qualified specialist, holding QTS (or equivalent) and a relevant undergraduate degree, you will have the ability to teach from KS3 to KS5. The purpose of your role will be:

• To implement and deliver an appropriately broad, balanced, relevant and differentiated curriculum for students and to support a designated curriculum area as appropriate.
• To monitor and support the overall progress and development of students as a teacher/form tutor
