We are inviting applicants for the post of Clinical Research Fellow in Urogynaecology. Candidates should be highly motivated to undertake a postgraduate degree and they will be expected to register (and self-fund) an MPhil with the University of Manchester, with the potential to convert this to an MD degree, depending on academic progress. These are also clinical posts and candidates should be at a level expected of an ST3+ trainee. The split between academic and clinical time is 60%/40%. Candidates who are successful at interview will be expected to apply for Out of Program Research (OOPR) if they are currently in a training post.



This post is ideally suited towards candidates considering future subspecialty training in urogynaecology, whilst maintaining clinical skills through working in busy tertiary and secondary care settings.

The Research post will involve a mixed methods evaluation of women who have sustained complications of polypropylene mesh. There will be a qualitative study to understand their lived experience of mesh complications. There will also be an observational study which will investigate the potential cause of the pain some women experience following polypropylene mesh continence procedures.

The Clinical Research Fellow will be supervised by a team of consultants. The Clinical Research Fellow will need to respect the roles of others within a multidisciplinary team and communicate with them appropriately.

The weekly timetable will vary from week to week. The clinical component may include sessions in Urogynaecology outpatients, urogynaecology theatre and ward rounds, or other specialist sessions. Research days are usually fixed.

Duties And Responsibilities To aseptically prepare high quality Cytotoxic/MABS/EAMS etc. in accordance with departmental procedures, Good Manufacturing Practice and COSHH regulations ensuring that all work complies with all regulatory frameworks and standards. Ensure that cleaning in all areas of the production unit is completed according to GMP and departmental policies and procedures. To ensure ingredients and disposables are assembled, disinfected and transferred through the Aseptic Services Unit appropriately. To accurately prepare worksheets and labels for aseptic products using the units computer system using JAC and iQEMO program if required. To assist with the preparation of a variety and routine complex documentation within the aseptic unit. To assist with the recording and analysis (where appropriate) of data, both manually and on the computer. Actively participates in the departments training, accreditation, validations and re-validation program. To be responsible for the maintenance of stock in the Aseptic Unit including evaluating stock levels within the Aseptic Unit assisting the ordering Technician to ensure adequate stock is maintained at all times. Ensure all Environmental monitoring plates are received and stored in the correct manner to ensure they are protected from contamination. Prepare environmental samples and checking detailed documentation for dispatch to QCNW To be responsible for routinely receiving, analyzing and documenting complex Environmental Reports from QCNW and referring any variances to senior staff in a timely manner, to determine best course of action eg resolving issues. Undertake any mandatory training, updates and courses in line with local and Trust policies. To complete all Aseptic Services Unit competency-based training packages. To participate in and co-operate with, individual personal assessment, continuing professional development and continuing education programmes to develop personal competencies and knowledge base. When appropriate to demonstrate activities to, work experience students, pre-registration pharmacists, pharmacy technicians, student pharmacy technicians and staff undergoing induction. Where appropriate, propose improvements to procedures e.g SOPs in own work area Communication and Leadership Communicate with other team members regarding activities within the Aseptic Services Unit may involve sensitivity and/or complex information. Carry out and plan on-going general administration tasks according to the Aseptic Unit on-going requirements and refer queries to the appropriate person. To ensure effective communication channels are maintained by all staff and any disagreements are dealt with promptly and in line with the Trusts respect policy. Participate in staff discussions during internal meetings and as part of a group when required. Finance: To effectively manage a designated stockholding to ensure that stock wastage is minimised. To assist the Senior/Specialist Technicians in managing the Aseptic Services stock takes. To comply with legal and Trust requirements relating to the purchase, supply, use safe custody and destruction of medicines within Pharmacy and other areas of the Trust. 12 Freedom to act Effort and Environment Factors: Demonstrable skills for manipulation of pharmaceutical products. Other Duties: The provision of a high-quality service delivered in a professional and courteous manner is a requirement of all staff employed by the Pharmaceutical Service. I It will be a requirement of the post holder to participate in the Aseptic On-Call preparation service for chemotherapy outside normal working hours on a rotational basis. This position is suitable for an enthusiastic and research-motivated applicant with a Medical degree, who is pursuing a career in Medical Oncology and has an interest in gaining further research and clinical trial experience in the area of Renal cancer.

