Who You’ll Work With

Arista Networks is looking for world-class Linux Kernel and BIOS software engineers to join our Kernel software team.

Our Kernel team is responsible for keeping pace with the latest developments in the Linux Kernel and integrating them for our internal use, both for development and as a base for Arista EOS to run on. This work often involves extending and developing new kernel features related to functionality that we rely on and working with the kernel community to get them integrated upstream. Kernel software engineers are also responsible for the CPU subsystems on all Arista products. You will evaluate new CPUs and work with CPU/BIOS vendors to integrate their stacks into EOS. You will also be responsible for bringup and qualification of these components into our hardware products.

Arista Software Engineering roles demand a strong and broad software engineering background. While the primary focus area for this role is Kernel/BIOS software, the role will cover all aspects of software development spanning the addition of new features, debugging problems and fine tuning code for scalability and performance. You will own your projects from definition to deployment and customer interactions, and you will be responsible for the quality of everything you deliver.

What You’ll Do

• Develop and maintain Kernel features and tests using C, C++ and Python, review and contribute to functional and design specifications. Build automated tests and test infrastructure to validate the features.
• Work with hardware engineers and vendors to qualify new Kernel dependent hardware components like CPUs and NICs for integration into Arista products.
• Work with the Kernel community to contribute features back to the mainstream.
• Work with a team of Kernel engineers to integrate new versions of the Kernel for use in EOS and our internal development.
• Work with Customer Support Engineers and customers to analyze, mitigate and fix problems in customer networks.
• Work with the System Test Engineers to analyze problems found in their tests and provide fixes for those problems.
• Mentor new and junior engineers to bring them up to speed in Arista's software development environment.

Who You’ll Work With

The TSE works in a non-silo environment, supporting all of Arista’s products and the many network protocols and features covered by EOS. He or she will work directly with both the customer and (when needed) the software and hardware development teams. The TSE team also performs all their own recreates in a dedicated lab environment.

Giving customers direct access to a high-level engineer streamlines the support process and raises customer satisfaction.

• Respond to customer product inquiries via telephone or in written, internet-based email.

CloudVision’s core infrastructure is a scale-out distributed system providing real-time and historical access to the full network state, along with frameworks for building advanced analytics. It’s written in go and leverages open source technologies like HBase, ClickHouse, ElasticSearch, and Kafka under the covers. We’re constantly investing in scaling out the platform and building out richer analytics capabilities in the infrastructure.

What You’ll Do

As a backend software engineer at Arista, you own your project end to end. You and your project team will work with product management and customers to define the requirements and design the architecture. You’ll build the backend, write automated tests, and get it deployed into production via our CD pipeline. As a senior member of the team you’ll also be expected to help mentor and grow new team members. This role demands a strong and broad software engineering background, and you won’t be limited to any single aspect of the product or development process.

As a Software Engineer your core responsibility is to deliver new cutting edge product features. A major part of this is writing and owning the design/implementation of the code that drives our products. However, the role of a Software Engineer is much bigger than ‘simply’ writing code. 

Software engineers work on the whole development process, including:

Qualifications

• Experience: Having over 10 years of networking industry experience.
• Proven expertise in creating test methodologies and writing test plans.  
• Strong knowledge in the following areas: 802.1X, RADIUS, TACACS+, AAA, NAC, VLANs, IP Routing, TCP/IP, L2-L3 protocols. 
• Must have experience in configuring wired switches and wireless access points of different vendors for network access use-cases.
• Experience with Identity Providers like Okta, Azure Active Directory, OneLogin will be desired. 
• Experience with testing cloud-native SaaS applications will be desired.
• Experience with working on other AAA or NAC products will be desired.
• Work with the developers on your team in creating their plans for automated tests to complement the exploratory testing that you perform. 
• Participate in functional specification and software design reviews held by your team and provide customer  centric input.
