Key Responsibilities

• Provide proactive and effective coordination support to the KQ Labs team, ensuring seamless operations of the accelerator programme and curriculum
• Manage legal administration tasks to process the £40k convertible loans, including document management and liaising signatures with various stakeholders
• Manage and update spreadsheets on our impact, conduct research to keep financial data on our alumni current, and produce charts and summaries based on that information for the KQ Labs team and stakeholders
• Support the Events and Community Officer with logistical and operational support for KQ Labs events and community management
• Attend all curriculum events to ensure smooth execution and a positive experience for all attendees
• Support marketing and outreach efforts, including posting on social media to enhance our brand presence

People Engagement Advisor (People Team)

Short summary

The People Engagement Advisor is part of the People Projects and Engagement Team within the wider People function that supports all aspects of Working at the Crick, everything from ensuring people are paid to thriving within in our wider community.
The People Projects and Engagement team is responsible for overseeing and delivering people projects and initiatives, aligned to the People Strategy, ensuring these are prioritised and resourced accordingly to deliver expected outcomes. Key Responsibilities

Science Administration Manager

Short summary
The Service Delivery Manager manages a team of Science Operations Administrators across multiple floors. The team are the first point of contact for our science colleagues for all operational queries and are required to resolve or co-ordinate their resolution.
You will work alongside two other Service Delivery Managers in developing and managing the administration teams to ensure that all administration is co-ordinated, processes are developed, monitored, followed and continuously assessed to ensure that the team are providing the highest level of operational support to the science. It requires an experienced professional in business support and administration who has developed management skills, thrives in a busy and changing environment.


Key Responsibilities
• To be responsible for developing, managing and overseeing all aspects of the co-ordination of administrative service delivery by being the first point of contact, and source of expertise to Group leaders and Scientific Technology Platform (STP) leads for the administration of the full lifecycle of their research projects.
• To identify opportunities to continually improve processes and contribute to the implementation of proposed solutions including implementing, managing, and improving administrative processes by creating templates, standard approaches across the floors, guidance documents, workflows processes, management information and service level agreements.
• To line manage, induct, and develop the Science Operations Administrators across multiple floors.
• To provide project support to senior staff as required, including arranging meetings and acting as the point of contact between external collaborators, operational teams and research staff.

Postdoctoral Fellow – In Vivo


Short summary

The RNA Virus Replication Lab, headed by Dr David LV Bauer, was established in 2020 at the Francis Crick Institute. Our lab seeks to understand how RNA viruses replicate, how the unique properties of their RNA genome contribute to this process, and how immunity develops and in turn influences viral replication and evolution.

The Project
SARS-CoV-2 evolution has been characterised by antigenic “leaps” comprising large numbers of mutations (e.g. Omicron BA.1/2, then BA.2.86/JN.1) and natural recombination events between different strains (e.g. XBB). Monitoring of persistently infected patients and populations via wastewater suggests convergent evolution of immune escape mutations in Spike as well as fundamental viral adaptation to chronic infection.

This project aims to determine the host and viral factors that drive persistent infection, and their link with leaps of viral evolution using in vivo models. It will involve close collaboration with leading UK virology labs, as part of the Genotype-to-Phenotype 2 (G2P2-UK) Consortium. The successful candidate will be given wide latitude to decide on the exact aim(s), or to drive an independent project within these areas. (Please note that there is a separate position being advertised for molecular-focused work as well.)

Postdoctoral Fellow - Molecular

Short summary
The RNA Virus Replication Lab, headed by Dr David LV Bauer, was established in 2020 at the Francis Crick Institute. Our lab seeks to understand how RNA viruses replicate, how the unique properties of their RNA genome contribute to this process, and how immunity develops and in turn influences viral replication and evolution.

