We are looking for a Science Technician to join our highly successful team where student outcomes are paramount. Working in the Science Prep room you will provide apparatus and materials for teaching staff to enable them to deliver Science lessons

Applications are invited for a Clinical Research Fellow Higher (ST3-5) in Cancer Trials with Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust available from 18 July 2024 for 12 months.

This is an exciting opportunity for a Physician wanting to develop their career and gain experience as a Clinical Researcher within the Cancer Directorate at CUH.

This post may be suitable for Trainees, either before or after specialist Oncology training (or equivalent) and appropriate training, according to the level of the appointee’s experience, will be offered, and monitored by a named Senior Supervisor. A knowledge of clinical trial delivery and Good Clinical Practice (GCP), relating to trials would be an advantage.

The successful applicant will work in close collaboration with Senior Investigators and research staff in the day-to-day care and management of patients on trials, receiving experimental treatment both in early and late phase settings.

This post will offer the opportunity for training in all aspects of trial delivery from conception through to completion. The appointee will attend research-orientated outpatient clinics, participating in multidisciplinary teams for the management of solid and haematological cancers. Direct participation in research and audit projects is strongly encouraged.

The successful candidate will have some experience in Oncology, combined with a desire to enhance their knowledge and skills in relation to the conduct of clinical trials in patients with cancer.

Full Registration and a Licence to Practice with the General Medical Council at time of application.

The applicant must have demonstrable skills in listening, reading, writing and speaking in English that enable effective communication about medical topics with patients and colleagues, as set out in the GMC’s Good Medical Practice (2013). Non-UK applicants must possess the IELTS/OET exam before obtaining a GMC licence to practice.

To work with the clinical teams to map the patient pathway for each trial. Some skills include but are not limited to performing ECGs, physical examination and phlebotomy and associated processing. To perform venepuncture, process blood samples, ensure safe and appropriate storage of specimens as outlined in study protocol. To assist with other relevant investigations (including brain imaging and lumbar punctures) and process samples as required. To maintain accurate patient records to the highest standard and ensure all relevant information is documented within the patients medical notes.

The overall balance of research and clinical time commitment to the post, will be 50:50 pro rata but this may be split differentially during the time course of the post. Clinical shifts are each 12.5 hrs and will be a mixture of daytime, nights and weekend cover. The Cambridge Newborn Research Team lead by Dr K Beardsall is based at The Rosie Hospital, and within the University Academic Department of Paediatrics. It supports a wide range of research into the monitoring and management of newborn infants and the impact on long term health. Research themes include i. The role of continuous glucose monitoring in infants at risk of dysglycemia, ii. Lipidomics, iii. Alternative monitoring strategies including wireless and non-contact monitoring.
