Area Information:

This position is stationed at South Rim of the Grand Canyon National Park located in Northern Arizona. The South Rim is approximately 60 miles north of Williams and 82 miles Northwest of Flagstaff, at an elevation of 7,000 feet. Temperatures range from approximately 90 degrees in the summer to 0 degrees in the winter. Annual precipitation averages around 13 inches.

Grand Canyon Village has schools K-12, a daycare center, post office, general store, churches, a recreation center with gym, a public library, a clinic with resident physicians, and several restaurants. The park community consists of some 2,500 people, including employees of the NPS and concessioners and their family members. There are often employment opportunities for family members in the park and surrounding areas. The park community is small enough that many employees choose to walk or bike from their homes to work. Complete shopping, educational, medical, and professional services are available in Williams and Flagstaff. Flagstaff has a population of about 75,000 and has multiple K-12 public and private schools, Northern Arizona University, and diverse community, medical and other support services. Recreational opportunities include hiking, backpacking, fishing, cross-country and downhill skiing, and golfing in nearby communities.

South Rim Housing: Permanent and Term employees with a Full Performance Level (FPL) of a GS-09 or WG-8 and above will be provided the option of accepting assigned housing, participating in the normal bid system, or accepting shared housing. Major Duties:

• The primary function of Maintenance Workers is to clean restrooms, stock restroom supplies and clean other facilities by vacuuming, sweeping, dusting and cleaning windows.
• In addition, maintenance workers collect and dispose of trash from roadsides and parking lots, remove limbs and other obstructions from roadsides and grounds.
• Maintenance workers also operate small equipment such as leaf blowers, string trimmers and hedge trimmers; in addition to operating push lawn mowers and zero turn mowers.

• Resource Stewardship - Directs an intricate program of natural and cultural resource management activities and established programs that involves sensitive and complex issues, the entire breadth of natural and cultural resource management, research, compliance, planning, and the application of natural and cultural resource management and law and policy to agency operations.
• Leadership team - Serves as principal advisor to the Superintendent, Deputy Superintendent, and park management team on all technical and professional matters related to natural and cultural resource management, NEPA and Section 106 compliance, planning, and land management. Establishes and maintains highly effective working relationships with other members of the leadership team and makes positive contributions to management of park-wide issues and projects.
• Supervision - Carries out the full scope of supervisory and personnel management responsibilities, including the recruitment, training, counseling and evaluation of resource management staff, interns, and volunteers.
• Serves as the park lead for all aspects of environmental and historic preservation compliance and planning, including park-wide and resource management plans, NEPA, and Section 106.
• Partnerships - Develops partnerships and collaborations within and outside of the NPS with a variety of entities including Native Hawaiian organizations, local, state and federal governments, academia and partner organizations to achieve resource stewardship goals. The primary purpose of these positions is to perform Project Work related to historic and non-historic Park Trails and Structures repair, maintenance, renew, and restore. Performing these trails laboring duties will require moderately heavy physical effort requiring the use of common hand tools and power equipment and will involve any or all of the following duties:

• Operate vehicles (up to 10,000 pounds) to transport personnel, materials, or equipment.
• Operate heavy power equipment such as chainsaws, leaf blowers, brush cutters, brush chippers and all types of hand and light power tools.
• Perform trail work including maintenance/repair/rehab of bridges, tread surfaces, rock walls, drainage control, etc.
• Cut trees, performs heavy vegetation management and cleans erosion control structures on wilderness and non-wilderness trails using axe, chainsaws, crosscut saws, power weeders, loppers, brush cutters, picks, mcleods, etc.
• Hike 8-10 miles daily into the backcountry while carrying loaded packs and gear to perform trail maintenance and rehabilitation work.

POSITION LOCATION: Shenandoah National Park preserves and protects more than 300 square miles of nationally significant natural and cultural resources, scenic beauty, and congressionally designated wilderness within Virginia's northern Blue Ridge Mountains; and provides a broad range of opportunities for public enjoyment, recreation, inspiration, and stewardship. Within just 90 miles of Washington D.C. the Park provides visitors the ability to explore mountain peaks, hidden hollows, cascading streams, accessible wilderness, and stunning natural beauty. Approximately 40% of the Park is designated wilderness with over 500 miles of hiking trails and the iconic Skyline Drive, SHEN was established as an eastern Park that provided a "western Park experience". Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks represent an extraordinary continuum of ecosystems (96% designated wilderness) arrayed along the greatest vertical relief (1,370 to 14,505 feet elevation) of any protected area in the lower 48 states. They are the highest, most rugged reaches of the Sierra Nevada Mountains (including Mount Whitney at 14,500 feet elevation) and feature the world's largest trees - Giant Sequoias. Sequoia National Park is the nation's second oldest national park (established September 25, 1890) and encompasses 404,863 acres. Kings Canyon was established on March 4, 1940, and encompasses 458,847 acres. Physical Demands: The work is partially sedentary with prolonged standing, walking, and bending often required. Heavy items (e.g., packs and equipment up to 50 pounds) must be lifted and carried on a routine basis.

