We are now recruiting for Explainers to join our Learning Team based at the National Railway Museum in York. There are both full-time (36 hours per week) and part-time (18 hours per week) roles available and shifts will be on a 4-week rolling rota which includes regular weekend working.

About the role

As an Explainer you will provide live interpretation in the museum galleries for all our visitors. You will deliver a wide-ranging and creative programme of activities and events for diverse audiences including schools, families, adults and community groups. You will reveal the wonder of science by telling authentic stories about our collection and facilitating and supporting the learning of children and adults.

Your role is to engage with visitors and help them learn from our exhibits and collection. You will support with and deliver all learning activities inside the Wonderlab Gallery, an interactive space that encourages and inspires our visitors to investigate with science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM).

We provide opportunities for you to develop your skills through on-the-job training programmes in order to support you in delivering high quality learning experiences that are memorable and engaging for our large and diverse audiences.

About you

First of all, you don't need to be a science expert or have any particular qualifications in STEM. You will also be able to deliver presentations, performances or demonstrations.

Crucially, you will have experience of working with and communicating to a broad range of people, especially children and you will have the confidence to learn to perform or present to an audience and the ability to seek and learn from feedback.

About the role
This is great opportunity if you are keen to start a career in Project Management, particularly within Construction; Facilities Management or Buildings Management.

You will ensure that Capital projects are undertaken in line with Project Management best practice, through engagement of relevant stakeholders and in accordance with relevant legislation and guidance.

You'll co-ordinate effective financial and administration management of projects through their full life cycle and will oversee all contractor and documentation including tenders, surveys, reports, and statutory records.

The team are keen to support and develop you within this position - You are not required to have any prior qualifications or experience of project frameworks. Training will be provided to enable your continuous development, including the opportunity to gain a Project Management Qualification.

We can offer a hybrid working pattern, however there will still be a regular presence required at our York museum, with occasional travel to other northern sites.

This post will involve close liaison with mental health, social care and primary services, as well as with relevant Research and Development departments. The post holder will be based within the CAMHS Research Team (COMIC) based within the specialist services directorate in York but may be expected to work across Leeds and York if required. Based within a diverse and experienced research team, the research fellow will be responsible for supporting and coordinating research into child/adolescent and possibly adult mental health. The post holder will be from a mental health research applicable background (e.g. psychology, nursing, health services research, etc.) and will have experience of the mental health research setting, trial coordination, applying for grants and recruiting participants into research, including informed consent. The primary aim of this post is to support the expansion of research activity within the trust. This will predominantly involve coordinating the pilot 18-25 service for National Deaf CAMHS and other studies in the team that may need support. The post holder will contribute to the development of the service to clinical trial participants and ensure cost effective use of resources. They will lead and manage this and other projects using effective change management strategies linking to local and national research, work autonomously and manage their own workload. The post holder will at all times maintain and ensure others maintain high standards of practice in accordance with the Research Governance Framework for Health and Social Care, the appropriate quality standards for each trial (e.g. International Conference on Harmonisation of Good Clinical Practice in Clinical Trials (ICH-GCP)) and appropriate standards of probitylaid down by their professional body (e.g. nursing and midwifery code of contact). This work will involve collaboration with members of the National Health Service, the wider research community including Universities, the general public and research networks. Additionally, the research fellow will be expected to identify and recruit members of the public, mental health service users and carers eligible to take part in a range of projects and provide information and support, ensuring that they and junior members of the team are working according to ICH GCP and research governance standards for clinical trials. Archive and Library Assistant (Copying)

At the National Railway Museum in York, the library and archive, known as Search Engine, is the home of a wealth of material connected with railways and transport industries, from the eighteenth century to the present day. Search Engine provides access to the public, researchers, curators and other internal audiences to a range of collections, as well as offering a copying service.

We are now recruiting for an Archive and Library Assistant (Copying) based on-site at the National Railway Museum in York. This is a full-time, permanent role, working 35 hours per week.

About the role

As Archive and Library Assistant (Copying) you will be based in Search Engine to administer the copy service for both public and internal requests. At Search Engine you will deliver the service, working with colleagues within Collections Services, Photo Studio and Picture Library to retrieve collections items and images for scanning, capturing collections information that can be used in the digitisation process.

You will also process payments onto our finance system and maintain accurate records so that orders can be tracked and income monitored. Additionally, you will be supporting Search Engine's volunteer research team, Inreach, by administering orders and payments.

About you

Joining us you will have good customer service experience and the ability to communicate effectively with others. You will be able to work calmly and manage and prioritise tasks effectively in time-sensitive situations, using your good attention to detail to follow processes accurately.

Crucially you will have good computer skills, including experience of using databases to find information and the knowledge or a willingness to learn of how to input data into finance systems.

Conservation and Collections Care Manager

The Conservation and Collections Care team (C&CC) support all conservation activity across the collection and are responsible for establishing and maintaining conservation and collection care standards.

We are now recruiting for a Conservation and Collections Care Manager based at the National Railway Museum in York with hybrid working available. This is a full-time, permanent role working 35 hours per week.

About the role

As the Conservation and Collections Care Manager you will be responsible for leading and managing the C&CC team in York and Shildon, including project staff and volunteers. You will develop and train staff to ensure that they can deliver conservation programmes to a high standard.

