- Oversee a communication program that conveys the NCI’s leadership role in cancer research, diagnosis, prevention and treatment through the application of state-of-the-art and unified public affairs and media relations activities.
- Advise CEA and NCI Directors, providing leadership to a complex communications program which is highly visible both nationally and internationally and has an extensive impact on a broad range of constituencies in the public and private sectors.
- Provide strategic advice on handling sensitive issues and the release of information for highly visible and publicized studies, projects, and events that receive intense scrutiny by the public, the media, and Congress.
- Coordinate with NIH, HHS and the White House on the handing of these issues and represents the NCI Director in related interactions.
- Articulate and defend NCI position orally and in writing to international, national, regional, and local media as well as other federal agencies and citizens groups.
- Represent the NCI at public meetings and hearings on a wide range of controversial and highly visible issues.
