Calderdale is a beautiful metropolitan borough in West Yorkshire, at the heart of the Yorkshire Pennines, between Manchester and Leeds, consisting of 140 square miles in area, boasting inspiring countryside, bustling communities, and a friendly atmosphere. Its spectacular natural landscape, vibrant towns, quirky culture, tremendous architecture, thriving businesses and kindness of community spirit make it a great place to live, work and visit. It has a fabulously rich heritage – it’s home to over 4000 listed buildings – and a really exciting future, with regeneration investment in Halifax town centre alone estimated around £100 million over the next few years. The Borough is at the forefront of entrainment culture as the home of BBC’s ‘Last Tango’, ‘Happy Valley’, ‘Gentleman Jack and Marvel’s ‘Secret Invasion’.
Calderdale Council is an ambitious unitary Metropolitan Council working to be the Best Borough in the North. Following internal promotions together with planned team growth, we are now looking to appoint three Senior Building Control Surveyors to help us to deliver a high-quality, effective, dynamic, forward thinking, and enthusiastic Building Control service across the borough.
Two of the positions are for ‘Senior Building Control Surveyors – Fire Safety’ and will spend a proportion of work time involved with corporate fire safety issues (including undertaking fire safety risk assessments) and supporting colleagues with our pan authority desire to ensure the provision of safe housing in the rented sector. The third role is a more traditional Senior Surveyor role, dealing with larger, more complex projects.
The successful candidates will be instrumental in helping the team deliver their services to a first-class standard. You must be forward thinking, able to engage and develop relationships with all customers, motivate others to aspire to compliance, be able to undertake all aspects of the building control process, which includes, plan vetting, site inspections, enforcement and dealing with dangerous buildings and structures; being responsible for a geographical area of the borough, whilst also managing and supervising other team players.
You will be expected to make complex and difficult decisions, dealing with larger or more complicated projects, at times working in challenging circumstances, both on site and in the workplace, whilst also mentoring and supporting other team members; enabling them to secure their futures within public sector Building Control.
Our surveyors are designated as ‘mobile’ workers, operating a mix of home, site and office working, finding time both to work independently and collaboratively with others.
Our Requirements:
• Corporate ‘Chartered’ membership of an appropriate professional surveying body.
• Demonstrable experience of working in Building Control, including fire safety knowledge and experience with commercial and more complex building types
• Have a current UK Driving Licence and have access to own vehicle.
• Excellent client facing, problem solving and relationship building skills.
• In depth knowledge of the Building Safety Act 2022, the Building Act 1984 and Building Regulations.
• Ability to effectively manage a varied and busy workload.
• Demonstrate an ability for supervising or managing staff.
• Working toward becoming a Registered Building Inspector.
In return we offer:
• A full induction and on-going training and development relevant to the role.
• Comprehensive reward and benefits package, which includes generous terms and conditions of employment.
• Enrolment into the Local Government Pension Scheme.
• A friendly, dynamic and supportive team.