You will be planning, monitoring and delivering conservation activity at the National Railway Museum and Locomotion, including interventive and preventive programmes, to ensure museum plans and statutory requirements are met within time and budget. Ensuring the appropriate quality of all CCC work is maintained. You will be responsible for the collections hazards management on site and as such will be the site Collections Asbestos Manager and Radiation Protection supervisor.

You will communicate effectively with museum stakeholders, securing and influencing their support and contributions; identifying and resolving problems; ensuring the wider museum and CCC team is kept informed and consulted as appropriate.

About you

Joining us you will have significant experience in conservation and collections care. You will be an effective project and people manager with the ability to direct, supervise, influence, motivate and coach interdisciplinary teams including volunteers, interns and other professionals.

Crucially, you will be able to use your communication skills to build effective relationships with a wide range of stakeholders. You will have experience of reviewing processes and workflows to find efficiencies coupled with the ability to work well in a team and generate ideas and drive workstreams forward.

You will assist in the planning, organisation and successful delivery of the volunteer programme across the Railway Museum in York, and Locomotion in Shildon, ensuring that every volunteer has a fantastic experience with us. You will help to complete recruitment administration and will support enrichment through induction, training and events, and will process vital records including keeping volunteer records up to date and processing volunteer expense claims. What we are seeking:

The Research Support Specialist will support the research functions of the Climate Jobs Institute (CJI) program and contribute to and author independent research projects and collaborate with CJI faculty, staff, and ILR students on ongoing applied and academic research projects. Research work may involve conducting fieldwork related to research projects and collecting and analyzing information from archives, libraries, and other data and information centers. The individual will write and edit research reports, analyze current research and public policy, compile information and statistics, and generate literature reviews of ongoing research and education projects.

The position will provide legal research and analysis to support policy development and recommendations at the local, state, and national levels. This will involve using tools such as Lexis, Westlaw, and PowerSuite to understand complex regulatory environments in the fields of labor, energy, administrative, constitutional, contract, and employment law, and translate that research into presentations, policy reports, and internal memoranda.

The Research Support Specialist will also provide research assistance and perform research work for educational programs, including preparing presentations and crafting materials for CJI trainings. The individual will present at, participate in, and attend conferences, workshops, and public events related to research topics. The Research Support Specialist will work with undergraduate student fellows at the CJI. The individual will also edit grant and funding proposals, and write media articles for the CJI and ILR communications related to research topics.

Cornell Agricultural Experiment Station – Field Assistant II, Willsboro, NY

The Cornell Agricultural Experiment Station (Cornell AES) is dedicated to sustainable "science for life," in its two core, separate but related, functions -- the operation of world-class research facilities throughout the state and the generation and application of research-based knowledge through the administration of federal formula grants.

The Willsboro Research Farm encompasses 352 acres, with an additional 40 acres of research fields at the Miner Institute in Chazy, NY. Research projects are diverse and include breeding, horticulture and crop and soil science research on small grains, corn, biofuel grasses, grapes, high tunnel production and much more. The farm is managed by CUAES as a site for interdisciplinary applied research. Cooperatively support agricultural research, teaching and extension projects in accordance with the Land Grant Mission.

What You Will Do

As the Field Assistant II you will participate in most phases of research and production to support 10+ faculty research programs. Key Responsibilities will include:

• Safely and effectively operate over 40 specialized pieces of farm equipment, under the strict technical parameters of small-plot research.

• Primary and secondary tillage, seeding, cultivation, mowing, harvesting and collection of water, soil and crop tissue research samples, pesticide applications, facility care, maintenance, and special projects as assigned.

• Work cooperatively to inspect, maintain and repair a diverse fleet of research farm equipment, including tractors, mowers, seeders, cultivators, combines, and haying equipment.

• Assist in the maintenance of the farm’s high tunnel and office/barn facilities.

• Assist with the installation, monitoring and troubleshooting of irrigation systems.

• Record measurements of field environmental conditions as requested.

• Properly prepare land and provide basic documentation of field activities.

• Respond to assigned service requests in a timely manner with minimal direct supervision.

• Some requests will require immediate action and flexibility.

• Provide occasional guidance for temporary summer employee(s).

Participate in annual preparations for field days and other agricultural outreach events. Work collaboratively to progress a culture of sustainability. Effectively communicate with all stakeholders.

What We Need from You

You will be most successful in this role if you have a High School Diploma with 2 years’ experience in commercial or research farming or equivalent combination of education and experience. Other requirements include:

• Experience in and/or demonstrated commitment to supporting diversity, equity, access, inclusion, and wellbeing.

• Must be able to obtain and maintain a NYS Commercial Pesticide Applicator’s license. 

• Must be able to wear proper protective equipment to avoid exposure to toxic chemicals.

• Capable of operating farm tractors, trucks, and numerous other pieces of farm equipment including but not limited to: disks, cultivators, mowers, spraying equipment, chainsaws, air tools, backhoe, front end loader, research plot combines, and most common hand-held shop and farm tools.

• Must possess skills and aptitude in making mechanical repairs.

• Experience with irrigation equipment.

• Must possess and maintain a valid NYS driver’s license.

• Must possess basic computer skills for the purposes of data entry, record keeping, and informational searches.

• Demonstrate strong organizational skills with attention to detail.

• Able to lift 50+ lbs.

• Must be safety oriented; know, understand, adhere and train others to conform to all safety requirements and regulations.
