This job presents an exciting opportunity for a dynamic and dedicated nurse to shape the development of new children’s healthcare technologies (HealthTech), ensuring that the voices of patients and families affected by congenital heart disease (CHD) are heard.


By working with patients, families, carers and staff, putting their experiences at the heart of this work, and promoting their needs to the HealthTech Research Centre (HRC, a new clinical-academic research initiative at our Trust – read more below), we can ensure that new technology is tailored to the children and young people who need it, acceptable to those who use it, and workable for the services that provide it.


Curating an unmet needs register


Engaging with the CHD networks served by Evelina London Children’s Hospital (ELCH) and Royal Brompton Hospital (RBH)and Harefield Hospital, the post holder will gather,characteriseand curate a register of unmet needs, providing a foundation on which new HealthTech can be researched,designedand developed.


Unmet needs might include: the challenges faced by patients andcarers,living with CHD; and the difficultiesencounteredby NHS staff in their ambition to deliver excellent, highlypersonalised, and inclusive care.

New submissions to the unmet needs register will be reviewed,consideredandprioritisedtwice a year, by a multidisciplinary panel of patientadvocate, clinical, academic and innovation experts.

Detailed job description


This post will sit within the clinical theme of the HealthTech Research Centre (HRC) dedicated to children’s HealthTech research. This is called “Congenital Heart Diseasesin Children –PaediatricTechnologies”.The theme aims to narrow the gap between the unmet health and care needs of children and families living with congenital heart disease, and the HealthTech researchers (including academic and industrial partners) who arebest-placedto develop innovative solutions.


The HRCPaediatricCardiology Nurse will play a key role in achieving the objectives of the HRC congenital cardiac diseases in children theme. They are responsiblefor providingindividual packages of work and service support to ensure project outputs are delivered effectively. They will havedutyof care in supporting children and their families throughout their participation in any project activity, acting as the participants’ advocate at all times.


The post holder will take a lead on specific projects or aspects of a project aimed atidentifying,validatingandprioritisingthe unmet needs of children and young people living with congenital heart disease, theirfamiliesand the NHS workforce responsible for their care. The HRCPaediatricCardiology Nurse will have responsibilityfor,day-to-day delivery and adjusting plans as required to ensure that risks and issues are mitigated.


The HRCPaediatricCardiology Nurse will coordinate and undertake efforts to better understand the unmet health and care needs experienced by individuals within the integrated care networks served by our hospitals (ELCH and RBH). Provided with tools for data collection,characterisationand storage, the post holder will engage patients,familiesand staff toidentifyunmet needs, supporting them to describe the challenges they face. This might be through direct, in-person conversation, presentation at network events, secondary interactions with staff, receiving electronic submissions or in response to promotional materials.


The post holder will join andorganisethePaediatricTechnologies HealthTech Research Panel (“the panel”), presenting the unmet needs they have found, supporting their promotion to the core HRC teams for research support.Where we are successful in gaining HRC support and are able to set up projects in response, the post holder will liaise with project teams, the panel, and academic and industrial partners.


It is expected that the specific projects managed by the post holder will change over time as the portfolio of work changes.





Main responsibilities


Project Management

• Actively gather unmet needs within a provided,computeriseddatabase, ensuring that as far as possible, records areaccurate,completeand current.

• Organisemeetings of thePaediatricTechnologies HealthTech Research Panel.


• Coordinate interactions between key stakeholder groups and thePaediatricTechnologies Panel.

• Liaise with the Core, Methodology and PPI teams of the HRC to share unmet needs and coordinate the support of projects in thePaediatricTechnologies portfolio.

• Interact with collaborative partners (including academic researchers and industrial developers) to understand and ensure effective HRC support.

• Support the development of project plans and the delivery of agreed milestones andobjectives.

• Provide project support to the individuals in the project team.

• Organiseproject meetings, ensuring that regular meetings areestablished, reports are produced anddisseminatedina timelyway and actions are followed up – adjusting plans to accommodate complex and changing priorities.

• Set up andmaintainrisk andissueslogs. Working closely with more seniorprojectleads tomonitorandaddressrisks and issue resolution to ensure projects deliver to time,qualityand cost.

• Lead service level workshops with admin,managementand clinical teams. Produce presentation material and follow up information to introduce change projects and delivery plans.

• Communicate information on the delivery progress of the project(s) to key stakeholders asrequired.

• Provide scheduled highlight and exception reports per project, tracking milestones, for circulation to more senior project leads

• Co-ordinate minutes, agendas and papers for distribution in preparation for meetings, ensuring this is done in a timely manner.

