The Engineer performs engineering design review and analysis assignments normally involving a major project or several smaller, less complex projects. These projects, by nature of their complexity and difficulty, require the fully competent application of conventional knowledge in a particular field of engineering or science. Through broader and more technically challenging work assignments, the incumbent will develop a thorough understanding of policies, methods, and procedures.

What You Will Do:

• Under the supervision of an experienced engineer or engineering manager, performs detailed engineering review of plans as assigned for compliance with applicable Rules, Regulations, and contract commitments.
• Performs work that involves conventional engineering practices but may include moderately complex problems such as the resolution of conflicting design requirements, material standards or coordination of activities among other disciplines.
• Drafts technically accurate and timely reports, and responses to client letters, faxes, and other forms of communication for review by an experienced engineer or engineering manager.
• Prepares accurate and timely weekly reports and billing on all work performed.
• Communicates the status of the current workload to all appropriate members of the team to ensure the needs of the clients will be met.
• May propose technical advice to field operations and other technical offices.
• May propose new approaches to problems encountered and make recommendations for changes in methods, procedures, or designs.
• May work directly with clients to identify and resolve problems in technical expertise.
• Works as a team member within the group. May work autonomously, once trained, with minimal supervision.
• Implements and maintains ABS Quality System requirements relative to responsibilities after undergoing ABS Quality System training.

What You Will Need:

Education and Experience

• B.S. degree in Civil, Structural Engineering, Naval Architecture, Ocean Engineering, or other related disciplines; an M.S. may be preferred.
• The following are new hire requirements for university graduates and experienced engineers from the industry (either I or II):

Graduate from University:

A. For those with seven (7) years or fewer Hull backgrounds or experience

• B.S. degree in Civil, Structural Engineering, Naval Architecture, Ocean Engineering, or other related disciplines; an M.S. may be preferred.
• Demonstrated computer literacy in engineering software.
• Exposed to the Finite Element Method (coursework or supervised research).

B. For those with seven (7) years or fewer Machinery backgrounds or experience

• B.S. degree in Marine, Mechanical, or Electrical Engineering or other related disciplines.

Experienced Engineer from Industry A or B:

A. Hull:

• Demonstrated computer literacy in engineering software.
• Exposed to Finite Element Method (coursework or supervised research).
• Seven (7) years or more of related engineering experience in a shipyard, design/consulting office, shipping/oil company, or a classification society or
• Professional or chartered engineer license and four (4) years or more of related engineering experience in a shipyard, design/consulting office, shipping/oil company, or classification society.

B. Machinery:

• Seven (7) years or more of related engineering experience in a shipyard, design/consulting office, shipping/oil company, or a classification society or
• Seagoing engineering license or professional/chartered engineer license and four (4) years or more of related engineering experience in a shipyard, design/consulting office, shipping/oil company, or classification society.

• Knowledge of related technical disciplines required.
• The ability to identify, analyze and propose solutions to problems (i.e., the competence to demonstrate complex problem-solving skills).

Job Capsule

In accordance with established policies, procedures and standards, is responsible for the activities related to an assigned organizational element, program, project or task. Will normally plan, conduct and supervise engineering design reviews and analysis assignments involving a major project or several smaller or less complex projects. Project work and assignments may be broad in nature requiring ingenuity and cross functional coordination.

Job Duties/Roles

1. Provides day-to-day leadership of Engineering staff assigned. Assigns projects to Engineers and monitors the progress of all assigned projects. Ensures the delivery of high quality service and maintenance of good customer relations.

2. Devises new approaches to problems encountered and makes recommendations for changes in methods, procedures or design where necessary.

3. Monitors the technical quality, content, consistency, continuity and timeliness of action of all assigned projects.

4. Applies intensive and diversified knowledge of engineering principles and practices in broad areas of technical responsibility. Performs engineering reviews and analyses when necessary. Reviews other engineers' work and provides appropriate guidance and training when necessary.

5. Participates in the development and changes of Rules. Advises assigned staff in matters related to the application of Rules and Regulations.

6. Prepares written response to clients in accordance with established procedures.

7. Maintains liaison with other engineering specialists internally and externally.

8. Monitors the performance, development potential and training needs of engineers assigned. Keeps management informed of manpower needs.

9. Develops or assists in the development of qualification statements, proposals, bids and other presentation materials.

10. Implements and maintains the ABS Health, Safety, Quality & Environmental Management Systems within assigned area of responsibility.

11. Prepares accurate billing to clients.

Job Duties/Roles

• Provide risk and reliability engineering activities for marine and offshore projects utilizing both qualitative and quantitative reliability analysis methods such as HAZID, HAZOP, Fault tree analysis, Quantitative Risk Assessment, fire/explosion/dispersion consequence simulations, etc.
• Review engineering technical specifications and drawings in the area of process and control engineering.
• Prepare technical reports to identify units posing an excessive risk to Safety, Assets, and the Environment.
• Advise and confer with engineers in design review meetings and technical workshops to give risk and reliability findings and recommendations.
• Active in assisting the team with business development opportunities and technical proposal drafting.
• Perform any duties assigned by the supervisor.

More than 5 years related experience preferred.

Required/Preferred Education Requirements

A bachelor’s degree or higher degree in chemical engineering and/or Bachelor’s/master's in health, Safety and Environment related courses

Required/Preferred Professional Requirements

Consequence software experience preferred – E.g. PHAST, FLACS, KFX, InFlux, Fluent

Experience with offshore Formal Safety Assessments preferred.