A potential project is to explore the molecular basis of RNA virus replication, focusing on viral genome transcription, replication, and packaging. (Please note that there is a separate position being advertised for in vivo-focused work on persistent infections as well.)
Some specific aims could take advantage of the resources available within our group and the wider institute:
• Examine molecular interactions between host/viral proteins and viral RNA using sequencing-based approaches established in our group (e.g. iCLIP, SHAPE-MaP, SPLASH, KARR-seq).
• Probe mechanisms of genome replication and packaging in infected cells, using established reverse genetics approaches coupled with Crick core facility expertise in structural biology and microscopy (cryoEM, cryoET, CLEM, and super-resolution microscopy)
• Dissect how viral gene expression patterns drive disease severity and patient immunity, using targeted, direct viral RNAseq established in the lab on clinical samples from the Crick/UCLH Legacy Study.

Postdoctoral Fellow

Short summary
The Schmack lab studies the biological mechanisms underlying psychosis. Our goal is to develop new biological treatments for psychotic disorders such as schizophrenia, and to generate fundamental insights into how the brain generates perceptions and thoughts. We are working on the interface of psychiatry, neuroscience and immunology. We are committed to visionary and rigorous science that is driven by shared passion and individual growth, and that pushes the boundaries of biological knowledge relevant to disease. We study human patients and mice using a range of methods including psychometric experiments, computational modelling, targeted neural circuit manipulations, and immunological techniques.

Key Responsibilities
Motivated by the emerging role of the brain in controlling immune responses and the immune system in psychosis, this project will examine the interplay between neuronal dynamics and immune processes in a psychosis mouse model. The project will employ a variety of techniques from computational psychiatry (e.g., psychometric behavioral tasks, cognitive modeling), systems neuroscience (e.g., high-density electrophysiological recordings, opto- and chemogenetics, endoscopic calcium imaging) and immunology (e.g., active and passive immunization, flow cytometry).

This is an excellent opportunity for a neuroscientist to contribute to a basic science research program relevant to psychiatry. The Schmack lab strives to provide a nurturing environment for all lab members regardless of background with an emphasis on professional growth and career development. Laboratory Research Scientist – Briscoe Lab

Project Summary

A Laboratory Research Scientist position is available in the Briscoe lab. The lab aims to understand the molecular and cellular mechanisms that underpin development, using the vertebrate neural tube as a model system.

The lab is looking for a highly motivated, proactive and enthusiastic researcher to help build upon the single-cell transcriptomics technology implemented in Maizels et al. The aim will be to develop affordable new sequencing technologies with increased throughput and resolution, facilitating novel research that would previously not be feasible.
Firstly, this work will feed into multiple on-going projects within the lab studying the transcriptional dynamics that govern cell fate decisions. Additionally, this work will connect with the projects of multiple collaborators working across clinical, diagnostic and commercial settings, who wish to apply the technology to questions spanning cancer therapeutics, immune profiling, brain disorders and neurodegenerative diseases.
The project will involve designing and performing experiments with tissue culture cells and carefully optimising novel genomics protocols. The Laboratory Research Scientist will work in collaboration with other lab members and the ability to work in a team is essential.


Key Responsibilities

Key experience and competencies

Operations Administrator (Service Delivery)Team

Short summary

The Administrator will play a key role in supporting the needs of the science at the Crick. As part of a team, you will provide comprehensive administrative support to the science across the Institute.
The role will be pivotal in ensuring all scientists, and science related teams, at the Crick have administrative support. The role reports to the Service Delivery Manager and will provide general administrative support to a number of groups as well as specialist support when necessary. The role will be part of a team, working closely with other Administrators and the wider Service Delivery Team.

