An exciting opportunity has arisen for an Operational manager providing strategic and clinical leadership to our small, friendly Medical Illustration Team. We looking to recruit an enthusiastic, self-reliant individual who can lead the team to maintain a high level of service delivery, with a patient-centred approach to provide a cost effective and efficient service.
We are a primarily oncology related service, covering colorectal, urology, gynaecology, plastic and reconstructive surgery. The department participates in national and international trials/studies, you will be responsible for approval and implementation of the study protocols which require clinical photography input.
The post holder will need to be a qualified, registered healthcare professional working in Medical Illustration/Clinical Photography/ Videography. Be currently involved in a range of supervisory or managerial duties providing Medical Illustration Services.
Management of the team will include recruitment, retention, staff training and development, delivering and monitoring service activity.
The post holder will be responsible for managing and planning for the service, traditional clinical photography/video in theatres, wards, clinics and the medical illustration studio.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Service Delivery
· To lead, manage and develop clinical photography services.
· To prioritise the photographic work of the department and ensure it is carried out in a timely manner, encouraging the highest level of personal & professional standards.
· To be responsible for the development of the service to accord with the service needs of the trust. To liaise with Clinicians and other health professionals/managers to achieve best service delivery.
· To be responsible for Data management and uploading procedure carried out by the administration staff in line with information governance and data storage. To liaise with I.T and the Information governance team where necessary.
· To be responsible for the implementation and monitoring of staff training.
· Utilise appropriate methods of communication and contact with staff, to ensure effective communication of departmental, divisional & Trust matters and that there is a satisfactory system in place for their views to be reflected back to the division.
· To be responsible for the technical performance, management of the department and development of the service to the highest standards of performance and organisational efficiency.
· To undertake a system of staff appraisal in line with Trust recommendations and ensure a programme of staff development, including Personal Development plans is in place for all staff in the department. To undertake recruitment and selection as necessary. Undertake disciplinary procedures and manage the annual leave procedure, use and entitlement. Also authorise Travel reimbursements.
· To review skills and abilities of all department staff and make recommendations to the directorate manager on the optimisation of skill mix and multi-skilling.
· To supervise and promote safe working practices and maintain, update and ensure compliance with Health & Safety policies in relation to procedures, equipment and materials used within the department.
· To be responsible for maintaining consumable stock in the department, researching best value for money.
· To undertake and supervise audits where necessary within the department.
· Assist clinicians and researchers in R&D where clinical imaging is an important element.
· To create and Review Photography policies, guidelines and SOPs.
· To liaise with CMPE management with regard to control and expenditure of department budget.
Clinical and Technical
· To provide specialist advice to clinicians on image management
· To participate in the needs of the service as required.
· Responsible for servicing and maintenance of equipment in the department.
· Undertake photographic of patients in the department studio, onwards, clinics, operating theatres, post-mortem room etc.
· To generate information using complex software systems. To maintain and update patient’s records, print clinical photographs etc., and prepare presentations for clinicians.
· To act with empathy, understanding, tact when dealing with young, elderly confused and terminally ill patients.
· Photography may require a photographer to adopt awkward working positions. Exposure to body fluids likely may be required to remove dressings prior to photography.
· Ensure that department staff are aware of infection control measures when undertaking photography on the wards and theatres.
· To maintain teamwork and to develop staff skills and skill mix.
· To analyse situations and use experience and skills to compare the options available when photographing different conditions. Patients may have “hidden” conditions that need to be taken into account.
· To liaise with the CMPE management and finance partners when developing new business cases.
Professional
· Keep up to date with all relevant Medical Imaging issues.
· To research advances in the profession, using professional judgement to apply and develop methods which are based on required operational procedures, with emphasis on cost implications of introducing new technology and changing work practices.
· To attend meetings at other Trusts to develop a support network and to share best practice with other managers within the profession.
· Responsible for the developing and implementation of departmental policies and protocols and ensuring the delivery of relevant training as necessary.
· To respect patients’ privacy and dignity whilst undertaking the photography, using concise instructions and persuasive skills to gain co-operation when patients may be need to be positioned correctly and required to remove some or all items of clothing.
· To conduct trials on new equipment where appropriate to analyse new equipment before purchase and implementation in the department.
· To be responsible for assessing own training needs and undertake continual professional development.
· Responsible for implementing local and national policies e.g. Health and Safety confidentially, patient consent etc. Follow all Caldicott guidelines for patient confidentiality and data protection.
· Communicate concise instructions to patients regarding correct positions for clinical photography using tact and diplomacy in difficult situations (patients may be required to remove several or all items of clothing).
Administrative
· Responsible for income generation in the department including development of new service areas. Liaising with senior management with regard to control and expenditure of the department budget.
· Maintains the clinical data base and make any amendments when necessary.
· To ensure the effective use of all resources and to ensure that any agreed budgets are kept within specified financial limits and operate within approved financial policies.
· Maintains suitable stock levels of consumables and researching best value for money.
· Day to day Management of staff in the department, including prioritising work load, undertaking appraisals, setting Personal Development Plans, training, recruitment/selection and disciplinary matters.
· Responsible for the day to day running of the departments and service delivery.
· Ability to analyse complex problems whilst working under pressure and find appropriate solutions to ensure service delivery is maintained.
· Overall responsibility for vacancy / talent management, ensuring all vacancies are recruited to in a timely manner and in line with the our recruitment and selection policy