The successful candidate must hold full General Medical Council (GMC) registration with license to practice and have International English Language Testing System (IELTS)/OET proficiency at the time of post commencement, as appropriate. The Fellowship is a two year, full-time position to support clinical research and to provide specialist experience and training for the successful applicant.

Salary will be on the Specialist Registrar scale. The salary will be dependent on previous experience and qualifications and aligned with the 2016 junior doctor contract (https://www.bma.org.uk/pay-and-contracts/pay). There is no on-call commitment attached to this post.

Successful applicants will need to divide their time between research and a moderate clinical commitment.

The post will be based within the Department of Medical Oncology under the supervision of a consultant clinician.

The post-holder will work closely with other members of the respective multidisciplinary teams and will support the consultants, clinical fellows, specialty trainees, clinical research nurses (CNSs) and advanced nurse practitioners (ANPs) in managing the renal cancer disease group patient workload and clinical trial portfolios. This will facilitate more rapid clinical decision making, an increase in the number of trials opened, together with increased recruitment of patients into new and existing research protocols.

The Fellow will attend appropriate clinics per week (a maximum of four clinics), and multidisciplinary meetings. In addition, they will participate in clinical research meetings and any other relevant trial planning or trial set-up meetings. The Fellow will also spend time reviewing clinical data, writing abstracts/manuscripts, planning new studies and attending educational meetings.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

There are currently three substantive consultants working in the Renal cancer disease group (Dr Tom Waddell, Dr Manon Pillai and Dr Victoria Foy), each with a part-time contribution to renal cancer.

The appointee will be at The Christie and will be based within the Department of Medical Oncology under the supervision of the three consultants. The post-holder will work closely with other members of the multidisciplinary team and will support the consultants, clinical fellows, specialty trainees, CNSs and ANPs. They will also support the research team in managing the renal disease group clinical trials portfolio. This will help to facilitate an increase in the number of available recruiting trials, together with increased recruitment of patients into new and existing research protocols.

Clinical Research fellows will have the following opportunities within the Department of Medical Oncology:

·Audit: Fellows play a key role in Clinical Audit as a member of The Christie Medical staff.

·Clinics: Research fellows in Medical Oncology usually attend a number of outpatient clinics per week (seeing new referrals, follow-ups and patients on clinical trials) and are expected to undertake the administrative duties associated with the care of these patients.

·Clinical Governance: Fellows are expected to participate in all relevant aspects of clinical governance, including maintaining up-to-date protocols, guidelines and clinical audit, under the supervision of the Consultants in the team.

·Protocol Development: Fellows may assist with the revision and development of evidence-based clinical trial protocols for patients.

·Research: There are excellent opportunities for research within the Department. Fellows are encouraged to contribute to current research projects within the unit and/or set up new projects. The Manchester Cancer Research Centre has been established to bring together the expertise, ambition and resources of partner organisations, which include the University of Manchester, the Cancer Research UK Manchester Institute, Cancer Research UK, in addition to The Christie NHS Foundation Trust.

In addition, there is an annual research event where all Medical Oncology fellows are encouraged to present their ongoing research and a little about themselves. There are also weekly teaching sessions in practical life skills related to Medical Oncology, such as interview skills, oral presentation skills, curriculum vitae preparation, media training, career development etc.

The Trust supports the requirements for continuing professional development (CPD) as laid down by the GMC and surgical colleges and is committed to providing time and financial support for these activities.

Role Planning

The weekly timetable for the post is flexible and can be agreed with Dr Tom Waddell prior to commencement in post. As outlined previously, this would include a maximumof two research and two NHS clinics per week.
