What the role is
The Environmental Monitoring & Modelling Division (EMMD) puts in place and manages a comprehensive air and water quality monitoring programme to ensure that effective monitoring of the air and water quality and enable policies to be formulated to improve air and water quality.
You will be part of the Modelling and Research team within the Modelling and Instrumentation Department (MID) under the EMMD, and be responsible for carrying out air dispersion and water quality modelling studies to assess and quantify the impact of policies and developmental projects on air and water quality. The team also carries out air and water quality research projects and data analysis to better understand air and water quality issues in Singapore.
What you will be working on
As part of the team, you will be responsible for the following: (i) Run simulations on air and water quality dispersion models to assess impact of new developments, track impact of pollution incidents, and identify sources of pollution, to support NEA’s policies and operations; (ii) conduct air and water quality research to provide insights on air and water quality issues in Singapore and provide recommendations to solve these issues.
In addition, you will cover the following:
- Customise and validate off-the-shelf dispersion models to support air and water quality assessments
- Develop and enhance dispersion modelling systems including an air and water quality forecasting system for Singapore. This could involve working with external agencies or appointed vendors
- Analyse and assess trends of air and water quality data using advanced data analytics
- Carry out data analysis using statistical tools, e.g. SPSS, etc, to assess possible impact of air and water quality due to related effects arising from climate change, and/or other factors
- Evaluate the methodology, risk impact assessment matrix, and air and water quality impacts for development projects, and where necessary conduct independent modelling runs to validate the impact assessments
- Collaborate with research institutions and internal stakeholders on scoping, planning and conduct of research studies
- Keep abreast with the latest developments in air and water quality modelling and research
- Carry out and manage research projects on understanding the sources, characteristics and environmental chemistry of air and water pollutants
- Work with local and international institutes and cultivate relevant research partnerships
- Perform procurement, finance and admin duties related to the various work items and/or projects
- Carry out presentations, prepare submissions and participate in various projects
What we are looking for
- Degree in Geography, Environmental Science, Earth System Science, Physics, or Chemistry
- Some knowledge in air and water quality, dispersion modelling software, GIS, data analytics, and/or statistics (e.g. SPSS) would be an advantage
- Demonstrate critical and analytical thinking and ability to articulate views clearly
- Driven, self-motivated and resourceful
- Demonstrate ability to undertake work both individually and part of a team
- Good command of spoken and written English
