Engineering Technologist I/II
Depending upon the desired qualifications of the successful applicant, the hiring manager may elect to fill this position at a higher level within the job hierarchy.
This position is for an Engineering Technologist on the Nuclear Fleet Fire Protection Engineering team. The team provides engineering support and oversight of the Nuclear Stations’ Fire Protection Programs. This is the entry level of the Engineering Technologist classification hierarchy. Employees at this entry level solve problems in engineering areas of specialization with close supervision. Incumbents are expected to develop skills, and the ability to work with greater independence. They have knowledge of fundamental concepts and procedures. This position can be hired as either an Engineering Technologist I or Engineering Technologist II depending on experience.
Responsibilities for this position include but are not limited to the following:
- Provides technical expertise and guidance in the identification, analysis, and resolution of routine problems in area of risk identification, analysis, mitigation, and management.
- Provide NFPA code and program expertise. Ensure site meets program compliance with codes, standards, fleet/site procedures and regulations.
- Develop and/or provide technical support in the development of surveillance testing, fire protection pre-plans, and impairment monitoring and reporting processes.
- Provide field support to maintenance, operations, and site services for Fire Protection related issues.
- Review engineering changes for Fire Protection impact.
- Prepare and support NRC/INPO/NEIL inspections.
- Assists in the accomplishment of business goals and objectives through effective planning, organizing, estimating, scheduling, and monitoring of work activities under the guidance of higher-level employees.
- Applies beginner level knowledge in preparing thorough and accurate technical reports, correspondence, documentation, calculations, and sketches associated with the resolution of routine technical problems.
- Possesses knowledge of fundamental concepts, practices, and procedures.
- Develops positive working relationships to effectively coordinate work activities. Demonstrates effective oral and written communication skills. Maintains accurate records and files.
- Supports the company's goals and represents the company positively and professionally.
Engineering Technologist I
Basic/Required Qualifications
- Associate Degree in Engineering Technology (or equivalent) or High School Diploma/ GED and 4+ years equivalent industry experience without a degree
Engineering Technologist II
Basic/Required Qualifications
- Either a graduate from a college or university with Bachelor of Science in Engineering Technology (or equivalent), or 2+ years of experience and Associate Degree in Engineering Technology (or equivalent), or 6+ years equivalent experience without a degree
Desired Qualifications
- Good written and oral communication skills.
- Experience in the utility industry.
- Understanding of basic principles of project management.
- Understanding of basic Fire Protection engineering theories and principles.
- Bachelor of Science in Engineering Technology (Fire Protection).
Specific Requirements
Specific Requirements
- Must qualify and meet requirements for nuclear site Unescorted Access/Security clearance.
- This position may be required to have Emergency Response Organization (ERO) responsibilities which could include callouts with a defined response time to the site and an on-call duty rotation requiring the employee to be Fit for Duty.
- Typical Office environment with flexibility to support plant operations. Must be able to work in an industrial environment safely.
- Additional hours expected as workload/business need requires, to include but not limited to occasional work during nights and weekends or extended workdays to support nuclear regulatory compliance, unit outages, emergent equipment issues callouts, etc.
- Required to wear personal protective equipment (hardhat, safety glasses, fall protection, etc.) as needed.
Working Conditions
- Office and plant environment requires walking, light lifting, infrequent climbing and occasional exposure to temperature, noise, and radiation.
- Highly procedural and process-oriented structure, due to strict regulatory requirements.
- On-call duty responsibilities will apply.
- Ability to perform field walk-downs in an operating plant.
- Some travel off the Duke Energy system may be involved.
- Occasional overnight travel.
