The post holder will work as part of the Virology BMS team in the Serology and Molecular sections of the department. The successful candidate will be trained to participate in the weekly bench duties expected of a BMS, as well as wider involvement in the department including, but not limited to, quality, health and safety and UKAS preparation. Once trained there may be possibility of weekend working to support the service as needed.
The successful candidate must have HCPC registration and an understanding of the roles and responsibilities of a BMS. This is an opportunity to develop practical experience in a variety of diagnostic techniques and equipment, from manual confirmation tests to high throughput serology and molecular automation. The successful candidate will have a positive approach to this development opportunity.
Knowledge of the Virology service would be desirable and an awareness of service development. If you believe that you have the knowledge, skills and approach that fits with our Virology department then we want to hear from you.
This post is a fixed term contract for 6 months

To attend relevant trainee tutorials and talks as directed by the Training Officer.
To take responsibility for the continuous update and maintenance of personal training records or portfolio under the guidance of the Training Officer.
To learn and to become competent in the performance and interpretation of analytical procedures and laboratory results under the direction of an appropriately qualified member of staff.
To participate in Continual Professional Development meeting HPC professional requirements.
Technical and Scientific
To undertake manual, semi-automated and fully-automated laboratory investigations, under appropriate supervision, ensuring Standard Operating Procedures are adhered to at all times.
To undertake preventative maintenance on laboratory instruments under the supervision of a Biomedical Scientist.
To develop the skills required to prepare specialist reagents required for immunological investigations.
To undertake technical validation of results from laboratory investigations under the direct supervision of a Biomedical Scientist.
To learn how to interpret diagnostic laboratory results and to take appropriate actions where necessary, under the direction of senior staff. To include procedures for:
· authorisation of results
· ordering relevant follow-up laboratory procedures
· adding technically and clinically relevant comments
· referring results for a second opinion
· informing the requestor of clinically significant results
To report to the section supervisor any instance or event which may compromise service delivery.
To undertake method evaluations under the supervision of senior staff.
To participate in research and development as directed by senior staff.
To effectively liaise and communicate with all members of staff and to actively participate in laboratory meetings.
To deal helpfully, competently and confidentially with patients, staff and laboratory visitors; to deal with all enquiries and to orally transmit results as laid down in SOP.
Laboratory Informatics
To comply with local and national policies for the safe, secure and confidential processing, and storage of patient and other laboratory information.
To use the Laboratory Information System according to the authorised protocols.
To maintain the integrity and accuracy of the laboratory databases.