• Support evaluation and audit of projects across sites andorganisations.


Financial management

• Manage a delegated budget for own area of work to ensure best value for money, including signing off invoices,monitoringexpenditure and providing budgetary reports.

• Activelymonitorexpenditure against budget and address problems at an early stage.

• Support the commissioning and procurement of products, equipment, services, systems and facilities, as required for the delivery of the project.


Staff and stakeholder management

• Support engagement plans for project to proactively ensure that positive and effective relations are developed andmaintainedbetween members of the team, all stakeholders including children, young people and their families and key internal and external stakeholders throughout the project.

• Act as a participant advocate enabling patients and families to make informed choices concerning their involvement in the project and /or research studies, ensuring advice and information is provided.

• To communicate effectively with children, parents/carersand families, including the provision of ongoing information,educationand support.


• Report any health concerns which occur whilst the participant is taking part in the study to theappropriate clinicianin a timely manner, and to the relevant members of project team or investigators

• To maintain the child’s and family’s confidentiality and safety at all times.

• Respond to concerns raised by participants and visitors in a proactive manner and take remedial action as necessary.

• Ensure that nursing practicescomply withTrust policies and procedures

An exciting opportunity has arisen to join the Clinical nurse specialist team in Adult Congenital Heart Disease (ACHD) at the Royal Brompton Hospital.The post holder will join the existing ACHD clinical nurse specialist and work as a key member of a successful multidisciplinary team including cardiologists, cardiothoracic surgeons, physiologists and administrative staff. All team members are supported in their professional development and encouraged to take an active role in service development

The role will be based at Royal Brompton Hospital but with clinical work at taking place in outreach clinics within the network.

This role will primarily support the inpatient and outpatient service with nurse led clinics for the Adult Congenital Heart Disease service.

East Wing 10 HDU is a state-of-the-art, new and improved 15 bedded unit and we are looking for you!

We are looking for enthusiastic, experienced critical care nurses to join our friendly, welcoming team on this new venture to deliver high quality level 2 patient care. East Wing 10 HDU is an integral part of the large and dynamic Critical Care department at Guy’s & St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust (GSTT), caring for both surgical and medical patients. These are patients who have either been stepped down from Intensive Care, or those requiring a step up in care from ward level and the Emergency Department. These patients often require support of one or more organs, such as with non-invasive ventilation, renal replacement therapy and advanced cardiovascular support, all of which require close monitoring and observation.

The upgraded facilities and enhanced infection control measures will improve our ability to cater for the complex needs of critically ill patients. GSTT is committed to investing in our hospital environments so we can continue to improve care and patient experience. This is one of several capital projects undertaken at GSTT that will improve facilities for patients.

The Royal Brompton cystic fibrosis (CF) clinical trials department comprises of clinicians, academics, allied health professionals and admin/ finance members. The Brompton adult & paediatric CF centres are made up of world leading teams carrying out global, multicentre interventional and observational studies, in both adults and children, being led by Profs Davies, Simmonds and colleagues. The Brompton is the lead site for an early-phase, multicentre trial of CFTR gene therapy led globally by Prof Eric Alton; this post has been created primarily to support this trial, whilst also working alongside the team across the CF trials portfolio.

You will be responsible for all matters relating to data collection/management, involving direct patient interactions and provision of administrative support for trial-related activities for the gene therapy study. This role requires the post holder to be able to handle a varied/extensive workload. Training will be provided in all aspects of the role.

You will support the other research taking place within the CF trials department, based at the Royal Brompton campus, close to the vibrant King’s Road, Chelsea. You will be located in an office with a multidisciplinary clinical and research team allowing for networking/learning from other healthcare professionals. We are looking for a forward-thinking and motivated nurse to join the Neighbourhood Nursing teams across Lambeth and Southwark areas.

We are the first Trust in the UK to trial the Buurtzorg District Nursing Model: an entirely Nurse-led approach to patient care in the community with self-managed nursing teams. You will find yourself working in a completely different way.

You must demonstrate excellent communication and team working skills. Through clinical case management you will care for patients with long-term conditions, those at risk, end of life care needs, and those with supported self-care programmes.

There will be training and opportunities in addition to clinical supervisions and appraisals. The post holder must be able to undertake a prescribing course and advanced assessment courses once in post.

