Birch Wood Special School is seeking a dedicated Positive Behaviour for Learning Lead to support pupils facing social, emotional, and behavioural challenges. In this vital role, you will help students overcome barriers to learning, engage fully in lessons, and enhance their academic and pastoral progress. Responsibilities include promoting high expectations, developing targeted academic and mentoring programmes, and fostering inclusion for all students. You will work collaboratively with parents, staff, and external agencies to support pupils’ wellbeing, attendance, and successful transitions. Your ability to role model positive behaviour and effective communication will be crucial in creating a supportive environment. The successful candidate will be confident utilising data to identify trends and work strategically to support pupils. The role will be primarily based at Birch Wood Vale and Ashton House, a secondary provision for students with learning & cognition and communication & interaction needs.Birch Wood Area Special School is a dual site school with a strong vision for achieving the best outcomes possible for children with a range of special educational needs. At our Grange Drive site students range from early years to year 14 with special educational needs including learning and cognition needs (Moderate-Severe Learning Difficulties and Profound & Multiple Learning Difficulties). Students may have a diagnosis of Autism and or AHHD. Students have access to a range of specialist facilities in a positive, communication rich environment. Birch Wood Vale (BWV) is our 11-19 school for students with moderate learning and cognition difficulties and ASC. We also have a specialist Autism provision- Ashton House (AH), based at this site. BWV & AH caters for students who will eventually be capable of achieving entry level qualifications, full GCSEs or a range of vocational qualifications in a nurturing and supportive environment that is sensitive to their needs and aspirational for their futures. We provide a broad, enriched and expanding curriculum which is based on National Curriculum guidelines. Outcomes for all pupils are consistently high and we maintained an overall judgement of good as a result of our most recent Ofsted inspection in April 2024.Main purposeTo support pupils who are facing difficulties in school because of issues related to social, emotional, personal, behavioural problems or other factors. To help these pupils overcome their barriers to learning and fully engage with lessons to become more effective learners, and to improve academic and pastoral progress.Key Responsibilities Promote consistently high expectations of all pupils and make sure they’re making good progress by offering targeted academic and pastoral support Identify pupils or groups of pupils who are facing learning difficulties, and put initiatives in place to address the barriers to learning they’re experiencing Promote and support inclusion for all pupils, including those with special educational needs (SEN), English as an additional language (EAL) or with a physical disability Develop individual and group mentoring programmes, creating space for pupils to receive academic and personal support from staff and peers Role model good levels of literacy and numeracy, and encourage improvement in these areas among pupils who are struggling• For further information, please see supporting documents for the job description and person specification. Qualifications and Skills:GCSE or equivalent level, including at least a grade C/grade 4 in English and maths Strong listening skills and proven ability to deal with sensitive situations with integrity Proven ability to communicate effectively with adults and children, including through written and verbal communication Proven ability to create good relationships with pupils, staff and parents/carers A well-developed understanding of strategies to manage and support young people with challenging behaviour in a school environment Proven ability to tailor interventions to individual pupils Excellent understanding of safeguarding policies and procedures, and their role in child protection Proven ability to be flexible to changing workload demands and new challenges Ability to use IT systems and to conduct analysis and produce reportsWe can offer:A nurturing, caring and friendly environment Dynamic and energetic whole school team who work in partnership to support all children to succeed at our school Membership of Local Government Pension Scheme Staff parking available Health and wellbeing through our EAP
