Choice Hotels, one of the world’s largest lodging franchisors, has an exciting new opportunity as our Manager, Site Reliability Engineering in the Data Center Operations department. The Manager, Site Reliability Engineering is a leader with strong cloud infrastructure and operations experience with a focus in Amazon Web Services (AWS). This position combines leadership skills and experience, technical expertise, and strategic thinking to drive continuous improvement in observability and reliability for the enterprise. This position is responsible for around the clock monitoring of Choice Hotels environments, including the AWS cloud, using state of the art tools and applications with a focus on MTTA and MTTR and reliability of the company’s systems.
The Manager, Site Reliability Engineer is responsible for leading a team of system analysts and an engineer with the continued development of software applications and associated tools to increase the level of automation and monitoring/alerting of the enterprise and its systems.
Your Responsibilities
Plans and manages the design, implementation, and administration of the critical monitoring and alerting applications and systems for the company’s enterprise business systems.
Designs and executes the observability strategy, collaborating closely with cross-functional teams to enhance system stability.
Establishes continuous improvement of our processes, and monitoring capabilities for the enterprise.
Maintains current knowledge of AWS services and DevOps tools and practices.
Manages the operational backlog and plans and leads the execution of operational and continuous improvement projects including software upgrades, patching, infrastructure maintenance, and disaster recovery.
Ensures applications and services are highly available, reliable, and performant through world-class monitoring, alerting, and self-healing capabilities by applying DevOps best practices.
Promotes and ensures compliance with PCI and SOX requirements and participates in audit processes.
Ensures all technical procedures (Installation, Configuration, Run Books and Processes) are documented and updated and are contributing to the maintenance of operational standards.
Leads production support efforts to minimize downtime and drives root cause analysis and remediation efforts.
Directs and manages the day-to-day operations of the team.
Leads and holds staff accountable for achievement of department goals.
Sets reasonable stretch performance goals, provides constructive, balanced, regular performance feedback, and collaborates with associates to help build and support their individual career development plans.
Drives associate engagement and recognize and rewards performance excellence.
Manages the hiring process, conducts interviews, and ensures the successful onboarding of new associates.
Your Experience, Skills & Competencies
Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science or related technical field from a four-year college or university or equivalent education and/or work experience.
Minimum 5 years of progressive experience in IT infrastructure, software development, information systems, or equivalent technical fields including previous experience in the development and support of highly transactional, mission critical systems, inclusive of direct experience leading operational, observability or site reliability teams
Minimum 4 years of enterprise public cloud experience, with at least 3 years of AWS experience monitoring and alerting.
Strong understanding of monitoring and alerting tools (e.g., OTEL, Prometheus, Grafana).
Strong understanding and knowledge of major incident management processes.
Strong understanding of SRE principles, ITIL practices, and modern infrastructure technologies.
Strong understanding of cloud computing platforms with a focus on AWS and knowledge of containerization technologies (e.g., Docker, Kubernetes)
Strong analytical and technical troubleshooting skills.
Strong problem-solving and analytical abilities, with a keen eye for detail and a passion for driving operational efficiency. Successfully balances long-term strategy and short-term project goals.
Exceptional communication skills and ability to present to executive-level leadership.
Effective people skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams and communicate technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders.
Excellent critical thinking skills with the ability to analyze complex technical issues and provide effective solutions.
Your Team
This is a leadership role that will report to the Director of Data Center Operations. You will lead a team of 5-8 and collaborate with cross functional departments on a regular basis.
Your Work Location
As our Manager, Site Reliability Engineering, you will be based in our beautiful, state-of-the-art technology hub in Scottsdale, AZ. In October 2021, Choice opened a newly constructed world class technology center.
Right now, our associates in Scottsdale, AZ are working in a hybrid environment, up to 4 days per week in the office and virtual from your home office the remaining days.