The successful candidate will play an active role in this busy and prestigious department, working across our Medical and Surgical wards. You will have strong experience in Sleep and ideally in Ventilation also. You will be actively involved in the team roster and have experience in the setting up/analyzing of diagnostic sleep studies (e.g-Respiratory Polygraphy and Full Polysomnography) and in implementing treatment with CPAP therapy and Noninvasive ventilation in the inpatient and outpatient setting. You will be directly involved in the training and support of junior staff running teaching sessions and facilitating competency requirements. The role will require you to participate in consultant lead CPAP and NIV clinics both face to face and virtual. You will also be actively involved with line managing and the appraising of junior staff . You will also be involved in the development of the service e.g - assisting with business case and Capital bid proposals, and will attend face to face or virtual meetings with other service managers and Clinical Lead.

You will be expected to participate in our on-call rota (phone support only) if you are working a late shift.

To be able to setup all home sleep diagnostic tests e.g - Respiratory polygraphy (+/- LMs), Home 02/C02, with a patient and follow up with a video call to facilitate the patient setting up the kit for an overnight test at home.

To be able to proficiently use and provide “telemonitoring” services currently in use amongst our CPAP/NIV patients

To assist in liaising with the incumbent service and maintenance contractors (currently Baywater) to resolve any day-to-day issues or problems related to Ventilator patients

Support children, young people and families with a new diagnosis – providing written and verbal information regarding their diagnosis, symptoms, management and treatment plan (short and long term).

Providing contact details for further support on discharge.

Seeing patients in a family clinic setting, liaising with genetic counselors, creating family trees. Knowledge of genetic inheritance, supported by the wider MDT.

Liaising with health visiting/midwifery/community nursing teams to ensure support and management plans are in place post discharge from the ward/PICU.

Discuss support needed at school and nursery, providing tailored written care plans for each individual patient.

Liaising with bedside nurse and education team about the potential need for basic life support training, depending on diagnosis.

Liaising with ward nursing team regarding psychological or social care support required ensuring that continuity is maintained on discharge. Maintaining communication with named member of psychology team, CAHMS, safeguarding and named social worker post discharge.

Liaise and communicate with hospital school for long term inpatients. Provide ad hoc teaching to bedside nurses when needed, signposting to written information when needed.

Review discharge plans with medical team/ward ANP and meet with patients prior to discharge to ensure appropriate support and follow up is in place.

Follow up therapeutic drug monitoring post discharge in community.

Post discharge telephone call to families to check on medications, patient symptoms, investigations, wound healing and outpatient appointments.

Support patients undergoing electrophysiology study (EPS), radiofrequency ablation (RFA), and permanent pacemaker (PPM) insertion. Ensuring clear documentation via EPIC for all patient interactions.

Offer support and verbal/written information to patients listed for EPS, RFA and PPM insertion/revision (in conjunction with cardiology/inherited cardiac conditions nursing team if shared patient) at time of review in consultant outpatient clinics.

Weekly reviews of post discharge ISLA wound images for post operative patients who have undergone PPM/ILR insertion.

Screening of consultant and nurse led clinics to ensure appropriate investigations are carried out and ensuring follow up is arranged in an appropriate time frame.

Offer further nursing care and education to patients seen in consultant led clinics that may need further information or support about their diagnosis and management.

Offering and requesting nurse led transition appointments for teenage patients who will soon be transferring to adult services.
Telephone consultations and remote patient support

Telephone support to parents via work mobile and office phones – this may involve managing symptoms/discussing new symptoms, being responsive to worries/concerns and advising accordingly, relaying the results of investigations (exercise tolerance tests, holter monitors, ECGs and cardiac MRIs), medication management and formulating and actioning management plans.

Telephone triage for patients with new or increased/worrying symptoms. Requesting appropriate investigations and following up results. Escalating and signposting where appropriate - 111/999, A&E or electrophysiology consultants, consultant nurse.

Coordinating AliveCor monitoring loaning and reviewing all AliveCor results from symptomatic patients in the community who are trying to document symptoms of arrhythmia. Discussing these results with the consultant team to ensure there is an appropriate management plan when necessary.

Review holter monitor results sent from local services and outreach clinics that are seen within shared teams in the network. Ensuring abnormalities are flagged to consultant team, making appropriate treatment and escalation plans where necessary.

Organise local investigations for families with local paediatricians, paediatricians with expertise in cardiology (PECs), GPs and health visiting/community teams.

Draft reports and attend child protection conferences and core group meetings organised by local social care / authorities.

Attend school visits as necessary.

Working closely with colleagues in the pacing department to co-ordinate remote downloads of patients PPMs/ICDs. To review with pacing team the results of routine remote downloads, as well as downloads at times of worrying symptoms – relaying these results to families.

Supporting patients with letters in relation to housing, government benefits, schooling and exams, travel – signposting when necessary.
