The Scottish Partnership in Energy and Engineering Research (SPEER) is a partnership of 14 Scottish Universities working collaboratively to maximise impact in energy and engineering research and innovation. SPEER works strategically with academia, industry and public sector/government to further build upon and grow Scotland’s energy and engineering research excellence to drive global competitiveness and socio-economic impact. SPEER has recently formed from the integration of two world-class pan-Scottish partnerships; the Scottish Research Partnership in Engineering (SRPe) (www.srpe.ac.uk) and the Energy Technology Partnership (ETP) (www.etp-scotland.ac.uk). The SPEER Engineering Pillar is managed in accordance with the SRPe approach, and the SPEER Energy Pillar in accordance with the ETP approach. Both Energy and Engineering pillars are focused around key themes.

The activities of the SPEER Energy Pillar are focused around a broad spectrum of low-carbon Energy Themes, aligning the research and innovation strengths of the Scottish universities with the key strategic opportunities for socio-economic impact and growth.

Based at the state-of-the-art Technology & Innovation Centre in Glasgow, the SPEER Deputy Director of Energy will be a high calibre versatile professional with a wide range of skills who can manage all aspects of SPEER strategic, operational and project delivery. You will work closely with the SPEER Executive Director and manage the day-to-day operational and project delivery of the wider SPEER team. Due to the integrated nature of the partnership, you will work closely with the SPEER Deputy Director (Engineering) to identify areas of synergy between the Engineering and Energy Strategies and develop joint initiatives. You will collaborate with a wide range of internal and external stakeholders from across a number of organisations spanning academia, industry and public sector, including at senior/executive level.

Your main activities and responsibilities will be across the full range of engineering focused SPEER activities, including management and oversight of partnership-wide SPEER funded initiatives and programmes; design, development and delivery of strategic investment cases, strategic initiatives/programmes, collaborative proposals and workshops; identifying and developing new collaborations with academia, industry and public sector, horizon scanning, identification and monitoring of collaborative funding opportunities; organisation and delivery of conferences, events and workshops; marketing and communications; management and coordination of early career researcher skills development/training initiatives; budget management and financial reporting; project delivery and progress tracking; development of databases, and day-to-day operational management and supervision of the SPEER executive office team.

To be considered for the role you must be educated to a minimum of degree level in a relevant discipline, or with equivalent relevant experience within the higher education, public or industry sectors. You will have extensive experience across stakeholder management, cross-sectoral collaborative strategic proposal / investment case development and workshop delivery, marketing and communications, conference and events management, strategic initiative and collaborative project development and delivery, project management and project performance monitoring, financial management and general operational delivery management and staff supervision, ideally within an industry facing higher education collaborative research environment.

In addition to having excellent interpersonal, organisational & planning, management, communication and IT skills, you must have the versatility and drive to embrace new challenges. Many aspects of delivery will be non-prescriptive and you must be able to operate proactively with a high degree of flexibility, and with a high level of motivation and personal initiative.

Overview
Transport Scotland is the national transport agency, seeking to deliver a safe, efficient, cost-effective and sustainable transport system for the benefit of the people of Scotland. Transport Scotland is accountable to Parliament and the public through Scottish Ministers, with a budget of around £3.5 billion per year. Transport is a vital feature of the Scottish Government's focus on increasing sustainable economic growth, and transport investments and policies have major impacts on our economy, environment, and society.

The Major Projects Directorate within Transport Scotland is responsible for the design, assessment, promotion, procurement and construction of major transport infrastructure projects included in the current Scottish Motorway and Trunk Road Programme and new projects emerging from the second Strategic Transport Projects Review (STPR2). The Directorate also leads and advises on procurement and contract management matters for Transport Scotland.

The Directorate is currently responsible for the delivery of a number of high profile and technically challenging programmes and projects including the A9 Dualling Perth to Inverness Programme, A83 Rest and Be Thankful, and improvements to the A96 between Inverness and Aberdeen. The Directorate is also involved in early development and business case work on Clyde Metro, Active Travel Infrastructure and Bus Priority on the Trunk Road Network.

The Roads Directorate is responsible for carrying out the management, maintenance and operation of the Trunk Roads in Scotland. The Trunk Road network comprises of around 3,500km of road and is the largest asset Scottish Ministers own (£21 billion net gross asset value). Other priorities include the co-ordination of response to emergencies affecting transport, roads policy, road safety including oversight of progress towards national casualty reduction targets, Intelligent Transport Systems and lighting, resilience, winter maintenance, transport planning of major events, roads and bridges design standards, and air quality and the environment including climate change adaptation and asset management.

In order to support our planned growth, we have a fantastic opportunity for a Technical Director to join our Fire Engineering Department within our Building Safety Business Unit. This role could be based from several of our key locations and can be worked flexibly with a mix of office and home-based working and the option to adjust start/finish times.

Our Fire Engineering teams provide clients with cost-effective and bespoke solutions for the full range of fire safety design in different sectors.

What does the role involve?

You will be working across a variety of projects as part of a wider team based in the UK with the opportunity to collaborate with other Sweco business areas and on international projects. This role will suit somebody with significant design consultancy experience and posessing a recognised fire safety engineering qualification with a recognised track record in delivery of projects from design through to construction and completion.

As part of this role, you will sit within a wider technical excellence team where the focus is on the technical oversight and delivery of projects, albeit candidates with strong business acumen and line management are welcomed.

The main responsibilities of the role include:

Developing Fire Safety Strategies during Design and Construction stages.
Preparing technical engineering analysis using relevant guidance documents and methods i.e. prescriptive and performance based.
Carrying out site visits when required.
Attending internal and external meetings.
Preparing fee proposals.
Supporting the team in developing technical knowledge.
Overseeing and managing projects from inception to completion.
Liaising with clients on a daily basis.
Reviewing and authorising work done by others.
To be successful in this role you’ll possess:

Experience working in a similar role with extensive experience in fire safety engineering.
A proven background in fire safety engineering with an excellent understanding of fire engineered solutions
Good problem solving/contingency planning skills with ability to find quick, innovative and practical solutions
Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to adapt your style to suit difference audiences.
Excellent consultancy, communication and relationship management skills.
Experience of delivering across a multi-site organisation.
A bachelor's or master's degree in Fire Engineering.
Full membership with the IFE (Institution of Fire Engineers) and working towards or have achieved chartership status via IFE.
