You will work under the remit of the Head of Data Engineering as part of the Digital Directorate and will be a key member of the Data Engineering team working primarily on day to day ETL operations, as-well as working with the wider Performance Team and Digital Team to meet the data management needs of the Trust.
As a Data Engineer you will be fundamental in developing and constructing data models for our services data warehousing needs as-well as integrating them into systems and business processes to support self-serve reporting, compliance reporting and third-party data integrations.
You will provide specialist advice across a range of IM&T areas e.g. applications, information interpretation, data analysis, information reporting, information governance.
You will investigate a range of specialist or complex IM&T issues and beresponsible for strategic planning within specialised areas.
You may need to analyse complex data and produce information reports or develop and deliver specialised training or design, develop, adapt complex software / web pages / information reports.
You may manage an IM&T project or develop training programmes.

Key Responsibilities
You will report to a Lead Data Engineer and/or the Head of Data Engineering and have personal responsibility for:
- implementing data flows to connect operational systems, data for analytics and business intelligence (BI) systems
- document source-to-target mappings
- re-engineer manual data flows to enable scaling and repeatable use in an automated way
- support the build of data streaming systems
- write ETL scripts and code to make sure the ETL process performs optimally
- build accessible data for analysis
In order to fulfil these responsibilities, you will require specialist knowledge across range of procedures underpinned by theory Specialist knowledge and expertise across one or more specialised areas, acquired through degree level or equivalent qualification/ industry experience plus additional specialist knowledge.

Your main tasks in this role are defined as follows:
Communicating with Stakeholders
You will provide and receive highly complex, sensitive or contentious information; agreement or co-operation required; present complex, sensitive or contentious information to large groups. You will communicate to a range of IM&T issues which can be complex and multi-stranded. You will need to negotiate on priorities on e.g. IT training, system design and development, reporting processes with non IM&T managers; along with training or presenting on complex IM&T issues.
You will be expected to allocate work; train other IM&T staff/delivers training in own specialism to other staff and organisations
Data analysis and synthesis
You will undertake data profiling and source system analysis and can present clear insights to colleagues to support the end use of the data.
You will deal with Complex facts or situations requiring analysis, interpretation and comparison of a range of options. Analyses, investigates and resolves complex IM&T queries and issues/problems e.g. System errors, breaches of security or confidentiality, user requirements which may require configuration of software and hardware, unusual data trends, training requirements based on needs analysis.
Data development
Design and develop major information systems to meet specification of others Responsible for the planning, development, review, update, upgrade and introduction of major new IM&T systems to meet user requirements. e.g. Redevelopment of aspects of patient care system, business systems, infrastructure, information systems.
Data innovation
You will seek out opportunities for innovation with new tools and the use of data and plan and organise a broad range of complex activities; formulate, adjust plans or strategies, plan specialist projects which impact across clinical and non clinical areas. E.g. Plan training delivery for a team of trainers or for a new system.
Data integration design
You will deliver data solutions in accordance with agreed organisational standards that ensure services are resilient, scalable and future proof.
Data modelling
With your understanding of the concepts and principles of data modelling, you will produce, maintain and update relevant data models for specific business needs. You will know how to reverse-engineer data models from a live system.
Metadata management
You will work with metadata repositories to complete complex tasks such as data and systems integration impact analysis. You will assist in maintaining a repository to ensure information remains accurate and up to date.
Problem resolution (data)
Being aware about the types of problems in databases, data processes, data products and services, you will debug and unpack errors raised within our manual and automated processes.
Programming and build (data engineering)
You will design, code, test, correct and document simple programs or scripts under the direction of others using T-SQL, Store Procedures, Basic C# and or low-code tooling.
You will have developed physical skills; advanced keyboard use; highly developed physical skills, accuracy important; manipulation of fine tools, materials. Inputting and manipulating data, information into computer databases, system; uses fine tools when working on IM&T systems
Testing
You will regularly design, code and execute test scripts to support ETL processes defined within our platforms
In addition to the day to day aspects of your role you will also have a responsibility to:
- Contribute to the development, migration and implementation of our Data Warehousing Solutions as they evolve and modernise over time.
- Participate in the planning sessions of business as usual work and in-flight projects
- Assist Senior and Lead Engineers in meeting our requirements for commissioner and national submissions within agreed timescales
- Attendance of meetings as and when required in relation to departmental modernisation, business critical system changes / issues, as-well as providing technical and non-technical advice on request.
- On occasion, to commit to out of hours work for key migrations, and or manual modifications to systems / datasets to minimise critical business disruption.
- Monitor scheduled jobs for failures, escalate and work with Senior or Lead Data Engineers to resolve.
- Undertake other duties commensurate with the role.