Working Conditions: The work is performed in an office, laboratory, and in the field. Field work includes exposure to extreme weather conditions and terrain, pesticides, poisonous plants, biting insects, and wild animals. Laboratory work may involve exposure to hazardous chemicals.

Air Quality: Poor air quality afflicts Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks, especially during summer months - generally May to October. High ozone levels may be the most harmful pollutant here. • Work independently with a pack team of up to four (4) llamas to service backcountry restroom facilities.
• The incumbent should be familiar with and have experience with llamas specifically.
• The main purpose of this position (as an Animal Packer (Custodial), at this level) is to hike to backcountry toilet facilities to process waste and recycling, leading llamas to pack tools and supplies in and solid waste out.
• Animal Packers must use and maintain equipment and operate vehicles and pickup trucks to transport supplies, materials and pack animals.
• Back county travel is required for this position.

Physical Demands: When incumbent is maintaining backcountry toilets, he/she must be able to hike distances of 2 to 12 miles at elevations ranging from 7,500 feet to those exceeding 12,000 feet using a string of llamas to pack in supplies and equipment and waste out. Loads animals in a heavy duty pickup in order to transport them to trail heads. Light to moderate physical effort is required in performing custodial duties. Incumbent is required to walk, stand, bend, reach, stoop, and kneel for extended periods of time. Moderately heavy physical effort is used occasionally in moving, setting up, and working from ladders and scaffolding. Use of heavy powered cleaning equipment is required, but not on a continual basis. Incumbent exerts light physical effort in reaching, bending, turning, or moving hands, arms, feet, and legs to operate hand and foot controls. He/she exerts moderate physical effort in the frequent. handling of objects weighing up to 40 pounds, and the occasional handling of heavier objects while loading cargo with the assistance of other workers.

Working Conditions: Work indoors is performed in areas which normally have adequate heat, light, and ventilation. He/she is exposed to vibration from heavy equipment and to skin irritations from strong cleaning solutions used in cleaning toilets, urinals, etc. Care is required to avoid serious injuries when working on ladders and scaffolds and when using heavy powered equipment. At risk for infectious diseases. Operates vehicles in all kinds of weather in a controlled traffic environment throughout the park. Exposed to dirt and fumes, and to the possibility of cuts, bruises, and broken bones as a result of. accidents while driving or from falling objects when loading and unloading the vehicle. Is exposed to sun, rain, snow, high winds, and temperature ranging from -40 degrees to 90+ degrees F. Works at elevations ranging from 7500 ft. to 12500 ft.

Close to the California mainland, yet worlds apart, the park encompasses five of the eight California Channel Islands (Anacapa, Santa Cruz, Santa Rosa, San Miguel, and Santa Barbara) and their ocean environment, preserving and protecting a wealth of natural and cultural resources. The Channel Islands are home to over 2,000 plant and animal species, of which 145 are found nowhere else in the world.

Like the Galapagos Islands of South America, isolation has allowed evolution to proceed independently on the islands. Marine life ranges from microscopic plankton to the blue whale, the largest animal to live on Earth. Archeological and cultural resources span a period of more than 13,000 years of human habitation.

The protection of these fragile island resources was ensured when Congress, in the act that created Channel Islands National Park in 1980, established a long-term ecological monitoring program to gather information on the current health of resources and predict future conditions. This information provides park and natural resource managers with useful products for recreation planning, conservation and restoration programs, and early identification of critical issues.

The islands were set aside by Congress not only to preserve these resources, but also to provide for your enjoyment. If you visit the park, you will be one of a very select group. Few people actually see this park because it is not easy to get to-you can't drive to the islands. A short but exciting ocean voyage or a commercial flight in a small airplane is required. The park is one of the least visited of all of America's national parks. The relatively light visitation enhances the islands' feeling of solitude and assists in the protection of fragile resources. In establishing the park, Congress recognized the value of solitude by allowing for low intensity, limited entry visitation. So a visit to this national park will always provide a marked contrast to the bustle of southern California most people experience. It will always be a place where you can step back in time and experience coastal southern California the way it once was.

