• Preparing and delivering sanitizing bleach solution for use in classrooms, sanitizing toys that have been handled by children, replenishing classroom supplies when required, delivering program supplies and materials to classrooms, etc

Manages and directs the administrative activities of health care professionals who are responsible for the medical, dental and allied health services of the facility, and for overseeing the provision of the best possible patient care to the inmate population.

Health care services provided include inpatient and outpatient care in either an institution setting or at a local hospital, as well as routine health maintenance services, emergency services and chronic care of inmates with long term illnesses.

Serves as a cost center manager to prepare estimates and administer an annual budget. Manages a procurement system to provide adequate levels of medical, surgical, dental, and pharmaceutical supplies.

Provides administrative supervision to subordinate staff which may include an Assistant Health System Administrator, Pharmacist, Clinical Nurse, Medical Records Technician, Public Health Service (PHS) staff, contract staff, etc.

Establishes and maintains good relationships with local hospitals and other health service installations, representatives from colleges and universities, accrediting agencies and the community at large, for the purpose of promoting understanding of quality care and the health care delivery system.

Develops and coordinates internal review systems to assure compliance of the standards of the American Correctional Association (ACA) and Joint Commission standards, as well as other regulatory groups and higher agency authorities.

Implements the agency’s re-entry initiatives including timely Inmate Skills Assessment data entry at admission and evaluation of health status documented in an updated electronic exit summary at release.

Ensures the provision of release medications and electronic transmission of health records to community healthcare providers rendering continued medical or mental health care when applicable.

Has institutional oversight responsibility for insuring the legality and duration of confinement of commitments to the custody of the Attorney General.

Major Duties Include:

• Serves as the primary medical media coordinator for the medical center and resource advisor to other VA components using mastery of principle, methods, practices and techniques of using, applying, and adapting video, computer graphics, medical illustration, print media, medical photography, digital photography, electronic imaging, exhibits and displays from highly technical to highly simplified to train or educate a very specific or diverse medical audience.
• Establishes, directs and amends policies and procedures for Medical Media to ensure Medical Media and its components are consistent with Federal, Agency and Medical Center policies.

Actively participates in inmate program review meetings with other Unit Staff.

Serves as the unit expert and coordinator on matters pertaining to: (a) inmate personal property, including incoming and outgoing package approvals; and (b) trust fund activities, including inmate withdrawals and special purchase orders.

Coordinates any approvals/disapprovals to the inmates’ visiting lists, as well as, conducts the National Crime Investigation Center (NCIC) checks for those requesting placement on the lists.

The Patient Safety Manager (PSM) Registered Nurse (RN) executes the position responsibilities that demonstrate leadership; detailed planning; professional communication; creative and innovative approaches to the improvement of patient safety/healthcare program development; possess an ability to organize priorities; meet deadlines; provide in-person, telephonic and electronic professional presentations; demonstrate the ability to work independently. The PSM functions as the lead manager and implementer of patient safety policies and activities developed by the National Center for Patient Safety (NCPS) and is the facility's key person to help build and implement patient safety systems and promote the culture of safety within Veterans Affairs (VA) facilities and for VA patients in all healthcare settings. Direct support is provided to the development, maintenance, and operation of the VHA's patient safety process at the facility level. This includes working with all levels of staff within the facility, including top-level management, Root Cause Analysis (RCA) team members, RCA team leaders, and RCA recorders. Must have the attitude that building the culture of safety is paramount and the foundation upon which safe operations are based. Such a culture takes time to build and requires constant nurturing and reinforcement to maintain. The PSM collaborates with, trains, and directs patient safety activities of personnel within the facility, such as infection control professionals, risk managers and quality managers. Responsible for translating the policies, theories, and strategies into action within the complex interrelationships that exist related to patient safety. They have the primary responsibility for training and implementing patient safety and RCA process to clinicians, management, and all relevant support personnel within their facilities and associated facilities and operations (i.e., home care). The PSM is responsible for maintaining clear communication between the facility and NCPS, both to communicate relevant patient safety information and lessons learned from the facility which have potential impact beyond the local level and to understand changes at the national level in the Patient Safety Program. Performs duties directly contributing to the administrative management of a health care delivery system. Duties require the ability to apply the specialized principles and practices of health care management in directing or supporting a health care delivery system.
