Purpose of the role

This role focuses on the efficient and measurable collection of customer accounts to maintain the company's cash flow.

An exciting opportunity has arisen to lead, develop and provide the day to day service of the established Pre-Operative Assessment clinic on the Bedford site. We are seeking a Band 6 Specialist Biomedical Scientist to join the Microbiology department at Bedford Hospital. The laboratory is equipped with a variety of equipment including the BioMerieux BacT/Alert Virtuo, BD MGIT, DS2, the BioMerieux Vidas, Biofire Torch and Film Array, Roche Cobas 6800, BD Max, Cepheid Gene Xpert, Beckman Coulter Microscan, Stratec Gemini and Bruker Maldi-TOF.

The laboratory has merged with the Luton Microbiology department and delivers a range of investigations to Bedford Hospital, Luton and Dunstable Hospital and the surrounding GPs. The department is UKAS accredited to ISO 15189:2012 and is an IBMS approved training laboratory.

You will work as part of the Microbiology team to provide a high level of microbiological analysis to provide patients with the highest level of diagnosis and treatment.

The post holder will work as a Specialist Biomedical Scientist performing a range of microbiological techniques to assist in the clinical diagnosis of microbiological disease in accordance with SOPs.

To meet requirements of a Band 6 you will need to be flexible in your approach, a good communicator, able to work as part of a team to tight deadlines and you will hold the nationally recognised ACC (Accreditation of Clinical Coders) qualification in clinical coding.

Candidates who currently do not meet the requirements of a band 6 may be considered for a developmental role at band 5 however you must have a track record of high quality coding, you will have a good knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy and physiology.

Able to demonstrate competence in the use of ICD10 and OPCS 4.9 classifications, complete coding rules and application of National Clinical Coding Standards across acute specialities is a prerequisite, excellent communication skills and progressing to a band 6 once ACC have been acquired.

The Clinical Coding Department is a pivotal Service within the Trust’s IM&T Division. The Department provides a wide range of services including Pulmonary Physiology, bronchoscopy and EBUS, Tuberculosis, Lung Cancer,Interstitial Lung Disease, Severe Asthma,Pulmonary Rehabilitation, Pleural, Full Sleep Medicine and Non-invasive ventilation. The appointee will join the existing consultants in providing a comprehensive respiratory medicine service and participate in an on-call rota for Respiratory Medicine non-invasive ventilation cover.

Key tasks;

· Maintenance of the highest clinical standards in the management of all patients presenting to the Hospital. This includes optimising safe and timely discharge of patients and supporting patient flow.



· To share, with colleagues in the Respiratory department the management of all adult patients with Respiratory disorders referred to the Trust. This is a pure Respiratory Medicine post but applicants will have the opportunity to discuss during the interview if they wish to contribute to the general medical rota.
