The Design and Technology department at Torquay Boys’ Grammar School is a well-resourced and modern department. It comprises 3, fully-equipped teaching areas, a new food room, 2 computer suites incorporating 2 laser cutters, and a technicians’ room. There is a dedicated sixth-form engineering area that contains CNC machines and a 3D printer.

Staff currently deliver the full D&T curriculum to all year groups and are adaptable to cover all aspects of the syllabus.

Students have the opportunity to study a rich and challenging curriculum where they experience first-hand a range of techniques and processes through a series of design-and-make units. Digital technology is a key element in many of the units utilising CAD CAM to design, develop and manufacture as well as incorporating embedded micro controllers.

At KS3, the curriculum helps prepare students to be independent, critical thinkers who can adapt their knowledge and understanding to different design situations. There is a healthy uptake for GCSE Design and Technology (OCR J310) where students engage in challenging systems-based project work. Pupils can progress further and take A-level D&T (OCR Design Engineering H404 or Product Design H406). Throughout this course, students are given opportunities to become more independent learners to prepare them for their ongoing careers. The school is affiliated with Arkwright Engineering Scholarships programme and all Technology students in year 11 are encouraged to apply for this prestigious award.

The department has links with local high-tech industries and has played a leading role in developing schemes and resources in partnership with the Torbay Development Agency and the Hi-Tech Forum for other schools in the area. It has also participated in competitive activities such as the Green Power Challenge, Student Robotics, Bloodhound Model Rocket Car Challenge and British Schools Karting Championship.

You may also deliver or support delivery of learning for the vocational aspects of the curriculum across 2 sites.

As a lecturer, you will provide pastoral and academic support for disengaged students to enable them to engage positively in programmes of learning, participating in meetings relating to additional support and referring and signposting students to additional support where required.

The successful candidate will have relevant teaching experience/qualifications in delivering subject area. You should have experience of teaching/tutoring groups and 1:1. The key purpose of this role is to deliver safe and efficient Technical Management locally, to the Defence Marine Services contract, ensuring full compliance from both regulatory and contractual perspectives. This role will have responsibility for the management of the devolved port technical budget and will oversee the local technical team whilst leading and providing professional technical expertise to the regional Engineering team to ensure contract delivery as required by contract business plans.
Main Accountabilities:
Strategy and Plans



- Developing, agreeing, and managing robust technical business plans and budgets for the local Marine Services’ contract.
- Ensuring Contract Managers are appropriately supported to provide full service delivery.
- Technical compliance with Flag and Class requirements.
- Continually monitoring business plans, financial plans and targets taking appropriate action to ensure technical targets are met, including submitting accurate and timely reports.
- Driving operational efficiency, technical and assurance continuous improvements and engineering best practice across the contract.
- Identifying, developing and implementing strategy and plans for the effective management of technical risks taking into account latest regulatory requirements (e.g. MCA, HSE).
- Provision of technical input to organic growth initiatives.


Operational Excellence


- Acting as the marine business point of contact with Serco Procurement to advise and recommend, where appropriate, optimum suppliers.
- Advising local and regional teams on development and adaptation of technical Operating Procedures for the SMS.
- As required, taking the lead for technical and other maritime related investigations.
- To design and implement change strategies aimed at cost saving and efficiency across the regional activity, communicating with Port Contract Managers.

People and Organisation



- Line management of the local technical team as required providing leadership to ensure that all staff understand and deliver the contract in accordance with the business strategy and plans and are motivated to undertake their objectives whilst promoting a safe culture and attitude of continuous improvement.
- Ensuring all direct reports and staff understand their role and objectives, ensuring their performance and contribution enhances service delivery and develops a team culture.
- Assisting in the recruitment, training and professional management all staff within technical teams, thereby ensuring continuity of service, and promoting a safe working culture providing service excellence.
- Ensuring that at all times activities are undertaken in a safe environment and are fully compliant with MCA, Class, Health and Safety, ISM ISPS codes and any other legal requirements that may be applicable to the contract.
- Promote and foster good working relationships with all employee representatives


Growth and Financials



- In line with business plans and procedures, develop annual budgets and implement effective management and financial control of all technical expenditure whilst ensuring services levels are delivered safely and in compliance with the contract, Flag and Class.
- To identify and report any areas where economies of scale and cost saving measures may be used without detriment to safety or levels of service.
- To identify opportunities for growth, working with the port CM to support achievement of the growth aspirations of the contract and/or division.


What you’ll need to do the role:
Essential Qualifications:


- Qualified to Class 1 Motor (Unlimited) Certificate of Competency.
- Project and programme management expertise.


Essential Skills and knowledge:



- Detailed knowledge and experience of requirements covered by ISM.
- A sound understanding of Class & Flag Rules & Regulations
- Detailed knowledge and familiarity with ISO 9001 and 14000
- Experience in the use of IT systems and MS Office suite.

Essential Experience:



- Extensive experience as sea-going Chief Engineer.
- Substantial vessel refit experience and knowledge. Both prepping for, and seeing through.
- Experience of successful people management and team development.
- Commercial acumen.
- Budgetary management experience.
- Although not essential; Experience of operating successfully within both MOD and Commercial environments.

Carrying out EICR check for social housing clients
Repairing and replacing electrical fittings
Diagnosing and rectifying electrical faults

What we are looking for in our ideal Testing Electrician:

Competent in all aspects of electrical discipline, have testing/ completing certification experience, owning a full set of tools and will ideally have experience of working within a social housing environment. Qualifications required the current version of BS7671 (18th edition) NVQ 3 and Testing and Inspection 2391 or Equivalent. Driving Licence essential. Have Inspection and testing experience and ability to complete EICRs
