Guest Relations and Patient Transport :

• The incumbent carries out required performance of this position as transportation program support assistant Guest Relations Program to the Office of Veteran Experience. The program is designed to provide Veterans/patients, their families and visitors with staff who can respond quickly to inquiries, identify problems, and improve the experience of those visiting the campus. The services are designed to respond to customer immediate needs including navigation, direction, and information assistance.
• As a key challenge of patients, navigating the campus will be a primary focus along with providing a positive first impression. For those who do not know how to access medical center programs and/or services, personal assistance will be provided by the staff. The incumbent serves as the initial, as well as the final point of contact for guests entering and leaving the facility and is a key influence toward patient/public perception. In this role, the incumbent performs these responsibilities using skills that will foster a culture of care at the VA facility. The incumbent is assigned to the Office of Veteran Experience and Employee Engagement.
• The incumbent performs customer service guest relations, shows understanding, friendliness, courtesy, tact, empathy, cooperation, concern, politeness respect and dignity to others; relates well to people from varied backgrounds and different situations. Independently conducts group guidance sessions of a varying nature. This counseling deals with institutional adjustment, U.S. Parole commission, release planning, and interpersonal communications, individual counseling sessions varying in methods and intensity relevant to the individual's problems. They may focus on helping the individual offender understand and live within the complex family circumstances and assist him in developing new adjustment techniques. The Case Manager helps the offender view problems objectively and to deal with them realistically. Routinely deals with community resources to secure information and develop release plans. Prepare special progress reports for such consideration as parole, transfer, restoration of forfeited good time, and makes appropriate recommendations. Corresponds with attorneys, judges, probation and parole officers and other professionals regarding the inmate's case.

Prepares diagnostic studies, responsible for collecting, interpreting and evaluating factual information reflecting developmental and circumstantial factors for the assigned caseload of inmates. Acts in a liaison capacity with other units and institutional employees on matters concerning inmate behavior. Serves as the primary liaison with the U.S. Parole Commission in reporting the inmate's program progress, readiness or lack of readiness for release, and resources in the community relevant to the desirability of his release. Actively develops program planning by presenting cases to the Unit Team and coordinating case management services with other correctional disciplines.

The program at VAAAHS comprises of approximately 400 active research projects under 150 active research investigators. Annual research support totals about $18.7M of direct VA support and a total research budget of $25M (including National Institutes of Health [NIH], Department of Defense [DoD], industry, nonprofit, and University funded programs) and the balance administered by the VA-affiliated non-profit research corporation (VA-NPC) Veterans Education Research Association of Michigan (VERAM), and the academic affiliate (University of Michigan). The Deputy Associate Chief of Staff duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:

Direction & Strategic Planning 40 %

• Has technical and administrative responsibility to provide staff supervision and evaluate all health-related programs and management policies pertaining to the agency. Participates in long-term strategic planning and exercises delegated decision making authority for resource management of the agency's research and development programs and policies and is responsible for evaluating the impact of current research standards on programs.
• The Deputy ACOS/R&D monitors the effectiveness of the interactive systems and procedures necessary to advance the research program in accordance with all principles, rules, and regulations affecting research within the VA. Likewise, the Deputy ACOS/R&D monitors the effectiveness of the interactive systems and procedures necessary to advance the research program regarding NIH, DoD, FDA and other national rules and regulations. The Deputy ACOS/R&D also evaluates research productivity and the contributions of programs to the goals of the VAAAHS and the agency. In this capacity, the Deputy ACOS/R&D exercises oversight of programs, principal investigators, and their staff.
• This position establishes guidelines and performance expectations for principal investigators and their staff, which are clearly communicated through the formal employee performance management system.
