About the Role
BMC Medicine is a flagship journal of BMC, publishing important advances in all areas of clinical and translational medicine and public health. The editorial team prides itself on providing an excellent service to authors, reviewers and readers.
We are seeking an Associate or Senior Editor to join the editorial team with a strong background in molecular biology/medicine with a preference for candidates with an interest in oncology or endocrinology. This is an exciting opportunity to contribute to the editorial mission of BMC Medicine, and to work as part of a dynamic team of editors who handle original research papers, including manuscript selection, commissioning content and travelling internationally to promote the journal.
This is a dynamic and varied role that will give you the opportunity to see content across a broad range of topics and contribute to the success of BMC as a whole. This role is offered on a full-time permanent basis and can be located in our Beijing, London or Shanghai office (hybrid working model).
Role Responsibilities:
• Oversee the content published in BMC Medicine, primarily by handling individual submissions but also by advising on content handled by editorial board members, assessing their relevance to the journal and selecting peer reviewers as directed by the Chief Editor.
• Work closely with other editors on all aspects of the editorial process, including identifying peer reviewers and managing the peer review process
• Support the investigation and resolution of publishing or research ethics cases.
• Contribute to the journal strategy and policies
• Commission and edit content such as Reviews, Opinions and Research Highlights
• Attend conferences and carrying out institute visits to represent the journal
• Ensure that appropriate editorial standards are upheld.
• Build excellent communications and relationships with Editorial Board Members and authors.
• Ensure that all members of the Editorial Board are fully aware of the ethos and editorial policies of the journal and have all necessary training and information to perform their roles.
Experience, Skills & Qualifications:
• Educated to PhD or MD level (or equivalent) in molecular biology/medicine with a preference for candidates with an interest in oncology or endocrinology
• Broad scientific interests in areas within and beyond your specialty
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work cooperatively with colleagues at all levels
• Ability to critically assess manuscripts across a range of topics for novelty, scientific content, and their implications
• Excellent time management and prioritization skills, able to balance short-term deadlines with long-term goals
• Self-starter with a positive, can-do approach to problem-solving
• Willing to travel occasionally and represent BioMed Central at external events
• Previous solid editorial experience is needed to be considered for the Senior Editor level
