This is an exciting opportunity to become part of the ‘Our Town Hall’ team, delivering a once-in-a-lifetime project for the city of Manchester. Work has been underway to restore and refurbish the Grade 1-listed Town Hall since 2017. You will play an important part in the final phase of the project, ensuring the Town Hall collections are ready for the reopening of the building.
The Collections Management Officer is responsible for the documentation and management of the unique Town Hall collection, which includes furniture, sculpture, paintings and social history material. You will create and maintain records on the collections management system and will be responsible for object photography. You will work closely with the Collections Officer to improve the packing and storage of the collection in preparation for its return to the Town Hall, ensuring all items are marked and labelled. You will also help supervise volunteers and contractors, as required.

You will have a problem-solving approach to your work and will be confident working both independently and as part of a team.
The role of Collections Management Officer requires good written and oral communication skills, and you will be able to adapt your style to suit different audiences. You will be confident when communicating with a variety of stakeholders, volunteers and when responding to public enquiries about the collection.
You will have knowledge of the principles of collections management to a museum standard, and you will have experience of using a collections management database. You will be experienced in the safe handling and movement of collections and will have a good understanding of collections care standards.
In accordance with Home Office guidance, successful candidates must evidence their right to work in the UK before commencement of employment. This is not a role we consider to be eligible for sponsorship under the Skilled Worker route based on Manchester City Council policy. Candidates are therefore encouraged to consider their own right to work options without the requirement for Manchester City Council sponsorship.