Key Responsibilities
• Provide general administrative support to all laboratory-based staff
• First point of contact for queries from laboratory-based staff and answering queries in a timely manner
• Arrange internal and external meetings (including seminars, laboratory meetings, special interest group meetings, ad hoc meetings) book meeting rooms and equipment, produce visitor itineraries and arrange reimbursements as appropriate
• Arrange UK and overseas travel and accommodation and produce concise travel itineraries for Group Leaders and their visitors
• Manage travel and expense claims according to agreed policies; process, log and track expense claims
• Delivering an admin/floor induction for new staff to the Institute liaising with managers of the laboratories
• Proactively supporting the Laboratory Heads with recruitment related tasks such as organising interviews and ensuring all recruitment documents are completed appropriately and sent to HR
• Monitoring the end dates of visiting scientists, providing the Science Project Co-ordinators with details of all starters, leavers and extensions within set deadlines

Contracts Coordinator

Short summary

This is a unique opportunity to support the work of the Crick’s newly established Human Biology Facility (HBF), a dedicated team to support research with human participants, human tissues and data. You will be an essential part of the Facility’s Research Governance Team who oversee all elements of human research governance, compliance and ethics.

We are working closely with colleagues across the Crick, and especially in the Crick Legal, Governance and Compliance team (LGC), to further develop our process to support compliant and efficient contracting.

The Contracts Co-ordinator will be responsible for coordinating all relevant contacting activities on behalf of the Human Biology Facility, supporting decisions on all aspects of human biology contract requirements with support from LGC. The successful candidate will be expected to be able to coordinate a complex portfolio of Material Transfer Agreements (MTAs) and other contracts, undertake initial screening and deciding on the level of review required. They will monitor the progress of MTAs through negotiations, and help liaise with external partners and internal stakeholders. They will also provide some general administration and project management support to the Human Biology Facility.

Key Responsibilities
• To coordinate the receipt, review and signing of human biology contracts.
• Maintain excellent communication within the team, legal colleagues and science staff.
• To undertake initial reviews of MTA requests against pre-approved templates, internal protocols and guidance documents.
• To monitor and report on the progress of a complex portfolio of contracts against agreed performance indicators.
• To maintain appropriate records of contracts.
• To identify potential contractual and compliance issues, or barriers to progress and escalate issues internally within the team.

SLRS Medicinal Chemist

Short summary
The position is within the Chemical Biology Science and Technology Platform (STP), a newly formed and expanding interdisciplinary group, at the Francis Crick Institute.

The STP is recruiting for a creative and driven Medicinal Chemist/Chemical Biologist to expand the capability of the group, filling a unique scientific position in this recently established STP. The candidate will contribute to broadening the scientific capability of the STP, identifying unmet needs in chemical biology and leading projects to address them. They will independently prosecute both laboratory-based and consultancy-based STP collaborative projects. The candidate will have a particular focus on projects involving the design, synthesis and application of small molecule based chemical tools, to address complex biological questions. The successful applicant will be an independent thinker, able to develop new protocols and methods, using cutting edge chemical tools to tackle complex biological problems.


Key Responsibilities
• Identification and evaluation of opportunities for collaboration in support of work carried out within Crick-based research groups. Working independently, actively and creatively to design and execute strategies to address them.
• Provision of advice and practical input on the selection, design, synthesis and application of chemical probes.
• Design and prosecution of synthetic routes to access small molecule target compounds.
• Medicinal chemistry optimisation of hits to generate high quality tool compounds (using physicochemical properties, generation and analysis of on-target SAR in biochemical and cell-based assays, selectivity profiling, structure-based design etc).
• Provision of chemistry input to target-based and phenotypic screens; library design, screening strategy and evaluation and validation of hits.
• Collaboration with other STPs and research groups to characterise target engagement and molecular mode of action of chemical tools, applying biophysical assays, crystallography, cryoEM and omics profiling.

Laboratory Operations Assistant

Short summary
As a member of the Service Delivery team, the post-holder will provide essential, routine support for the research and Science Technology Platform (STP) laboratories based at the Francis Crick Institute on Midland Road. Laboratory Operations Assistants (LOAs) are typically assigned to a floor but are expected to work in other areas, as required, and therefore daily tasks may vary. This role allows the opportunity to develop into a more technical operations post where duties include supporting with stock management; scientific equipment maintenance, Health & Safety management & working with scientific groups to ensure the smooth running of the laboratories. The post is suitable for someone interested in pursuing a career in laboratory operations support.

