Research and Innovation Services (RIS) offers guidance, expert advice, and hands-on support for all aspects of research and research-related activities. This includes securing funding, collaborating with partners, undertaking knowledge exchange, demonstrating impact, commercialising outputs, ensuring good research practice, and supporting professional development.

This post will sit in the Contracting hub within the Research Operations Team. Research Operations is the largest team in the division and provides comprehensive support to academic and Professional Support Staff (PSS) colleagues throughout the lifecycle of a research project. The team comprises pre- and post-award services, contracting, and consultancy support. This includes tailored financial and contractual advice and management for all researchers at Durham, from planning, costing, and pricing the initial proposal to ensuring that contracts and agreements are negotiated effectively and efficiently and managing live awards.

Research Operations collaborates closely with the various teams within RIS and partners with Professional Support colleagues across the University. This collaboration helps facilitate research-related planning, reporting, and development, meeting the needs of both individual researchers and the wider institution.

The project, connecting Scotland and England to support the transfer of renewable electricity to key UK centres of demand, forms one of the largest which SSEN Transmission are involved with over the next decade, comprising High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) Convertor Stations, subsea cable installation and AC connections at either end of the system.

Due to the scale, complex nature, and accelerated requirements, we are implementing an innovative strategy for the delivery of this project and are building our team to ensure success.

We are recruiting for a Senior Project Manager to join the Converter Stations work package, focussed on the delivery of infrastructure at both ends of the subsea link at Peterhead and Lincolnshire. What do I need?

- An engineering, construction, or project management qualification/degree or equivalent experience.

- Thorough engineering or construction knowledge and understanding, including the associated environmental and safety legislation e.g. the CDM 2015 regulations.

- Commercially astute, with sound knowledge and experience of negotiating, administering, and managing FIDIC Contracts.

- Experience of the governance, reporting, and management requirements for project and/or programmes of work in a regulated environment, with prior delivery budget responsibilities of over £50m.

The Role and Department

Durham University is seeking to recruit an experienced Business Development Manager to work on the Arrow innovation support programme which is funded through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund (UKSPF). This post is fixed term (until 31st March 2025), with a start date from 1st September 2024 until 31st March 2025. Successful applicants will, ideally, be in post by 1st September 2024.

The Arrow programme provides a dynamic linkage between academia and businesses across the North East region; supporting enterprises via the delivery of a short-term innovation project (typically lasting 4-6 weeks). All Arrow projects focusing on developing an innovative project idea for the SME (across a process, product or service).

The Arrow programme is delivered by four partnering universities, Durham University, Newcastle University, Northumbria University and The University of Sunderland. All Universities have their own Arrow teams (with a total of 11 Senior Innovation Associates (IAs) employed across the 4 universities). All IAs have their own unique set of skills and expertise across a range of research and innovation areas. These include: Energy and Net Zero; Chemistry and Fundamental Sciences; Data Science; Ageing, Longevity and Caring; Business; Bioscience; Engineering; Advanced Materials; Sustainable Chemistry and Advanced Manufacturing.

Through the work of a network of Business Development Managers (BDM) located in the four institutions, the Arrow model aims to provide a catalyst function identifying and linking innovative businesses to the most appropriate specialist Innovation Associate (who works with academic departments to help them to undertake collaborative research and innovation activities, supported by programme funding).

The Business Development Manager will generate, develop and deliver a portfolio / pipeline of project activities with small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), including leading on industrial engagement and business development, marketing, communications and event activities for the Arrow project.

You will have a key role in helping to develop and support North East-based SMEs to develop and commercialise innovation in products and services, which will help the University to develop a pipeline of projects with regional SMEs and contribute to raising the innovation and economic potential of SMEs in the North region.

Lead responsibility for the Arrow Project at Durham University lies with the Research and Innovation Services (RIS) team. The post holder will report to the Head of the Economic Development Team and will be a member of the Commercialisation and Economic Development group, whose remit is to drive spinout creation, licensing activity and major economic development projects.

This project is part-funded by the Government's UK Shared Prosperity Fund through Durham County Council and the North of Tyne Combined Authority and is now administered by the North East Combined Authority.

We have fantastic opportunities for Project Managers to join the SSEN Transmission Capital Delivery team and lead projects in the customer connections team. These are of varying scale and complexity with typical project values ranging from £1m - £50m+.

The key responsibilities involved include: 

- Leading the SSE team and managing multiple external contractors, to ensure project excellence is achieved and we deliver on our promises.

- Managing the development and execution of capital projects, ensuring the safe delivery to programme, cost and the necessary quality.

- Ensuring the project adheres to our Safety Management Systems, best practices and the SSE Governance processes.

- Demonstrating alignment with the SSE Safety culture and core values.

To be considered for this role, we would love you to have:

- A strong project management, engineering or construction background and understanding of applicable health and safety regulations including CDM regulations.

- Excellent communication and leadership skills with a proven track record in the successful delivery of large projects.

- Contractual management experience (NEC3 experience is preferable), with the ability to forecast and control costs as well as develop and manage integrated project programmes.

- Due to the location of our projects, there is a need to have a driving licence and, for delivery focussed roles, a willingness to travel to site and be on site for 2-3 days a week during construction.

- Experience managing large electricity transmission projects is desirable. Experience in managing major projects from other industries, coupled with the desire and ability to learn quickly will be considered.

