The role:

• Ensure designs are delivered within programme and within the budget provided;

National Highways have an exciting opportunity for a Senior Design Engineer to join our Developments team in the Midlands as part of our Operations Directorate.

This role will require providing an engineering opinion at planning application stage, with more thorough assessment/input being required following planning approval; whereby Technical Approval of the associated mitigation works will be required. Technical Approval follows a two part process.

You will be required to drive as part of your role, and you will need to have a full clean driving licence to be considered for this position

What you'll be leading on

• Technical Approval Part 1 - To confidently articulate with key stakeholders verbally whilst providing advice and direction to help shape the design from the technical compliance, buildability, durability and maintainability perspectives; but with due cognisance of the Construction (Design and Management) Regulations 2015;
• Technical Approval Part 2 - Produce meticulous, unambiguous written technical commentary against finalised detailed design proposals using the DMRB and MCHW, along with Statutory Instruments, advisory sources and other documentation as appropriate. Consideration again to be given to the buildability, maintainability and durability of permanent works proposals;
• Liaison with Operations "Engineering Team Managers" to discuss proposals from both the technical compliance and future maintenance perspectives and recording the opinions obtained;
• Liaison with other National Highways Directorates as and when required i.e. Safety Engineering and Standards;
• Developing and maintaining professional relationships with project promoters and their project team, whilst also managing expectations;
• Meeting with project promoters and/or project team members to discuss matters arising from the overall assessment process;

To be successful

• Higher Degree or Degree in Civil Engineering or other appropriate qualification associated with Highway Design;
• Professionally qualified to Chartered or Incorporated status with ICE or equivalent, or actively working towards;
• A demonstrable working knowledge of the current DMRB, the MCHW, CHE Memos, Statutory Instruments, British Standards, and the like;
• Experienced in the design and/or assessment of those individual elements which collectively form the Strategic Road Network;
• Considerable experience of working within a Civil Engineering and/or Highway Design environment..

- Assist the Design Manager to deliver high quality designs to budget and programme
- Prepare briefs/remits for design packages and for site investigation and survey packages
- Strike up good working relationships with external and internal design and construction teams to deliver integrated designs which are buildable and maintainable
- Review submissions as directed for quality and compliance with design standards
- Update design trackers on an ongoing basis
- Produce minutes and schedules for Design Review Meetings
- Assist the wider engineering team members as required with engineering input
- Able to communicate engineering ideas through sketching and drawing by hand and using CAD software
- Co-ordination / management abilities to deal with several small projects or large multi-disciplined projects
- Engineering design capability as pre-requisite for submission review and checking

Who we’re looking for

- Computer literate with strong skills in Microsoft Office and other design-based software such as AutoCad and ProjectWise
- HND or Engineering Degree qualified
- Flexibility and willingness to travel.

About the Project Severn Trent Water (STW) Capital Delivery Framework for the 7 successful LOT 1 Contractors comprises of a multidisciplinary programme of works covering
- Clean & Wastewater Treatment
- Infrastructure pipelines STW has received 'Fast Track' status from OFWAT and are thus 1 of 3 Water Utilities proceeding from 1 April 2020 with their AMP 7 Programme of works.
