Job Description
To assist the Litigation and Social Care team in the provision of a high quality and efficient legal service to the Council, its members, officers and committees. The job is flexible and will be split between being desk based in the Council HQ and homeworking and may require out of office meetings and site visits.
Requirements
The Litigation and Social Care team sits within the Council’s Legal Services Section The team deals with a diverse and complex range of work reflecting the variety of issues for which the Council has responsibility, ensuring that at all times the council operates in accordance with the law in an increasing complex statutory and regulatory environment The team is responsible for advising on a wide range of matters and more specifically on matters arising from Education, Social Work (covering a range of issues including those related to adults, children, Child Protection, Adoption and Fostering, Community Care and Adults with Incapacity), general litigation and debt recovery work. The majority of staff time is spent supporting the work of internal clients, namely the various services on core matters but staff also routinely provide advice and guidance relative to service policies and procedures, governance issues and also act as legal advisers relative to business transacted at the Council’s various Committees and subcommittees.
You will assist the team in the following areas:
3.1 Provision of legal advice to the Council, its Committees, Members and Officers, both written and verbal in relation to the areas of responsibility of the Litigation and Social Care team.
3.2 Representation of the Council in Court and Tribunals etc.
3.3 Progressing all work relevant to the Litigation and Social Care remit
3.4 Co-operation with other Solicitors and Assisting Paralegals
3.5 Deputising for the Legal Services Manager
3.6 Undertaking such Other Duties as may from time to time be allocated
3.7 Supervision of the team in accordance with Moray Management Methods.
Responsibilities
Experience in a local authority/ public sector context. *
LLB, Bachelor of Laws, DIP LP, Diploma in Legal Practice & Law Society of Scotland - Practising Certificate
Advanced communication skills, complex and specialised research/ analytical skills. Ability to work with a high degree of autonomy and as part of a team. IT literate. Good time management skills.
Experience in litigation and social care environment - ability to manage varied workload. Ability to act as a source of advice and guidance within the team and set an example for others. Ability to identify and implement process improvements.
Advanced communication & presentation skills. Positive outlook. Ability to relate to people at all levels.
