Joining the Allied Health team at Katherine Hospital and the Big Rivers Region as the Pharmacy Services Manager, offers a fulfilling opportunity to make a real impact on patients' lives, particularly within Indigenous communities. You will manage, lead, and develop the pharmacy services to ensure high-quality, culturally appropriate, and effective pharmacy advisory and medicines distribution services. This role also involves providing professional leadership, supervision, mentorship, and consultancy services across the Katherine region, ensuring best practices in pharmacy care.

This role also allows for professional growth and participation in innovative regional health initiatives. The Top End of the Northern Territory offers diverse and exciting medicine, with presentations such as tropical medicine conditions not seen ‘down south’. The town of Katherine has a population of approximately 11,000 and services the Big Rivers Region, which has a population of around 22,000 and covers a geographical area larger than Victoria. Most people in the region outside of Katherine reside either in small remote communities, or on cattle stations. There is a large proportion of Indigenous patients, with Katherine town being at the junction of the Jawoyn, Wardaman, and Dagoman groups. Katherine also has a busy tourist season, and sees many travellers in the hospital throughout the Dry Season.

The Katherine region offers a multitude of outdoor, camping, fishing, four-wheel driving, hiking, and mountain biking activities. It is close to Kakadu and Litchfield National Parks, Katherine Gorge, and in relatively close proximity to other places such as the Kimberley, Gregory National Park, Mataranka hot springs, the Red Centre, and countless other bush camping sites. While offering these natural wonders, it is also only a 3 hour drive up the fully-sealed Stuart highway to the city of Darwin, which provides ample shopping and restaurant opportunities. The town has a young population, also being the service centre for the Tindal Airforce base – there are lots of cafes, playgrounds, a large pool, a library, multiple primary schools, and a two high schools.

There is opportunity to be able to make a huge difference to healthcare outcomes for patients in rural and remote areas. Our patients have a high burden of chronic disease with complex comorbidities, and this makes for challenging and rewarding medicine.

Alice Springs Hospital (ASH) is seeking motivated doctors for accredited General Medical Registrar positions for the second half of 2024 and 2025 intake. Come for 3 or 6 or 12 month rotation. We are also accredited for acute general medicine Advanced Training. ACCRM, GP, critical care trainees and other encouraged to apply. Minimum PGY3.

The medicine here is entirely unique, around 75% of inpatients are Indigenous - many from remote communities. Co-morbidities and social conditions can be complex and effective communication is essential. The catchment area is over a million square kilometres with a strong focus on Indigenous and remote health.

Alice Springs Hospital is a 183 bed teaching hospital with strong links to Tennant Creek Hospital, Royal Darwin Hospital, Royal Adelaide Hospital and Flinders Medical Centre with many visiting specialists from these hospitals.
The Department of Medicine staff consists of a mix of General Physicians and other Specialists, many with dual training. We have local cardiology, endocrinology, rheumatology, infectious diseases, palliative care, oncology, alcohol and other drugs, a large renal unit, gastroenterology and many regular visiting specialists. There is on site general surgery, orthopaedics, obstetrics, gynaecology, psychiatry, paediatrics, day procedures unit and an 11 bed ICU. There are four General Medical teams, a busy Outpatient Department and we provide outreach clinics to some of the most remote parts of Australia.

Alice Springs is the regional hub of Central Australia with an urban population of approximately 30,000 people. It is multicultural with well-established schools and amenities. Alice is bicycle-friendly - rarely taking more than 10 minutes to get anywhere. Out of town are places to camp under the stars, swim through gorges, explore rocky mountain ranges and hit world-class mountain bike trails.

Katherine Hospital (KH) provides essential medical services to an expansive region comparable in size to Victoria. KH is a rural hospital with 40 beds distributed across three wards— medical, paediatric/post-op, and obstetrics and gynaecology (O&G) wards as well as a medical day stay unit. The hospital boasts a dedicated team of Rural Generalists and maintains robust collaborative ties with various departments at our tertiary referral center, the Royal Darwin Hospital (RDH). For those interested in non-clinical aspects, there are opportunities for involvement in teaching medical students and junior doctors as well as the chance to contribute to specialized portfolios within the department.

For those wishing to work in the Emergency Department, there is varied and diverse medicine with approximately 16,000 presentations per year and a mix of adult and paediatric patients. The ED has a close relationship with Careflight retrieval service, and a developed teaching program for junior doctors. Senior Doctor colleagues in ED are a mix of FACEM and Rural Generalists.
For those wishing to work in remote General Practice, Katherine Hospital provides GP services to both Pine Creek and Numbulwar remote clinics, with outreach GP trips available to these clinics.