SSEN Transmission Offshore Delivery Team are currently recruiting for a Senior Project Delivery Manager to deliver various Accelerated Strategic Transmission Investment (ASTI) projects before 2030 regulatory deadlines to directly facilitate Scotland's ambitions to meet Net-Zero.

The projects are primarily subsea HVDC (High-Voltage Direct Current) links and due to the scale, complex nature, and accelerated requirements, we are implementing an innovative disaggregated delivery strategy. As the scale of our portfolio of projects is already large and is likely to grow in the coming years, this means there will likely be opportunities for career progression within the business. Due to the nature of the project packages, experience of civil engineering activities associated with underground cable installation is particularly desirable.

The key duties and responsibilities of this role will be:

- Accountable to the Business for the safety, health and wellbeing of all personnel, and for environmental aspects of those Transmission projects activities being managed, including compliance with our framework behaviour charters and the CDM regulations.

- Planning, Monitoring, and Controlling projects or packages in line with Project Execution Plans to ensure that these are executed to cost, schedule and quality.

- Accountable for all commercial aspects of delivery including contract negotiation, contract awards, and NEC contract management, ensuring that any disputes are escalated as appropriate for resolution. Accountable to the business for the budget and delivery of the project / package within this. Packages will be more than £100m in value.

- Ensuring the use of recognised project management processes, reporting, methods, techniques and tools, in particular the application of our Large Capital Projects (LCP) Governance Framework Manual.

- Provide leadership and demonstrate our core values. Lead large teams, ensuring these are highly competent, well-motivated, and organised to deliver consistent excellence. Take line management and mentoring responsibility for your direct reports to ensure they perform to their required duties and are given all available opportunity to develop.

What do I need?

To be considered for this role, wed love you to have:

- A proven track record of leading and safely delivering projects or programmes of work to cost, schedule and quality in the Transmission, Construction, Energy, or other regulated industry / the wider utilities sector.

- An engineering, construction, or project management qualification/degree or equivalent experience is required.

- Thorough engineering or construction knowledge and understanding, including the associated environmental and safety legislation e.g. the CDM 2015 regulations.

- Commercially astute, with sound knowledge and experience of negotiating, administering, and managing NEC Contracts with a recognised NEC qualification/registration is critical.

- Experience of the governance, reporting, and management requirements for project and/or programmes of work in a regulated environment, with prior delivery budget responsibilities of over £20m.

The successful candidate will be the leading member of the Social Sciences and Health Faculty NINE DTP, supported by three DTP Administrators, supporting the development of the ESRC-funded NINE DTP through leadership of the administration and regulatory framework of the DTP. The role will be line managed by the Faculty Manager of the Faculty of Social Sciences and Health at Durham University but will be accountable on a day-to-day basis to the academic leadership of the DTP. The Director of the DTP is based at Durham University, but the DTP Manager will also work closely with the academic lead at the six other partner institutions (Newcastle, Northumbria, Queen's Belfast, Sunderland, Teesside, Ulster).

The ("NINE DTP") is a collaborative enterprise between seven Universities across Northern Ireland and the North East of England: Durham, Newcastle, Teesside, Northumbria, Sunderland, Ulster, and Queens University Belfast. Funded by the Economic and Social Research Council, the DTP provide outstanding students with fantastic opportunities to conduct their Doctoral studies and develop core research skills in an exciting and creative environment. Annually the DTP award approximately 50-55 PhD studentships across the broad social sciences and at any one time, fund approximately 180 PhD students, providing support and training opportunities.

The NINE DTP Manager will play a lead role in the overall management and leadership of the DTP, ensuring delivery of high quality strategic and administrative support and guidance to the DTP Leadership Team, academic staff and students as well as external stakeholders, collaborators, sponsors etc. They will build effective relationships with key individuals to ensure that all service users receive the necessary advice and guidance to ensure compliance with regulatory, policy and contractual obligations and have the relevant information to plan and deliver activities that will deliver the DTP's strategic objectives.

The Nine DTP Manager will support strategy and policy development in relation to marketing, student recruitment and selection and studentship allocation, ensuring consistent procedures and parity of experience across the Partnership. They will also be responsible for monitoring performance against the DTP budget, advising on budget decisions and approving spend within limits set out in the partnership agreement.

The NINE DTP Manager will manage professional service staff within the DTP Hub, ensuring the provision of an efficient administrative service; supporting a wide range of teaching, learning and research activities; supporting all staff, students and external stakeholders as required; and ensuring the end-user experience is at the forefront of delivery.

The Role

The Learning and Teaching Manager will work towards enhancing the quality of existing programmes, contributing towards reviews and evaluation for the purposes of continual improvement. You will work with colleagues to inform planning and developments in line with strategy and mission statements, implementing new programmes and initiatives.

You will manage and develop a team of professional services staff, working together to provide a high-quality administrative environment, supporting a wide range of teaching, learning and assessment activities from the point of student enrolment through to graduation, ensuring the student experience is at the forefront of delivery.

You will project manage the academic year in collaboration with key academic post holders, including the Director of Education and Chair of the Board of Examiners; planning and delivering department learning and teaching projects and service areas. This will include project coordination and administration of areas including student induction, assessments, and managing student records. A key part will be undertaking the role of Secretary to the Board of Examiners, where you will manage the annual examinations process, coordinating a complex yearly program which commences in October with supporting academic colleagues to write, review and finalise papers, and finishes the following September on completion of the resit period.