This position manages operations for Glacier Bay National Preserve and the Dry Bay Ranger Station and serves as the Federal Subsistence Coordinator. As a Park Ranger (P), major duties will include:

• Law Enforcement Operations: Detection, investigation, apprehension, and prosecution under applicable laws, rules, and regulations enacted to insure the protection and safe use of National Park resources.
• Public Use Management: Issue and oversee Special Use Permits, monitor permittee activities, educate, interpret, and inform permittees and visitors about resources, conservation, laws, and regulations.
• Subsistence Management: Serves at Subsistence Coordinator representing the NPS and Glacier Bay on management committees and with subsistence users.
• Supervision: Conducts all aspects of supervisory role - announcement, recruitment, hiring, performance evaluation, awards, discipline, and termination.
• Emergency Services: Responds to and/or manages emergency incidents to include law enforcement, medical/trauma, search and rescue, structure fire, wildland fire, vessel, vehicle, ORV, aviation accidents, or natural disasters.

In this position dangerous persons must be physically confronted, subdued, and apprehended, many of whom are known to carry weapons. Prisoners must be kept under physical restraint during transport and processing. Criminal investigations often must be carried out without regard to fixed work schedules, days off, or opportunities for proper rest or nutrition.


Work Environment: The work environment is field work with some office work in the summer and the opposite in the winter. Field work of the incumbent regularly includes long periods of standing, hiking and/or climbing, in many cases on uneven steep, rough, slippery, and/or rugged terrain. Strenuous exertion is frequently required in law enforcement, firefighting, search and rescue, and medical related emergency activities. Lifting or carrying equipment over 50 pounds such as firefighting or search and rescue equipment is required. In some situations, heavy packs may have to be carried long distances over uneven, unimproved surfaces, or snow-covered terrain.
The duties involve performing physically rigorous work in an isolated outdoor environment while exposed to severe weather conditions. Work may involve periodic exposure to high risks or discomforts such as low temperatures, high winds, adverse weather conditions, ocean water, falling limbs or trees, and similar situations. Incumbent may require special safety precautions, i.e., working around boats, aircraft, off road vehicles, moving parts, or machines; persons with contagious diseases or irritant chemicals, blood borne pathogens, dangerous animals, and substances, etc. Incumbent may be required to use protective clothing or gear such as masks, gowns, coats, boots, gloves, helmets, or shields. The work is performed at various hours of the day, and night and for prolonged periods during emergency situations. Shift work is often required.
The position the incumbent is frequently exposed to high-risk and potentially dangerous situations in law enforcement and emergency types of situations requiring use of a wide range of personal protective gear, some of which may be uncomfortable, hot, or inconvenient to wear, adherence to specific safety procedures, and other precautions.
The incumbent is required to operate motor vehicles, ATVs, UTVs, and motorized watercraft and will be required to fly in small fixed-wing and rotary aircraft.

• Utilizes FMSS and related software programs to compile, organize and track all data collected to support the Park's Asset Management Program.
• Collects and analyzes data from a variety of maintenance programs such as FMSS, Project Management Information System (PMIS), Administrative Finance System (AFS), and Planning, Environment, and Public Comment (PEPC).
• Works closely with project developers to prepare accurate work orders and cost estimates using the Cost Estimating Software System (CESS).
• Prepares, reviews, and evaluates reports prepared from computerized and manual data management programs.
• Establishes, maintains, and updates a computerized inventory of fixed property and schedules condition inspections.

Fort Laramie National Historic Site sits along the Laramie River at the confluence of the North Platte River in southeast Wyoming. The fort consists of 833 acres. The site was originally established in 1834 as a fur trading post and from 1849 until its abandonment in 1890 served as the largest military post on the Northern Great Plains. During that timeframe, successive waves of American Indians, trappers, traders, missionaries, emigrants, soldiers, miners, ranchers and homesteaders interacted with, and left their mark on a place which became famous in the history of America's westward expansion. Today, park visitors are immersed in the historic scene and complex history through a variety of experiences.

Fort Laramie National Historic Site was the most vital post of the westward movement in the 1800's. The site consists of 46 historic structures and 832 acres. The current staff has about 15 permanent employees plus 10-15 temporary summer employees. Fort Laramie National Historic Site is located in southeastern Wyoming, 3 miles west of the village of Fort Laramie, and 23 miles west of Torrington (the county seat, population 6,200. The small towns have post office facilities, stores, schools, and churches. In addition to these, Torrington has medical facilities, and a Junior College. We are also 50 miles west of Scottsbluff, NE; 100 miles north of Cheyenne, WY; and approximately 3 hours from Denver, CO.
