Senior Research Technician

The School of Earth and Environmental Sciences is seeking to appoint an enthusiastic and experienced technician to cover a period of maternity leave for 12 months, predominantly to support our Palaeoclimate, Image and Geochemistry research laboratories.

You will be responsible for:
the operational management of these research lab areas- carrying out lab inductions, training staff and students in technical and clean lab procedures, maintaining stock levels, servicing, and operating analytical equipment; overseeing lab safety, assessing risk, and encouraging sustainable lab practices.
carrying out analytical work to support academic researchers, e.g. conducting palaeoclimate multi-proxy analysis using light microscopy (preparing ocean sediment samples for stable isotope and trace metal analysis), Coulter Counter (for grain size analysis) and maintaining data and archive records.
Experience in working in a research laboratory is essential.

The successful candidate will also work as part of a friendly and supportive team of technicians, supporting the wider Schools Research Facilities, carrying out PAT testing, Legionella control and safety inspections. We will provide any relevant training and support that you may require.

Within the new NHS Wales Executive (the Executive), newly configured National Strategic Clinical Networks are a key component of the National Clinical Framework (NCF) model. National Strategic Clinical Networks perform the central role of the knowledge-to-practice element in the Learning Health and Care System laid out in the National Clinical Framework. Their position within the Executive enables them to play a role in fulfilling the expectations set out in the Executives Mandate and Remit Letter. National Strategic Clinical Networks replace both the former national clinical networks and major conditions implementation groups that transitioned into the Executive. They also cover some areas that have never benefited from networks or implementation groups. This model of delivery for clinical services is one of the most important facets of health service delivery and by bringing clinical communities together, it has been shown that it is possible to develop national consensus on the transformation of specific services. By working in this way, important challenges are identified, the best solutions are developed and the whole system, local and national, pulls in the same direction and shares in the benefits. This approach results in large scale, strategic changes rather than isolated reforms that fail to spread and lead to ever greater unwarranted variation in care. This requires clinical leadership to realise the opportunities for cancer and to embed across the NHS in Wales. The Research and Innovation Clinical Lead for the Cancer Network will need to be credible, supporting the National Clinical lead for cancer in the research and innovation aspects of a complex range of issues across professions and sectors. They will need to demonstrate they have experience of leading system and organisational/service change and knowledge of the complex landscape of NHS research or innovation. Working in close partnership with a managerial lead they will need to communicate clearly and effectively with a diverse range of stakeholders ranging from very senior government officials, NHS Wales leadership community, NHS staff and wider stakeholders including third sector organisations, industry and academia.

Describe and explain complex trials information in both written and oral forms to both patients and their carers. Coordinate and manage IG operations in support of research, keeping the Head of IG, the Director for Research, and the Chief Operating Officer for INSIGHT apprised of outcomes and escalating issues as appropriate. Provide expert and specialist IG advice and expertise on health research and related data access initiatives, developing high-quality, user-friendly and accurate guidance in a range of formats.
