About us

The National Science and Media Museum (NSMM) will be reopening in January 2025 as Bradford becomes UK City of Culture 2025. The museum temporarily closed in June 2023 to undergo a once-in-a-generation transformation with huge changes through a £6 million capital project called 'Sound and Vision', including two new permanent galleries, a new passenger lift and improvements to the main entrance, thanks to support from The National Lottery Heritage Fund.

To support our Operations teams in delivering a world-class welcome when we reopen, we are recruiting a full-time Duty Manager at NSMM on a permanent basis.

As Duty Manager, you will be responsible for the day-to-day running of the Museum, ensuring the health and safety of all our public spaces and supporting the front facing teams to deliver a high-quality visitor experience.

Working within a team of Duty Managers, you will be jointly responsible for the line management of our Visitor Experience team.

About the role

Leading by example, you will maintain the standards fitting for a national cultural site by conducting regular walk arounds, engage with staff and visitors, and use your problem-solving skills and flexible thinking to take control of incidents as they arise throughout the day. About you

Your new role
You will be part of a dynamic team of scientists, working collaboratively on a variety of R&D projects to further develop the company's technology, reporting into the senior leadership of the company.As part of the preclinical team, this role will work across in-vitro and in-vivo development, overseeing both in-house and outsourced work, eg at CRO or industry partners.
Joining as a senior member of the team you will have a strong input into both research strategy and technical work, with the potential to take on leadership/management of a small group of scientists for the right person. As this is a small biotech there is a strong bench work element to this role.
Major responsibilities will include (but are not limited to):

• Act as an expert - both in terms of technical input and wider scientific strategy - on biologics development for multiple therapy areas, including immunology, oncology and inflammation.
• Lead the set-up and development of in-vitro and in-vivo experiments, protocols and processes
• Investigate the mechanism of action of novel therapeutics using complex in vitro models
• Lead a team of biologists, providing scientific leadership and technical expertise across various assay systems from early discovery work through to translational
• Identify key areas for internal growth and external partnership and lead initiatives on this, eg hiring new staff
• Collaborate with internal teams, eg on process development and optimisation
• Manage external work done by CROs or collaborators/partners in academia or industry, including managing timelines and milestones
• Novel target identification across multiple diseases, coupled with the development of new approaches to further build the company's pipeline
• Biomarker discovery and development

What you'll need to succeed

• An advanced degree (PhD preferred) or equivalent experience in biology / immunology / biochemistry or a similar field
• Strong track record of developing and conducting both in-vitro and in-vivo projects for target ID and validation, preferably within the large molecule / biologics space (eg for antibody therapeutics)
• Significant experience with a variety of biochemical techniques and assays, ideally within a drug discovery environment, eg flow cytometry, immunoassays, cell based assays, microscopy, IHC, etc
• A deep knowledge of protein-based therapeutics, with experience of working on these across the entire discovery and early development/preclinical lifecycle a distinct advantage
• Experience working with CROs and/or managing external collaborations with partners in academia or industry
• Passion for the work and an aptitude for problem solving
• Strong communication skills, as you will be working closely in a tight-knit cross-functional team
• A flexible approach, with the ability to manage concurrent projects/workstreams with competing timelines

Experience of the following would be an advantage for this role but are not required:

• Supervising or managing staff (either direct line management or in a matrix set-up
• Exposure to supporting IND filings, eg by putting together relevant study documents
• Knowledge of ADME/Tox work

Are you an ambitious researcher looking for your next challenge? Do you have an established background in Structural Biology, particularly Cryo-Electron Microscopy (cryo-EM), NMR or HDX-MS? Do you want to further your career in one of the UKs leading research intensive Universities?

Based in the laboratories of Professor Alex Breeze and Dr Stephen Muench at the Astbury Centre for Structural Molecular Biology, you will work on an exciting project deciphering the chaperone interaction cycle of fibroblast growth factor receptors (FGFRs).

The project is funded for 9 months by the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC) and will involve solving high-resolution structures of complexes of FGFR intracellular domain with HSP90 and Cdc37 chaperone components using cryo-EM, as well as investigating dynamics and interaction epitopes using NMR spectroscopy and hydrogen-deuterium exchange (HDX-MS). Exceptional facilities and training are available in Leeds to support the project, including two Titan Krios electron microscopes equipped with the latest detectors as well as state-of-the-art cryoprobe-equipped NMR spectrometers including Bruker Avance III HD Aeon 950 MHz and Waters Synapt HDMS IM-MS, HDX and FPOP mass spectrometers.

You should have a PhD (or close to completion) in structural biology or a closely allied discipline, with experience in cryo-EM and potentially also NMR spectroscopy and/or structural MS, as well as protein expression, purification and labelling for the study of large proteins.

Key Responsibilities:

• Maintain a healthy and safe working environment, contributing to the review and monitoring of health and safety procedures.
• Provide technical advice and support to teaching staff, including trainee teachers, on health and safety matters.
• Ensure the safe disposal of hazardous materials and the safe treatment of used chemicals.
• Organise and maintain science equipment and chemicals, ensuring appropriate stock levels are maintained for lessons.
• Carry out routine maintenance, cleaning, and calibration of equipment, ensuring it meets the required standards.
• Assist in the preparation and setup of practical lessons, working closely with teaching staff to support lesson delivery.
• Support students and staff in practical lessons, including assisting non-specialists.
• Contribute to the design and development of specialist resources and long-term science projects.
• Maintain tidiness and organisation of science labs and classrooms after lessons.
