Main Duties

Operations

To be responsible for analysing and abstracting complex patient clinical records and applying clinical coding rules and conventions. Inputting clinical coded data onto the Patient Administration System (PAS) for inpatient, day case and outpatient attendances within the timescales agreed between the Trust and user organisations. To assist the Clinical Coding Manager in actively monitoring the completeness and timeliness of coding reporting within the strict monthly deadlines, raising any problems, including any backlogs, and their causes to the relevant divisional manager and any senior clinicians concerned. Clinical To be a team player and able to collaborate effectively with the Band 7 Endocrine Specialist Nurse already in post within the department and to be able to focus and develop further areas within the service that will be identified as key priorities. Autonomously, assess triage and diagnose endocrine conditions and review those with longstanding endocrine conditions, including complex patients as outpatients and inpatients, recommending or initiating appropriate treatment within agreed protocols and guidelines. Initiation and monitoring of testosterone replacement therapy in patients with hypogonadism and discharge to GP care and follow up after an initial 6-month period of stabilisation as per Pan-Mersey Area Prescribing Committee guidance. 5. Provision of education to patients with adrenal insufficiency to help manage their therapy during acute illness and prevent adrenal crisis. 6. Attend the transitional endocrine clinics held quarterly with the Adult and Paediatric Endocrinology Consultants to be introduced to all patients transitioning to the Aintree adult endocrine service and become their named worker as per NICE Guidelines and help support the teenagers/young adults manage their condition during the period of transition. Communicate using a wide range of complex, scientific and medical terminology to clinical colleagues including pathologists, surgeons, radiologists ensuring full comprehension and appropriate action. Play a lead role in the education, training and development of Biomedical Scientists and junior medical staff in the macroscopic description, dissection and sampling of specimens. Independent interpretation of macroscopic biopsies and surgical resections (both benign and malignant) from the relevant specimens within the agreed scope of practice. Provides independent expert opinion to clinical colleagues to enable management of patient care and provides expert opinion to medical colleagues to determine treatment of patients. The dissection knowledge and skills of this post are equivalent to a qualified Consultant Histopathologist and the Advanced Practitioner will be expected to be working to current Royal College of Pathologists best practice guidance. To process and be proficient in a range of diagnostic, analytical techniques used in the laboratory. To check the analytical work of other clinical scientists and non-registered analysts. To have a broad understanding of the pathology of haematological malignancies, and to show a keen interest in building this expertise up over a period of time. To undertake all laboratory procedures required for the processing of patient samples. To identify when techniques related to the processing of specimens are not working optimally. To apply critical analysis and judgement skills to ensure that the problem is resolved. To communicate where appropriate with more senior staff for advice. To take responsibility for their own work and to undertake an appropriate proportion of the total workload of the laboratory. To liaise with laboratory users, to understand their needs and to work with the senior laboratory to ensure that services are responsive to changing requirements. To assist in the documentation and investigation of service delivery issues notified by laboratory users and to ensure relevant departments are informed and appropriate action is taken. Validates results according to POCT Standard Operating Procedures. Take responsibility for finishing, checking, validating and authorizing colleagues work as necessary. Check validity and reliability of analytical processes, maintaining and monitoring satisfactory performance by internal quality control and external quality assessment to ensure accuracy and precision of POCT equipment. Manipulation of materials and objects such as microscopes and pipettes, for accurate and reliable determination of results. Monitors Quality control and reagent logs in ward areas and utilizes resources cost effectively. Assists with monitoring and managing POCT Data Management Systems. Check and monitor POCT consumables and storage facilities i.e. on ward/departmental areas and laboratory areas. Responsible for maintenance, troubleshooting and repair of Point of Care Testing ward based analytical systems, across Trusts and Community practices. Reporting major faults to Trust POCT Manager. Participate in flexible working when the service demands i.e to accommodate early morning or late evening staff training sessions. Provide support for analytical procedures performed outside of the Pathology Laboratory including training, monitoring, quality management and Health and Safety. Resources Ensure data integrity when entering demographics and results into the laboratory information system using specialized laboratory software. Liaise with IT support in resolving any computer system difficulties. Make suitable alternative arrangements in the case of equipment malfunction Monitor and store consumables, and reagents in appropriate conditions. Audit fridge/freezer temperature in POCT areas. Authorise the use of transport for exchanging faulty/checking performance of POCT Equipment, EQA samples distribution and delivering consumables to POCT services across sites.