Key Responsibilities
• Maintaining the organisation and cleanliness of the laboratory areas including the removal of waste.
• Stock management of laboratory supplies; including stock checking, updating the online/ electronic stock control book, receiving deliveries and assisting with restocking the store areas. Upholding the chain of custody from the logistics team to the researchers, ensuring cold storage items are stored correctly.
• Manage hazardous materials safely and according to protocols, including preparing hazardous waste for safe disposal.
• Support communal scientific equipment upkeep.
• Assisting with the inventory of chemicals in the laboratories and their safe storage.
• Engaging in filling of Liquid Nitrogen vessels and changing of gas cylinders as required.
• Any other duties as specified by the Technical Team Manager or Quadrant Manager.


The role involves daily porterage duties, including some heavy work and moving around a large facility covering several floors.
The working hours for this role will be Monday-Thur 8:00-16:15 and Friday 8:00-16:00.

Mechanical Workshop Technician

Short summary
Researchers at the Crick are undertaking a wide variety of physical, behavioural, and neurological investigations and use bespoke tools and systems that require design, development, and manufacturing to enable their science. The mechanical engineering workshop is key to this provision. The team work directly with scientists developing solutions to the scientific researcher’s needs.

The engineer manages a portfolio of projects from initial request, through scope definition, options analysis, design, development prototyping manufacturing and product refinement. Collecting User Requirements (verbal and written), transforming these into practical solutions, identifying / developing solutions, reviewing buildability and manufacturing techniques and technologies to deliver to science. Maintaining leading edge knowledge to use in the development of these products whether available in house or through specialist providers. Presenting options identifying technical solutions to deliver science outcomes.

This position requires someone with initiative, able to work independently and enjoys the challenge of producing bespoke items such as micro adjusters for imaging equipment, bespoke samplers, and attachments for scientific instruments.


Key Responsibilities
• Using a combination of manual and CNC machines to manufacture bespoke components from a variety of materials to a high standard of accuracy and quality
• Construction and modification of apparatus from own designs, drawings, and verbal instructions
• Advising clients on matters of mechanical design and construction, bringing concepts to the design stage using technical knowledge and experience to conceptualise and interpret the requirements of clients
• To discuss and evaluate the application and performance of specialised engineering equipment.
• Support the development/maintenance of operating procedures and risk assessments/method statements for products developed
• Produce engineering drawings and 3D models using design and drafting software such as Fusion 360 and AutoCAD. Ensure that components are manufactured and machined within the tolerances specified by the design

Senior Laboratory Research Scientist - High Throughput Screening

Short summary
The High Throughput Screening (HTS) facility is one of the core science technology platforms (STP’s) available to all researchers at the Crick. We enable researchers at all levels to use large-scale screening techniques as part of their research. Our most popular activities include arrayed genome-wide CRISPR deletion and CRISPRa over-expression screens, genome-wide RNAi screens, large-scale cell-based screens with collections of well-characterised small molecules or proof-of-concept probe or tool discovery screens. The majority of the output of these screens is high content imaging. We also develop novel screening platforms as required by researchers one example of which is our development of a high throughput neutralisation assay to assess the ability of patient serum to prevent SARS Cov-2 infection (now succesfully spun off as a separate unit within the Crick).

Key Responsibilities
• Full project engagement and involvement (both strategically and at the bench) from initial assay development, to prosecuting the screen and final data analysis
• Quickly understand new biological systems and techniques when necessary and drive the whole screening process
• Creation of cell-based assays for high throughput screening applications in collaboration with, and harnessing the expertise of, domain experts
• Using existing High Content Imaging and liquid handling infrastructure effectively and inventively across a wide range of projects
• Employ a range of different reagents and where appropriate reagents are not available, create new ones e.g. creating cell lines
• Independently explore new screening techniques and approaches with a focus on meeting the user’s needs within tight timelines
• Establish viable cell free assays and prosecute such screens at scale with a range of modalities (e.g. HTRF, FP, thermal shift assays)
• Maintaining a productive dialogue with users throughout project lifecycle
