The Peer Specialist functions as an interdisciplinary team member, assisting physicians and other professional/non-professional personnel in a rehabilitation treatment program. Peer specialists perform a variety of therapeutic and supportive tasks that include assisting Veterans in articulating their goals for recovery and personal wellness, learning, and practicing new skills, helping them monitor their progress, assisting them in their treatment, modeling effective coping techniques and self-help strategies based on the peer specialist's own recovery experience, and supporting them in advocating for themselves to obtain effective services. • Assists the professional staff in the treatment and care of seriously disabled veterans to include amputees, spinal cord injury patients, and those with related disabilities requiring the use of orthotic, prosthetic, and footwear devices to take the place of, or assist a part or function of the body which is lost or impaired.
• Strives for continuous improvement of the use of equipment and funding resources in order to eliminate delays of delivery that reduce hospital days and to expedite rehabilitation of patients so that they may return to their daily lives.
• Sets up evaluation techniques in order to evaluate current and proposed programs, so as to determine the need for changes or the advantages of new technology or products.
• Takes responsibility for the overall operating budget of the laboratory including costs of materials, supplies and equipment.
• Proposes and provides justification for the necessary equipment to support the operation of the laboratory.
• Continually reviews the overall program as to needs and strives to reduce cost of materials by evaluation of techniques in fabrication and the actual needs of the finished products.
• Changes procedures on own initiative to improve service or produce a cost savings.
• Carries out the responsibilities of special clinics including Prosthetic and Orthotic Clinic, ensuring that program goals are met.
• Responsible for assisting in the prescription of all orthotic and prosthetic devices as a consultant for the Orthopedic, Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation, and Vascular services.
• Assists in the prescriptions of those same types of devices for Rheumatology, Ambulatory Care, Surgical and General Medicine Services.
• Assists in the evaluation of the final product as to the specifications of 1he prescriptions, fit and alignment and patient comfort.
• Fabricates, files, and adjusts preparatory prosthesis.
• Annotates patient's records with regard to services rendered of treatment provided to comply with Quality Management and JACHO Standard,; and guidelines.
• Reports any discrepancies directly to the Chief, Prosthetic & Sensory Aids Services, when noted for necessary investigation and follow up.
• Maintains and records information for reports required by Central Office and Regional Office.
• Orthotic and Prosthetic training instructor for work-study students.

• Perform CT/DRT imaging of the spine, head and neck studies utilizing specialized sequences to visualize the anatomy and pathology necessary for diagnosis.
• Perform imaging of the peripheral and visceral vessels through CT/DRT angiography of the abdominal systems and extremities.
• Adhere to hospital infection control and safety policies/techniques with emphasis on sterile technique; the storage of the sterile supplies; the disposal of body fluids and sharps; proper attire; hand washing practices; and continuing education.
• Prepare contrast materials that are used in CT, CTA, angiography, and other exams.
• Responsible for providing a teamwork environment with Radiologist, fellow technologist, and all other personnel that they are interacting with daily to facilitate pertinent information to ensure the success of the CT/DRT section.
• Work with schedules to assure timely accomplishment of assigned workload, making day-to-day adjustments in accordance with established priorities and additional assignments.
• Practice safety to reduce injury to patients, staff, and self.
• Responsible for always maintaining adequate supplies in section.
• Confer with radiologist to determine requirement of non-standard exams.
• Perform reconstructions of CT, and angiographic studies when requested or when part of a standard procedure.
• Maintain records and files of exams performed on patients.
• Continually review new development in the field of angiography and computerized tomography.
• Receive and interpret all radiology request. Input pertinent radiology information into computer systems.

These positions are located at the Orlando VA Medical center, 13800 Veterans Way, Orlando, FL 32827.The Acute Care Nursing Assistant (NA) responsibilities include all activities of daily living and general patient care duties to help the healthcare team restore the Veteran to the highest level of independence or remain comfortable toward the end of life. The NA will provide support for diagnostic procedures, nursing treatments, patient charting, and reinforcement of patient education. The performance of these tasks involves direct working relationships with Veterans and participation as a member of the nursing care team in direct service to Veterans.

Nursing Assistant (NA) Acute care is a member of the nursing care team and assist licensed nursing staff in the care of patients/residents receiving outpatient care, home, or community living care, or other patients/residents who are in acute, sub-acute or chronic states of illness. The distinguishing factor is that patient/resident assignments typically involve more complex nursing needs which can vary within a range of predictable to unpredictable requirements. NAs at this level also assume more of a peer education/mentorship role by assisting with the coordination of new NA orientation and overseeing/assessing their practical experience while in a clinical setting. They will have the ability to recognize and react to emergent patient/resident care situations and intervene while waiting for assistance. Completed work may require routine or detailed higher-level review depending on the complexity of the duties.

The duties for the Acute Care Nursing Assistant include but not limited to:

• Plans, organizes, and prioritizes assigned workload.
• Measures and records intake and output.
• Demonstrates ability to properly use equipment, materials, and supplies in simple diagnostic and treatment procedures such as glucometer test for blood glucose level, EKGs, bladder scanning, collection of urine samples, sputum, and stool. Delivers samples to lab and picks up blood products from the blood bank.
• Records basic data and patient responses, reporting significant changes to the RN.
• Assists by positioning and draping as well as emotionally supporting patients/residents during a variety of diagnostic and treatment procedures.
• Reports the condition of wounds and skin and any reaction to or results of treatment.
• Able to observe Veterans' physical or emotional status and refer deviations and/or problems to supervisor in a timely manner.
• Performs a wide variety of duties aimed at increasing the comfort and spirit of the Veteran.
• Assists in orienting patients/residents to the outpatient and/or inpatient hospital environment.
• Transports patients/residents after discharge or to activities as needed.
• Follows established SOPs and checklists in the use, set up, pre-cleaning, storage, reprocessing, and maintenance of all Reusable Medical Devices, as applicable.

The MST assembles highly complex instrument sets used in the operating room and clinical setting including, but not limited to: open heart, major orthopedic total joint, cardiovascular, craniotomy, thoracic and complex endoscopic instrumentation. Processes all complex endoscopic instrumentation to include those medical devices used in gastroenterology laboratory, bronchoscopy laboratory, urology and operating room. Reviews manufacturer guidelines to ensure the correct methods and parameters are followed when cleaning, decontaminating and sterilizing RME. Troubleshoots and analyzes mechanical failures and makes necessary adjustments to complex decontamination and sterilization equipment, as well as interprets alarm conditions which may occur while operating the equipment. Informs management and healthcare staff when cleaning and processing standard operating procedures (SOPs) or instruction for use have been changed or updated to assure the changes have been validated to meet all guidelines. Some of the duties include, but are not limited to;

• Receives contaminated critical and semi-critical RME in decontamination area.
• Disassembles RME and determines the correct cleaning method, such as but not limited to ultrasonic cleaners, mechanical washers, cart washers and chemical cleaning/decontamination agents as determined by manufactures instructions.
• Inspects, prepares, assembles and determines the correct method and packaging for sterilization such as but not limited to steam, plasma, hydrogen peroxide and high-level disinfection.
• Removes soil, blood, tissue fragments, body fluids and other contaminants by wiping, soaking, rinsing and scrubbing using the proper Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) to avoid any cross contamination.
• Inspects packages for indications of proper sterilization.
• Assembles basic and specialty instrument sets and trays used throughout the medical center including those used in the operating room.
• Performs segments of work pertaining to the decontamination, sterilization and inspection of reusable medical equipment (RME).
• Performs and documents daily operational checks and records for all sterilization equipment.
• Other duties as assigned.
