This medical retina clinical and research fellowship in Moorfields offers a unique experience for aspiring medical retina specialists to obtain the experience and knowledge in managing complex medical retina, genetics and uveitis cases essential for taking up a future consultant post. University College London Hospitals (UCLH) undertakes world-class research across many specialities including early phase, cancer, haematology, and neurology. As a senior research pharmacy technician (or Science Manufacturing Technician) you will be part of the pharmacy clinical trials team facilitating this research. Your key role is to set up new studies, maintain current and historical studies, and oversee the storage and receipt of clinical trials medicines. You will also be an important part of the team providing a high-quality dispensary service to our patients.


The postholder will acquire a broad overview of injectable research medicines, research delivery, dispensary management, and research governance, therefore would suit anyone with an interest in these areas. Prior experience of clinical trials or hospital pharmacy is desirable but not required.

Ideally you will be a GPhC registered pharmacy technician with 1-2 years’ experience although all training and support will be provided by our supportive team including our education & training lead. Those wishing to enrol on formal training courses can do so via external (on application) and in-house learning & development programmes.

The post holder will work closely with the principal investigator, clinical and research teams to co-ordinate and deliver research within the Paediatric Clinical Trials unit, NIHR Biomedical Research Centre at Moorfields Eye Hospital. The post holder will deliver a high standard of clinical care and be able to work as an independent autonomous practitioner. Research specific duties, include: To be responsible for co-ordinating and delivering research trial within the Paediatric Clinical Trials unit, NIHR Biomedical Research Centre at Moorfields Eye Hospital and UCL Institute of Ophthalmology. Undertake the screening, identification and recruitment of eligible participants to relevant trials according to trial protocol and organisation SOPs. Provide relevant information to prospective participants and taking of informed consent (and assent where appropriate). Deliver a high standard of clinical care, while adhering to research protocol, for all patients eligible for and recruited to clinical trials. Adhere to the principles of Good Clinical Practice (GCP). Manage the clinical trial documentation including maintenance of site file(s). Provide orthoptic support, where necessary, to clinical trials within Moorfields Clinical Research Facility. Act as research contact regarding paediatric clinical trials for both patients and the wider clinical team. Maintain good and open communication with the clinical team to facilitate the identification and recruitment of potentially eligible participants. Maintain accurate and detailed record keeping in format adhering to trial protocol and local SOPs. Present research findings at relevant scientific meetings. Provide orthoptic input to the development of protocols and grant applications. Network with other researchers and build collaboration. Facilitate effective communication or research study information with all relevant research team. Have a high level of computer literacy and basic programming. Support orthoptists and other members of the clinical team in their roles in clinical research studies. Support and encouraging engagement with clinical research. Provide discharge and follow-up advice.

This is an exciting opportunity for a driven and motivated individual to join the Orthopaedic Research team. At Barts Health we pride ourselves in delivering the latest in evidence-based healthcare. We are looking for an experienced, dynamic individual to join the Orthopaedic Research team at Barts Health.Applicants ideally will have an AHP or nursing background in Musculoskeletal AND/OR orthopaedics and should be willing to help our team to work with other hospitals both nationally and internationally to develop and deliver research into the latest practice in Musculoskeletal/Orthopaedic Medicine. The post-holder will be a senior member of the Orthopaedic research team and will be responsible for the operational management of the Orthopaedic research office.The post-holder will be joining a team that is well established and has national recognition for research excellence.

The role will involve close working with the academic group Barts Bone & Joint Health within Queen Mary University.The post-holder will ensure there are systems in place for accurate and timely research project notification and approval and that all such projects meet all the necessary research governance and regulatory requirements required for the Trust to either sponsor or host them. The chosen individual will liaise with finance colleagues to ensure that projects are accurately costed and work closely with the staff of the Joint Research & Development Office for Barts Health NHS Trust and Barts and The London School of Medicine and Dentistry.

The post holder will collaborate with key personnel to conduct in-house, national and international phase clinical trials and audit and will have managerial responsibility for research physiotherapists across the three orthopaedic departments of the combined trust. The post holder will work and provide guidance to colleagues working in a similar capacity in other trusts and will aim to develop relationships with academic institutions, industry and other specialities to develop research protocols and assist in the delivery at a Trust level. The post holder will assist in strategic development for portfolio research in central and east London but particularly at Barts Health.
