Press Content Development

• Writes, publishes, reviews, and measures the success of press releases on AmeriCorps.gov (Drupal), advisories, social media, and other relevant materials, aligning plans with agency goals and objectives as directed by the Press Secretary.
• Writes briefing memos for senior leaders for upcoming interviews. Contributes to the strategic development and production of media materials.
• Provides CEO and senior leadership with regular updates on press activity, press production, crisis response, and CEO social media.
• Organizes the press editorial calendar.
• Consults with managers and specialists in the Office of Communications and Marketing to provide media expertise, strategic direction and approaches, and assistance with other mission-related tasks.
• Stays abreast of the latest trends for effective media relations and communication to targeted audiences, focusing on strategies to increase visibility for the work supported by AmeriCorps.

• Manages day-to-day press and media outreach to cultivate and sustain partnerships, including managing the press inbox, responding to inquiries, and scheduling and staffing leaders for interviews.
• Coordinates media and public affairs requests, including interviews and filming inquiries.
• Monitors and reviews all media coverage and public engagement events which includes occasional weekend and evening support for senior leadership when there are interviews, media events or press conferences.
• Cultivates relationships with media representatives, bookers, and outlets, proactively seeking out new media partnership opportunities.
• Strategically pitches agency or program-specific stories to TV, radio, print news outlets and journalists that result in media coverage. Implements policies and procedures outlined by the Press Secretary for media relations activities, including maintaining current media contact lists in agency CRM and media monitoring tool (Meltwater).
• Supports the Press Secretary in managing the public face of AmeriCorps, ensuring that the agency brand is represented consistently and correctly across all media outlets.
• Serves as on-the-record spokesperson for the agency in the absence of the Press Secretary. Performs other duties as assigned.

Press Content Development

• Interviews stakeholders to gain insight and background for story development for the purpose of drafting press releases, advisories, or story pitches to garner press coverage.
• Coordinates and shares this information with others to facilitate accomplishment of these tasks. Distill complex ideas, data, and research such as, but not limited to, research gathered by our data team or taken from AmeriCorps grantees in several programs into compelling content.
• Content may include language for the website or for media materials like press releases or advisories. This content is typically posted on the AmeriCorps website or on social media platforms like LinkedIn.
• Drafts and verifies long and short-form content in a fast-paced environment, including national service and volunteerism think pieces, Op-Eds, blog posts, recruitment collateral, web content, emails, and social media.
• Writes, proofs, and edits content to ensure consistency, accuracy, and alignment with brand platform, AP Style, and Agency style guide.
• Writes talking points, FAQs, and other background communications for Agency principals in support of media and external outreach.
• Serves as an editor for Agency departments for external communications, emails, blogs, social media, and other content as requested.
• Tracks and updates editorial calendar.

• Identifies and tracks story ideas by program and key demographic attributes for potential future use.
• Monitors and reviews media coverage and public engagement events to amplify AmeriCorps in the news.

• Assists in preparing briefing memos for senior leader interviews.
• Adeptly manages a busy workload and competing deadlines.
• Provides excellent customer service and responsiveness to colleagues across the agency to receive information to help inform press releases.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

This position serves as liaison between AmeriCorps and state and local elected officials as well as related associations including the National Governors Association, African American Mayors Association, and National League of Cities, among others. The employee designs and implements an innovative nation-wide strategy to promote and advance the mission of AmeriCorps and its programs with elected officials at the state and local level through outreach, networking, and analysis of information from a variety of sources.

• Serves as primary liaison between AmeriCorps and state and local elected officials, their staff, and related associations. Establishes and maintains relationships with these offices and organizations while promoting greater understanding of the agency, programs, and resources. Provides recommendations on strategic opportunities and facilitates program site visits, engagement, and other special events for agency leadership and elected officials. Represents the department at events, as appropriate.
• Disseminates information to state and local elected officials about agency grants and programs in their area and proactively follow up with offices. Periodically sends touch points sharing relevant information that aligns with their priority issue areas. Responds to inquiries and requests for information with thorough, accurate information in a timely manner.
• Advises department, regional offices, and agency leadership on strategic opportunities to engage state and local elected officials on legislative, policy, or special initiatives that are in alignment with the agency's policy goals and priorities. Analyzes legislative proposals and bills introduced at the state level to determine impact on agency policies, programs, and procedures. Demonstrates understanding and familiarity with agency grantmaking, award making, and deployment calendar. Makes recommendations on which state/local elected offices to prioritize by synthesizing information from a variety of sources through research and drawing connections.
• Prepares briefing materials, memos, talking points, and other written communication materials for department and agency leadership and state/local elected officials to support engagement opportunities. Clearly articulates agency policies and priorities to state/local elected officials and staff. Drafts external documents such as resolutions, updates to policy platforms, and proclamations to support elected official and association amplification of AmeriCorps and national service. Briefs elected officials and their staff in meetings on agency policies and priorities.
