Collections Care Assistant

About us
At National Railway Museum the historic site is changing, a multi-million-pound programme of construction and restoration projects is transforming and modernising the museum, with new buildings, galleries, visitor attractions, outdoor spaces and vital conservation work.
We are now recruiting for a Collections Care Assistant to join the team on a fixed-term contract until March 2025. This role is full-time, working 35 hours per week, on-site at the National Railway Museum in York.
About the role
As Collections Care Assistant you will work within our Collections Care team during this busy and exciting time for the museum. You will be involved in a wide variety of conservation and collections care activities including assisting with environmental monitoring and conservation cleaning of the collections.
You will assist in the condition reporting, care, data management and recording, assist with the changeover of exhibitions, cleaning and packing of objects from the collection stores and on gallery.
You will work closely with the other members of the Conservation & Collections Care team, supporting the work of the Conservation team, and more widely the work of the Documentation, Registration, Photography and Curatorial teams.
You will undertake conservation object cleaning of collection items where appropriate. You will ensure that these tasks are carried out in a safe and secure manner to comply with current legislation and following best professional practice.
About you
Joining us you will have good knowledge or practical experience of working with historic collections coupled with an understanding of collections care, particularly object handling. You will have good communication skills which will enable you to work well as part of a team.
You will be able to work well under pressure and use prioritising skills to meet deadlines calmly and effectively. Crucially you will have the ability to work to a high standard of accuracy with good attention to detail.
