The Northern Centre for Cancer Care (NCCC) is looking to appoint a Radiotherapy Service Manager and Professional Lead Therapeutic Radiographer based in Newcastle.

We are looking for a well-motivated, experienced person to lead the delivery of radiotherapy services within our Cancer Centres in Newcastle and Carlisle (Northern Centre for Cancer Care North Cumbria).

This management position within NCCC/NCCCNC involves the full range of management accountabilities including day-to-day operational management of the radiotherapy department in both Newcastle and North Cumbria.

This post is responsible for teams across both departments incorporating approximately 100 members of staff, predominantly radiographers.

We have 9 Varian TrueBeams, 2 Tomotherapy units, 3 CT Scanners, 1 SXT unit and 1 HDR brachytherapy unit across our two sites, delivering treatment to approximately 6000 new patients per year employing a wide range of therapies including multi-met SRS, lungs SABR, HDR gynae brachytherapy, TBI/TSEI, gated lung therapy and cardiac SABR.

This is an exciting role for a motivated individual keen to drive improvement and join a very supportive and collaborative team.

The post holder takes day-to-day responsibility for delivery of the radiotherapy department’s key performance indicators as laid out in the NHS England’s service specification. This includes achieving the national cancer waiting time targets including the 62 and 31-day waits.

NCCC provides a highly specialized regional radiotherapy service to a population of circa 3.3million across the North East and North Cumbria with radiotherapy service provision for circa 2.0million.

This senior management position within NCCC/NCCC-NC involves the full range of management accountabilities for the delivery of radiotherapy services, including day-to-day operational management of the departments in both Newcastle and North Cumbria. A key objective for the post holder is to ensure equity of service delivery across the geographically spread treatment locations. This requires the post holder to ensure effective agreement exists between the departments in delivery of both strategic and operational objectives in order to deliver integrated care pathways.

The role provides radiotherapy professional leadership to the Radiotherapy Operational Delivery Network (ODN) responsible for providing radiotherapy system leadership and the delivery of NHS England’s vision and ambitions for the modernisation of radiotherapy services

Job overview

As a qualified Advanced Clinical Practitioner (ACP) on the East of England Ambulance Service Trust (EEAST) Advanced Practice Team bank you will provide exceptional clinical supervision and mentoring to our trainee ACPs through expert knowledge and wide-ranging experience of community-based urgent and unscheduled care. With a background of nursing, paramedicine or other relevant allied health profession you will have completed training to practice as an autonomous ACP and be able to work comfortably in the out of hospital environment at the higher margins of your professional capability.

You’ll work alongside our trainee ACPs in clinical operations, helping to develop and guide their clinical practice and supporting their educational journey. You’ll have experience in supervision and mentoring backed by a relevant qualification, and be comfortable providing constructive feedback and creating action plans where necessary.

The Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust define a nurse practitioner as a qualified nurse where the primary purpose of role is to perform a specific technological procedure/s e.g. endoscopy, ultrasound in a defined patient group and/or advanced patient assessment and clinical decision making in a broad patient group. To work towards the role of an independent nurse practitioner, contributing towards the delivery of a quality service matching clinical need to available resources within the focus of specialist nursing practice: To ensure that the patient is the central focus of a streamlined patient journey ensuring optimal quality of care. Will provide a prompt response to calls from colleagues, prioritisingimportance and clinical need. Supports the clinical team to manage a defined caseload, activity toinclude assessment, investigation, diagnosis and treatment within defined protocols and training. Provide immediate care management of patient including communication of plan to patients and significant others. Review and refer to appropriate person, e.g. AHP, resident medical staff, specialist registrar or critical care outreach team. Liaises with Patient Services Coordinator. Communicate within multidisciplinary team, ward/departmental staff and/or out of hours team. Contributes to specialist education and training to ward departmental staff, nursing and medical students. The post holder is expected to understand and apply the Patient Access Policy to their everyday activity, ensuring that patients are managed fairly and contributing to the ability of the Trust to maintain waiting time targets. The Waiting List Office administrative service will contribute towards a systematic approach to delivering the NHS Plan commitments for access to elective and day case surgery, specifically the drive to guarantee maximum waiting times and introduce Patient Choice through booking systems. The sensitivity around clinical and management priorities will require the post holder to work with and have the confidence of Consultants and Directorate Managers. Communication with patients will be proactive, inviting discussion and consultation around their preferences and availability. Patient focus and Customer Care will be a fundamental element of the service, delivered via written, telephone and face to face contact. Patient confidentiality must be observed at all times. The post holder is the line manager to the Waiting List Office Team.. It carries specific responsibilities for ensuring the systems and procedures used by the team are operating effectively and within the context of the Trusts policies and priorities. The post holder will be accountable for ensuring that patients at risk of breaching are managed under the supervision of the appropriate Directorate Manager for the relevant specialty.
